This is false. EVE uses a modern relational database which means all data is related to each-other using ID's and not named values.

So if CharA wanted to change his name to CharB and incidentally CharC knew CharA by name - CharC's human counterpart would only be left with a "massive brain footprint of workload" to deal with. (Having to realize that CharA is now known as CharB).

It would only change 8 bits of data in one table, in one column, in one single row of CCP's database. (Assuming they store text values in UTF-8).

My opinion is that this forum has argued most of what is to be had by this feature and change. I believe for all of the actual arguments against name changes and my history idea(s) there has been valid compromises/additions to supplement the opposition and result in an implementation without a loss of identity.

From what I can see the only remaining opposition to this idea are the trolls, people who simply stated objections without reason, individuals who are not open to compromise and negotiation, or those who simply did not constructively voice their objection. If there are further points to be made I will still monitor this thread.

However, it would seem the remainder of this is up to CCP.

There could be nothing to stop someone from selling their character to themselves for 1 isk to get a name change.

If you allow it at all, just allow it. Period.

Personally I don't even like the idea of selling characters. It's like someone saying, I want to play but don't want to invest any time of effort into it, so I'll just buy my way to the top. That's got "I'm a loser" written all over it.

This isn't a complain about character trading thread. How does a character lose identity to a name change if the history ideas are implemented? That is the thread topic.

(Keep in mind name changes and selling/trading characters are two completely separate things. Trading/selling is already established and implemented therefore has no point to be argued any more than it has already in this thread.)

I found this thread because, as someone who's used to EVERY OTHER MMO which offers a name change feature, I was considering wanting to pay to change my name. I don't even have much of a reputation, so my name doesn't mean much of anything. But apparently, I can't change it to something else I want, because of possible thieves?

WoW has 12 million players, you can rob your guild bank blind and then either name change (which keeps you on the same friends/block lists because of relational databases), or for a true escape, you just go transfer to another server.

Nonetheless, I don't think the actions of a few should mean a common and desired ability for cosmetic use should be restricted.

you cant change because CCP said so.

but if you must have reasons I can guess that they advertise eve as
people making a name for themselves, and how 1 persons actions affect thousands
of others.
so why would they let people avoid that, if thats an advertising point for them?

how would name change affect this? you could say "yes, i'm that person. look at my history". everyone else would say "yes, they are that person. it's in their history."

it's far better solution than transfers now, which go directly against what you say CCP advertises.

People who make names for themselves, often change their names. ;) Off-hand, I recall Katy Perry was bored Kathy Hudson, changed her name to differentiate from the actor.

People with fame will keep that fame even if they change their name. Especially if everything's still tied to their ID. If you have a bounty on your head, and you change your name, your bounty will now list your new name, no difference.

So is there any chance to a CCP response in this forum? (let alone this thread)

Yes, some criminals try to change their identity too. there even have been notable cases where most wanted criminal have changed name and face through plastic surgery and finger print masking. This is not real life and the FBI isn't going to track you down.. players have to. you want to rename yourself.. I propose that your old name has to be listed first.. and then your new name. Or forget the whole thing.

Consequence of ripping off a large alliance for billions... you are hounded for the rest of your gaming experience..and you carry a bad rep.. live with it.

Yes, what you mention is the entire thread's proposal and compromise to the situation. So I guess that means we agree :)

Well the last (and pretty old) statement was that they will most likely not offer it. There have been countless threads about name changeing, I don't think I have seen another statement concerning it since.

This is one universe and whatever you do, it should stick with you. Even your suggested compromise (you are not the first one, nor will you be the last one to come up with a name history of some sort) WILL water that down.

If a guy jumps into a system, I want to know who he is at a glance. No klicking and scanning name history, not him saying: "Hey, I bought that char and changed the name."

And for the char buying stuff: having to live with the name and skills the bought char has is about the only thing that makes buying SP with RL cash "balanced".

but you can't know who they are from a glance at name. it's improbable they you will ever know more than a fraction of names at any one time. how people act and what is your relation to their activity is far more important than name alone.

in a perfect world player=character, sure. but not in a internet game.

It's confirmed in lore that as soon as someone is born they can never change their name because CONCORD wants to make sure that 'consequences' of their actions remain.

Changing your name is verboten in the EVE Universe as though there's unlimited freedom, morphing a nickname into permanent name is just too much!

What you say doesn't happen now... When someone jumps into system you use standings, not names.

If you use names, it is only a matter of time before you start using standings due to the vast amount of hostile players in this game. With the idea put forward nothing would change. A red is still a red. You don't remember every hostile character name that has shot at you. You remember 'this guy is bad' because you put standings on him.

As it stands right now, you don't know who someone is by a "glance." You find out by reviewing his history and standings.

Also I'm not understanding what you are saying about character purchasing. If you are saying it creates 'game balance' by making people keep their names, that is just silly. The majority of people purchasing characters aren't doing so to avoid identities they created, they just want x skills for y money. The "compromises" are ideas put forward to make it so if CCP allows name changes.. Nothing will change from how it is now. Players will still retain identities.

If that is true than the lore and CCP's policy say you can't, but being able to purchase/sell characters says you can. I again want to reiterate that I don't want this thread to turn into a debate about the pros and woes of purchasing and selling characters by putting that point forward, but to keep it about how implementing the features I proposed prevent players from losing their identities by changing a name.

Please provide the links to those topics then. I don't doubt a similar idea has been proposed, but I do doubt that CCP flat out said no to everything mentioned in this thread.

I am well aware of their stance that if they implement a name change service without any sort of tracking history and way for players to search for those past names it opens the ability to change your identity. I have never heard nor seen CCP argue or debate about tracking and search functions added in for the purpose of this service. That is basically what I am asking to see.

Allow name change: YES

This is NO sql/database issues with doing this, TRUST me. Your char's database entry is ID based, NOT name based.

When I first started playing this game back in 2008, I spelt my name wrong, and after asking, CCP fixed it.

Again, THIS IS NO, REPEAT NO SQL ISSUES FROM CHANGING YOUR CHAR NAME.

For all the trolls who say "No name changes allowed" then fine, don't change YOUR name, I don't care.

First: you are assuming that hyperlinks on the server is the only way people kept notes on those who stepped on their toes over the years.

Second: they would also have to change most of the tags attached to the hyperlinks to that name if they are to do a good job.

I mean it would look pretty stupid If I click on a "name" and have the info show me a whole different name. Not to mention the fact that over time some chars will end up with lots of aliases which makes it hard for players to exchange info on certain chars without using hyperlinks.

Although I, too, have chars I'd like to have their names changed, I say: "HELL NO"
Overall, it is not good idea (creates more inconvenience than it solves)

I would like to change this toons name, self-explanatory enough.
Altho my request was shot down, twice. Same reason both times, "not breaking the EULA/policies". Which seems to be the only way to be renamed, if your name breaks the rules.

I can't see any reason at all not to allow name changes from a game play perspective as long as the old name shows up in the employment history.

From a technical point of view maybe the name is part of some unique key in the database, in which case that would make things a bit tricky when changing it. Still, as long as they did name changes during a downtime or extended downtime when they'd have time to re-generate indexes and such it shouldn't be a problem.

And yes, I am somewhat prejudiced on this subject because the name I chose almost 8 years ago sucks.

If you look at a eve "hyper-link" you'll see something like this showinfo://2343524 (not exactly but) it has an ID number, not a name. Any smart SQL programmer would use ID based entry data, your char "name" is only DIRECTLY called when you search for the name, send a message, etc. when you click on their name in local, chat, or anytime you click the char name in game, it calls it by ID.

Argue the idea, not the mechanics. CCP already has the tool to do this in place.

Notes, standings, 'hyperlinks', names, and other associated information are pulled from a userID. Also the data argument is again something that will go on and on as mentioned earlier in the thread as since none of us work for CCP there is no way to prove inside info in the event of in-house software/databases. It's a they can do this, no they can't do that, kind of argument which can be assumed due to modern programming practices, but not 100% proven unless an associate decides to break their confidentiality agreement or get board/helmar's explicit permission. (Or whoever has authority to authorize such information release Wink )

Why do you feel it creates more inconveniences than it solves?
