Since I happened to have 2 computers, both running same OS (XP Pro SP3), same DirectX versions and same video drivers (Catalyst 10.2) but where the icons loaded on one computer but not on the other I decided to dig a little bit deeper.

The occurs when eve first fails to load certain icons from the cache. For instance "Pictures/Gids/SM_2_0_LO_2764_0_4_64.dds" in my case.

When it fail to load this data from the cache it assigns a default "not available" icon (the exclamation mark) and marks this to be updated later on.

Which works beautifully on my dinky old laptop, but fails on my somewhat less dinky AMD-64 box.

After browsing the logs and locating where the laptop updates this file I checked the same function calls in the other logfile and found what seems to be the issue.

It fails in "TakeSnapShotUsingBoundingBox" trying to create SM_2_0_LO_2764_0_4_64.dds.

I've verified my theory by copying the Pictures/Gids directory from the laptop to the main. And lo and behold I got my icons back.

What might make it complicated to find is that it's an asynchronous process that updates those icons, and once it crashes no further icons appears to be processed in that window.

Hope this can help.

I still show a "!" with a black background for most of my ships... Kinda hard to know which one you need to fly when you only got the name to go by... Guess I have to rename them according to ship type/name... :( :(

Im having issues with icons as well. I dont get a "!" instead I get a pixelated thumbnail with each pixel being a different color or I get the wrong thumb. I had this issue before last patch, filed a petition and after 5 days was given a "fix". I was told (using ATI gpu) to "disable Catalyst A.I, which helped for awhile. Now the issue is back and clearing cache makes it worse like posted here. Please fix this ccp, it is getting old.

I would file another petition but waiting 5 days for a response isn't something I look forward to.Maybe posting here will be quicker Idea.

Posting to confirm this issue also. The only ship that shows up for me is the Echelon. Also, it appears that station portraits are in the same boat. Character portraits all appear fine though.

I think it's awesome that you were able to nail this down, but man-- playing a game shouldn't require us to be computer science buffs. I'm also glad we have a CCP response to this issue, but it's obviously not "random" (the way I see it at least) although I'm sure it may be tough to nail down. Anyway, can we just go back to Dominion? Everything seemed to work great then. In all seriousness though, I hope this all gets sorted out. EVE is a great game, but these sort of issues are beginning to negatively affect that.

Same problem here ....

Ship and Drones Icons are a black icon with a white exclamation point.

Any fix after the 2/22 client update?

i tried to delete all files in my pictures folder, ran repair tool.
The same already ok icons are there, but the exclamation points are all at the same places.
And it's nearly all my ships...

It actually is close to random, or rather seriously hairy to track down.

As I stated I'm playing on two boxes, my main AMD-64 and my dinky old HP/CPQ 6715s, with identical OS, all same patches, identical DirectX and videodrivers (since there are closely related videoboards in them).

I even use the same graphic settings, have the same amount of video RAM, and you name it.

There's a minor diff since the laptop has a built in ATI/Radeon something and the other has an AGP ATI/Radeon something similar.

Yet I don't have any issues on the laptop, while no ship/drone/bpc icons on the main one (unless I cheat and manually copy the cached files from the laptop).

I think that it might come down to either a glitch deep down in the Radeon drivers, that only trigger on certain boards, or some other software installed.

But the bottom line is that despite having the bug very obvious on my computer, I can't even replicate it myself, using an almost identical setup. So I can understand that CCP is having some severe headscratching to perform to localise the bug.

Despite being the proud owner of an ego the size of a small planet I find this a wee bit overkill ;)

However, there's one thing that rather relates Incursion and the pretty faces expansion.

The exception occurs in a function named "TakeSnapShotUsingBoundingBox" which I assume is used to normalise various stored models/texture/doodaas into a 2d icon/image of selected size.

It's not totally unlikely that this function, or functions that it calls, has been poked quite severely with foreign and possibly pointy objects to render the pretty faces some of us sports in the game (and on the forums).

Which in turn leads me to suspect that the changes made are quite extensive but in totally different areas of the codebase.

Leading to the all too common cry from perplexed coders of complex software: "WTF? How could _that_ break?! That code hasn't been touched in years!"

Have the same issue
Was told that it is due to old Radeon cards
and that the problem can be replecated using new cards with old drivers.

Newest catalyst legacy drivers from AMD
Reccomended drivers from Omega

Neither causes the issue to change in the least.
maybe someone could upload an archive of ship icons from their cache so we can get a temp fix like the above poster?

I've been having same problem, and was told by a GM (after 2 petitions and a bug report) that it was an ATI Radeon issue, but noticed on another thread that someone with an nVidia is having the problem too:

I'm having the same problem on my iMac. It runs with an nVidia GT 6700 gpu, so I'm convinced that this isn't specific to Raedon drivers as has been suggested.

The newsletter had a dev blog article by CCP Atlas that discusses recent changes to the icon system (Linkage). It wouldn't surprise me if something in these changes has led to the issues we are all having.

Posted in the Mac section and submitted a petiton/bugreport but thought to take a more closer look at this. So i simply made a list of ships i can/can't see from the marketview.

Ships i CAN see.

Battlecruisers:

Commandships: Claymore, Sleipnir.
BC's: Cyclone

Battleships:

BlackOps's: Widow, Panther.
Marauders: none.
Navy Faction BS: All are visible, except Raven Navy Issue
Pirate BS visible: Nightmare, Rattlesnake
Normal BS visible: Abbadon, Scorpion, Dominix, Typhoon

Capital Ships:

Capital Industrial Ships: Orca, but no Rorqual.
Carriers: Nidhoggur and Revenant visible, rest isn't.
Dreads: none
Freighters or JF's: none.
Titans: none.

Cruisers:

HAC'S: none.
Hictor's: none.
Logistics: Scimitar only
Recon's: Curse, Falcon + Rook
T3's work fine.

Navy Faction Cruisers: Adrestia, Mimir, Scythe Fleet Issue, Stabber Fleet Issue, rest invisible.
Pirate Faction: Phantasm, rest invisible.
Standard Cruisers: Blackbird, Scythe, Stabber, nothing more.

Destroyers:

Interdictors: Heretic, Eris, Sabre. Only Flycatcher is missing.
Standard Destroyers: Coercer, Catalyst. Cormorant & Thrasher missing.

Frigates:

AF's: Hawk, nothing else.
CovOp's: Anathema, Purifier, Cheetah.
EAF's: none.
Interceptors: none.
Navy Faction: Freki + Utu, nothing else.
Pirate Faction: Succubus.
Special Frigates: Echelon, Zephyr.

Standard Frigates: Magnate, Punisher

Industrial Ships:

Transports: none
Standard: Noctis, Primae, nothing else.

Mining Barges:

Exumers: Hulk, Mackinaw, Skiff
Barges: Covetor, Procurer, Retriever

Shuttles: none.

First i had the impression that if the Tech1 version is showing, the Tech2 is ok as well. But that isn't allways the case. Thrasher is a no show, but the Sabre is ok for example. Phoon is ok, so is the Panther. Dominix shows but the Sin doesn't.

Just looked into the ship blueprint section. Shipicon's not showing in the market aren't visible there eigther.

Another thing: I have for example a Dramiel in my Hangar. Name is showing, i see the Faction indication triangle, only the frigate image is missing. So that Icon container knows what he is, but can't find/generate the right image.

These icons worked allright for years. Since Incursion and the introduction of the Character Creation and the new way of showing player Icon's, this bug occures. So it might be an idea to check what changed in the icon generation system that also affect the shipicon's that are generated to find this error.

I hope that the list above gives some help there.

Abbadon is displayed/generated correctly but the Apocalypse and Armageddon is not. So what is different? Something like that.

I have exactly the same problem.

This is no issue whilst in station but the icons for ships don't load whilst out in space either.

This is a real problem in combat however as you have to refer to the overview all the time in order to know which ship type you are agressing.

Will CCP refund my ships because of not being able to apply ECM drones fast enough due to this problem?

Same problem here, No ship/drone/station icons.
I noticed that some of the icons of ships I own do not show in the hanger, but they do show in the market interface (not in all cases tho).

Also after clearing my cache, all planets in PI mode are big black balls with my structures on them. no surface texture on any of them, nor does my scanning interface show up. which is really annoying since i currently got no way of moving my extractors to other locations since i cant see the mineral concentrations.

please ccp, fix this

Adding my frustrated screams to the crowd, that would like to see a fix for this problem and soon.

I also use ATI Radeon (in my case Xpress 1100) but there werent any problems before Incursion was inplemented.

Possible solution: get rid of that fancy avatar generation again?

I have this problem too. I posted in my old thread I had a shortcut to before I saw this one.

I hope they are actually still reading this thread. But I would be kind of surprised. Shocked I think, they think, they already heared about it, and nothing new here to see.

Any Ways I will quote some posts I hope 'they' see.

Small update, managed to get my ship pics back.

Just restored a full picture and ship folder cache from a copy I took back in December.

Not an ideal solution, but it's worked for me.

Would be great if you could post the ship pics folder somewhere, would at least give us a workaround til CCP get their finger out of their a**hole.

In all the ****ing around I did to try and fix this I deleted ALL my cache and settings folders Confused

I too am experiencing this same problem. What I have noticed is that the ships that are showing are ones in which have had new models recently. The older models are not showing. This problem started after I cleared my cache to get the incursions to show up in my journal.
