Right, before I start this is not a moaning thread, I am actually mildly amused although I have petitioned to get my ship back...

A friend transported a ship for me to null sec from high sec because of my sec status. When he got to null sec he parked the Rattlesnake at zero in our POS and for a laugh started the self destruct...

He ejected from the ship and we thought all was well because there were no timers. 1 minute 45 seconds later he gets a notification that the ship is about to blow up and well, you get the rest.

I got no timers, we both tried to stop the self destruct but couldnt (I was in the Rattlesnake at the time, he was sat next to me in his pod.

I believe he tried to hit self destruct again to cancel it from happening and all that did was set his pod self destructing (which eventually it did I think because he didnt cancel that either).

Losing a faction / deadspace fit ship in this manner at least provided great lol's for the entire of corp for around an hour or so. Especially as I had used it for a total of about 90 seconds, I would have to say thats the shortest lived ship I have ever had :)

So onto the actual question, shouldn't a self destruct deactivate if you eject from the ship? I am wondering now, if I had docked up or put the ship into the POS's maintenance array, would the timer have stopped.

Seems odd that he would get the notifications in his log and not mine considering I was in the ship at the time.

Have petitioned to get the ship back, if not he has a large bill coming his way :)

Please direct all lol's and stupid comments to the one and only Regenbald in game, I am sure he will love to hear from you all :) :) :)

Oh yeah another strange thing.

Here is his notifications.

21:32:23 Notify Ship stopping
21:31:09 Notify Your Rattlesnake will self-destruct in 1 Minute 19 Seconds
21:32:29 Notify Your Rattlesnake self-destructs.
21:32:29 Notify Rattlesnake belonging to Regenbald self-destructs.

I got the insurance payout though, so basically the way this works is that an enemy could eject from his ship and save his pod and not get a lossmail, but whoever jumps into the ship gets the insurance payout.

Something tells me that a little wrong...

Im trying to find the insurance notification in EVE Gate atm but cant find it. Im not home so I cannot login to the game.

Will post a screenshot later as well for everyone to laugh at.

eve is a harsh mistress,

but from this I assume that :-
1) he starts SD
2) he ejects
3) you board
4) he gets the final warning
5) the ship you are in pops

now - the SD sequence should not stop if you eject, but it should if someone boards the ship.

I'd petition it TBH

but don't do it again ;-p

That is exactly what happened.

I have petitioned it.

Just wondering if that is working as intended or not. If so I am just going to start self destruct and eject every single time I get blobbed from now on, hopefully someone will board the ship...

Why, if I get blobbed and decide to sd and eject, because I'm in a T3, I don't want them boarding it and seizing it, I want it to blow the **** up in their face. Laughing

Both comments have merit, seems a bit of a gray area that needs sorting out.

That is the way it works. The ship doesn't care if you eject, it still self destructs. To cancel it you have to still be in the ship, and tell it to self destruct again. Your friend would have had to self destruct for the 2ed time before he ejected for it to stop the countdown.

When you got the self destruct log you should have tried to cancel it. Cancelling has its own log that says it was cancelled, and was going to blow up in xx seconds.

If would have had to be before he ejected. And there is a timer before you can cancel, its about as long as a session change. But if it fails because of the timer it will tell you how long you have to wait to cancel.

Edit - I just tested this with 2 accounts and it is working. But the timing is very tight.

Self destruct is 2 minutes
1)set self destruct - can't eject or cancel for 30 secs
2)eject - session change time 30 secs
3)get abord ship - session change timer 30 sec
4)You can't cancel the self destruct until the session change timer is over

So we are talking a max of 30 seconds to cancel the self destruct when you get in the ship, but I was able to cancel it, both times I did I had under 15 seconds left. And I was ready and waiting on the timers. Even after someone else boards the ship the one to set the timer will still get the self destruct notifications until its canceled.

2ed edit - After messing with it a little more I'm not sure what happened in your case. You can cancel a ship self destruct from your pod (something I wasn't aware of) or you can cancel it by boarding and turning it off as well. So both of you should have had the ability to cancel it.

How many times did he try and "cancel"? If he tried once that would have cancelled the self-destruct. If he tried twice then that only reactivates the SD sequence. Three times, and well, you get the drill. To be honest, it sounds like your friend messed up in keeping track on what he was doing.

tl;dr Idiots learn how self destruct functions with a expensive ship.

The only thing that cancels it automatically is entering warp.

I'm guessing the timing was just off then although I didn't try to cancel it until the last second when he said he had a timer.

Either way its a little stupid.

The other thing I guess is that the person in the ship should get the timer. Also if he set the timer how come I got the insurance payout...

Because the insurance payout always goes to the last pilot to actually fly the ship.

Don't fix it, make it an adjustable timer so you can set it for 2 hours, leave an "abandoned" ship hanging around, and watch someone's pod explode. Didn't Star Trek do that more than once to kill Klingons when they beamed over?

You more than likely will not get reimbursed, but you may want to /bug it so someone can take a look at self destruct mechanics. Imo, should cancel when you eject, or at least show a timer and be able to be cancelled (without warping) upon someone entering the ship.

Well hopefully they will have a look at the mechanics as it does seem a little weird.

Regenbald is willing to pay for it but he is saving ISK for something at the moment so I have not asked him for it. I just stole his Gila off him until its sorted out :P

I'm surprisingly not annoyed, probably due to the fact I just laughed when it happened as if it was the most ironic thing ever, the shortest lived Rattlesnake in EVE history!!!

I do not see why they wouldn't reimburse it, I have petitioned losses before and always get the same stock response back of no logs etc but I have screen shots and everything this time. We shall see how it goes anyway, I dont want to fork out another 1b ISK to refit a ship...

You started self destruct, fooled around. Missed the timers and lost the ship.

Reimburse what? Its like saying you ran across the freeway and got run over. And now want compensation for it.

Accept the loss for stupidity and learn. Instead of wasting GMs time with nonsense.
