After some trouble with a virus I reset my computer to a restore point from yesterday using the window utility. Since then I have been unable to log in. After entering my password and hitting enter the client will hang and be unresponsive for about a minute, then it will take me to the character selection screen. After selecting a character it will go to the login loading bar blackscreen for spawning the char and will hang at about 80% and never make any progress.

I ran the eve repair EXE and it says the game is working correctly. Any ideas?

I suggest clearing out your cache data and if that doesn't work, re-install the game.

However, there is a patch being deployed now, this may fix the problem for you.

no luck, patch didnt solve anything. Tried repair exe after patch again, nothing. Any other ideas other than a straight reinstall?

Do you happen to have Alienware computer, or any Alienware device attached the your computer? If you do, could you please run the game with the following attributes

Go to the directory where EVE is installed and create a shortcut for the EVE process ( eve.exe ) when the shortcut has been created right click on "eve.exe - shortcut" and select properties.

In the shortcut tab under Target add /nolightfx behind the target line so it'll look something similar to this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /nolightfx

Once this has been done, start the EVE client normally, and see if the problem persists.

I do not run alienware, no. I could try restoring to an earlier system restore a couple of days ago, since I restored the same day that minor client patch came out?

edit: tried no light anyway, didnt work.

Its like the bug just freezes the exe, if I alt tab it looks ike its crashing and after I enter my pw the background of the main screen where the sansha ship is freezes its animation and the client becomes unresponsive.

You can try and do that. If it still fails, could you please file a petition about this under Technical / Crashes/Lockups, and assuming you're running Windows OS please include DXDIAG and logserver file of the issue, instructions below.

1. Please run the DirectX diagnostics tool: Press Windows Key + R and type DXDIAG in the Run Window
2. Click the "Save All Information" button that's located in its lower right corner.

Could you please run the game with logserv running and reproduce the problem and send us the logserv file. Reproduction step are very important part of the report. Write exactly what you did to make the problem happen. This will help the programmers see where the problem is, and hopefully make it happen on their own computers. Reproduction steps are required for your report to be useful, even if you have attached logs to your report.

Using the logserver
(to minimize problems with this, its recommended that you either restart your computer or check Task managers process list for unresponsive instances of Eve.exe)

1. Find your Eve folder in Windows Explorer
2. When you have the Eve folder open, find "logserver.exe" and launch it (Do NOT have EVE running)
3. Select "File" -> "New Workspace"
4. Start Eve like you would normally do
5. When you have reproduced the bug, Eve crashes or when you kill the process if it hangs, select "File" -> "Save workspace as..." and save the workspace in a place you'll find it again.

Could you please upload the files by login into https://support.eveonline.com/Pages/Petitions/CreatePetition.aspx and filing a petition from there.

I attempted a system restore to yesterday (the day of the virus) as it was the most recent system restore point, the previous ones have been taken out of the options list sadly. The system restore failed so I do not have that option it seems. Unless anyone has anymore ideas it looks like I will have to redownload and install the client, deleting what I have now and starting from scratch?

Well, you can additionally try and clear the settings as well if you only cleared the cache files so far.

1) Start the EVE client (do not login yet).
2) Press ESC or click on the Settings button and go to the 'Reset Settings' tab and click on the 'Clear' button for 'Clear all settings'
3) The client will prompt you to restart the client, click yes on that prompt
4) Once the client has been restarted login normally and see if that fixes the issue.

Yep this seems to have fixed it. Sadly now I have to recreate everything as if it was a new install :( Thank you for the help

My apologies for that, but sadly as the client even refuses to login there's no real way to save the settings. Reinstalling the client most likely would have not fixed the issue either, since the problem seems to have been in one of the settings files.
