I remember someone once telling me to get multiple battleship rats you had kill all cruisers, leave frigs/cruisers alone, or something like that

Anyone know the right formula?

Rule I used was BS bounty less than 1 mil a piece wipe it out completely. Around 1.2 mil chain it.

When chianing a good spawn, just leave something alive in the spawn. If for example the spawn has scramming frigates....kill them and leave the cruisers.

No scrammers, kill the cruisers for some more isk, leave the frigates.

Kill bs first to make sure no scrammers what I do. I have had to break chains when intel showing a hac roam hauling ass through systems and notice the 1 frigate I left was a scramming one.

Also wathc your drones...they get motivated and kill off frigates before you know it.

Near as can recall, the standard approach when belt ratting is to chain the rat: killing the battleships, but leaving the frigates and the cruisers, so that the battleships will respawn. Some folk will kill off the entire spawn if the battleships have low bounties. See the old Provi Ratting Guide for more details. This approach guarantees a certain level of income, since the destroyed battleships will always respawn, although not necessarily in the same belt, since the spawns will bounce from belt to belt, and from belt to gate at random.

In theory, if you're the only person belt ratting in a system, you can kill off all the spawns in the hopes of getting faction or an officer spawn, which can be worth hundreds of millions in items dropped. However, most alliances and corporations require you to chain rats when in a populated system.
