TL;DR Version - EvE Overpopulated? C/D

_________________________________________________________________________________

TL;R Version - Although I am sure a large number of people would rather discuss, argue, troll more enjoyable topics within EvE (ie. Standing Resets, Free (INSERT NAME HERE) posts, and ofcourse, "Lagmonster Revenge" threads), and it is great to see thread content that is civil and productive.

Bobbeh hit on something I believe may be causing some of the issues within New Eden at the moment in a previous thread within CAOD( http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1486243 ). The viable portions of the map are too small in comparison to the growing population within EvE. Some other MMO's (That-Which-Shall-Not-Be-Named) have multiple servers for players to populate... We have Tranquility. Simply put, Playerbase grows, New Eden does not.

Similarly to some countries in real life (ie. India / Reference Overpopulation), EvE is breaking records for how many people they can manage to fit in one place. I am not saying for one minute we should go server crazy and start creating mirror images of New Eden for alternate versions of the game, as I enjoy our "sandbox". I just think maybe there are too many kids playing in the same small box, and maybe the idea to expand is not a bad idea.

As far as references to "its just a game, not real life", that is a given and understood. Consider the following for a second. Economics, Politics, Diplomacy, Warfare among other things have all been developed over time by humans. That statement is true for EvE, game mechanics, and even how we play the game (ie. Blob/mob mentality in warfare and politics, and Coalitions to include Non Aggression Pacts). some have already said that they believe it is human nature that drives our own interpretation of the way the game is playing out, and they may be right. Some mechanics within the game may also be fueling this mentality, but that is to further the discussion.

We can all agree that it would be cool as hell if Titans and Jumpbridges were real, but I understand that this is not true(maybe). Unfortunately, I am deployed and ofcourse am deprived of a life outside work, so here we are. Fundamentals and foundation of the game and the players may be what is impacting the game, and if this is the case, we should look at changing the way humans think... Unfortunately history doesn't support that option too well(ie. Mass Genocide, Koolaid Cults, and Rap music).

This is just my two cents worth... maybe less. C/D

We used to have 65000 players online. Nowadays 50000 is a lot. So, no EVE can't be overpopulated.

Just for clarity, I am not referring to overpopulation of Capsuleers online at the same time. I am referencing overpopulation of a single map.

Lagmonster issues is most definitely not the major concept behind my question... Cool

The other thread in CAOD gets into the overall topic a little better, and I thought it would be cool to bring the discussion into General Discussion.

Your memory does serve you right. It topped a value that was quite normal 2 years ago.

At least it feels overpopulated to me. Not in the sense that it couldn't handle more, but in a way that everywhere I go others are already living there. I miss the time when you could go to some ass crack of a place on the map and in all propability hardly anyone was there. Now it is rare to see those kind of places. They do exist, especially if you play during a specific time of the day, but they are becoming rarer to find.

In a way it is a good thing, but I still think we could use more space between existing regions, that would create new pathways between old regions in addition to creating more space and resources for people to fight over and exploit.

tbh I preferred Eve when the server averaged 3K players.

If you notice, I said "viable portions of the map". That was in the TL;R portion though. Maybe you missed that part. The overpopulation may not be prevalent throughout all of New Eden, but I have seen the massive amount of players blobbing for various areas. I think it would be a good idea to increase the map with some more viable space to fight over...

Go to Aridia, fly around for a bit, then come back and talk about overpopulation.

When people bring this up they are usually referring to wormholes and high sec. And from what I've seen there also, there is still plenty of room to move around.

I don't think we'll see overpop issues for a long, long time in this game.

D

P.s. I think adding newly 'discovered' areas would be fine. I have no problem with expanding territory and adding to the star map. But I do not think the game as it is can be considered overpopulated.

This is correct. The population of Eve has grown over the past years however there have been really only a few regions added(ignoring WH space on purpose). Eve does need to expand but also needs to be shaped and changed from what it is now.

Lastly adding space without limiting movement will only cause the new space to be occupied by a major power very quickly. So in all honesty JBs need to be limited to 1 per system, titan bridges need to be nerfed, jump range needs to be reduced on combat caps, JCs need to be limited in some way. Doing this will cause people to localize more, cause more "turf wars". It will also make it more difficult for large coalitions to exist and/or support their allies.

I would add more but iam sleepy.

Does nobody remember when they opened up the Drone Regions?

New Eden has and will probably expand again.

If you want space in EVE, leave empire.

D.

The only places that are generally overpopulated are highsec areas (especially caldari space), and wormholes with direct empire k-space connections (especially highsec connections). on the other hand, nullsec, lowsec, and c4/c5/c6 wormholes - there are tons of vacant or near-vacant systems if you look. May not always be the best or the safest, but they're there.

Eve is not overpopulated by any means. there are way to many systems that have zero people in them. low sec, high sec and null sec.

the problem with 0.0 is the nap fest that destroys anyone that tries to stake a claim in any of the unused systems.

your alliance currently holds 49 systems. you dont even use 1/2 of them. get rid of the bloated nap fest, huge alliances that dont use 1/2 of the space they hold and your problem is solved.

but that will never happen.

What about the whole area of space surrounding Jove space? Isn't there a rather large section of null sec that is currently off limits?

I understand that some may be concerned with large alliances taking over right away, but I'd like to mention that for any group to simply "claim" 20+ additional systems would really spread them thin, no? I may be wrong, I'm a total null sec noob, but math seems to sudgest my above statement.

Also, Am I missing something about that section of space? I for one would LOVE for CCP to expand on the whole Jove thing. I appreciate how mysterious they are, but I feel like that whole mythos was kind of placed on the back-burner for a long time.

This and EvE reminds me alot of Canada.
It has this ecumene where everyone lives and then it's a barren wasteland but for good reason. It's not worth living in the barren wasteland.

I want to address this rather glib statement.

Null sec is not the problem. It is the alliances that control null sec I perceive are problem, and you cannot do anything with a small group.
They (the alliances) usually demand massive payments to rent null sec space (or in Goons case) get scammed while trying to join them.

If you succeed then what so what to do when out there?

Mine, Rat and build.

Mining is the easiest and what do you do with the proceeds? Sell them (of course) but to who?

Ratting gives you isks and loot and whether you keep it as loot or convert to mins, you still need to sell it - but TO WHO?

Build - how do you get isks for your product - Sell it of course but TO WHO?????

See going and doing stuff in null sec is all in good but the way you make the isk is to take it to a hub and SELL it and these are only found in empire.

So you set off in your freighter (which you need alot of friends to help you out with escort wise)- come across a gatecamp - lose the lot and get podded for your effort ....

Well - that was fun... now lets indulge in some more futility shall we ... roam anyone?

So that is a fairly true and correct appraisal of WHY null sec is empty

But that wasteland is actually quite scenic. Not to mention occasionally full of diamonds.

I think expansion could be cool. But not in the way of new servers, but more in the way of new systems and such. Add another wormhole to another galaxy, kinda Like the New eden one, and we can have our own rush for land grab. Of course each major faction could also grab some. And open up Jove space, that can't be to awful small and would be much more room to fit everyone into.

Just expand the actual game, not make new servers.

I started out in that region when I first started in Eve. The problem with it since then it's full of evil pirates. When I say full, I mean insofar as it only takes 1 mooching around to ruin your best laid plans.
