F*cking Magnets, How Do They Work?
Invictra and in this post I will try to explain my theory on the
PI extraction and why the numbers before the install don't match with those after you install a program.
Planets in EVE are filled with dots that carry 0%-100% of a resource. The PI scanning system takes a square of dots and based on their average value we see a colored heat map. How big the square is that determines the color is defined by the Planetology and Advanced Planetology skils. It is also true that a longer extraction program covers more dots than a smaller one. Below are two example images that shows a 14 day program radius and an 1h program radius. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images.
We can see that 4/4
skills cover an area of 7x7
dots. With 5/4
skills we would get a higher resolution and with 5/5
skill the best possible resolution that covers only an area of 5x5
dots. How big the difference actually is is shown on the next image. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images.
Now for the before and after magical install program button. How it works. 1st you move your extractors and get only an estimate on how much it could extract. For my 4/4 skills it takes the average of 7x7 dots and it calculates how much I might get. You can see that my heatmap on the 1st pictures is somewhere between yellow and green. But if you look at the dots some of the area should be more red and some more blue. Ok so now I hit install and the system takes the dots that the extraction head can reach and calculates the average of how much I can extract. Hmm ...the 14 day cycle is not that much off. We see that is covers almost the same area as the 7x7 square. So the average of the dots for my 4/4 skills and the 14 day cycle are almost the same. With the 1h cycle we get another story. The average of 2 dots that the extraction head covers is much higher as the average of the 49 dots of the 4/4 skill. We couldn't see that the area is actually red and not green. The estimate that was made before the installation of the program thought that those 2 dots are green.
