soo when is CCP aiming to make a more action oriented Ship combat ?

at the moment its click shot lame.

its easy to do a fun combat just copy paste Star Trek Bridge Commander, Freelancer etc.

Personal Skill Above Level is the way to go. Levels are just bonuses.

It is fun.

If you disagree and want to play Bridge Commander, I recommend you play Bridge Commander.

been doing combat for 4 years still not fun.

line of sight fire needed, Collision damage needed Nawo.

last patch was a smack in the face to all PIers and Wormholers.

was a Smack in the face to the avatars. to limited in options from what promised.

this isn't possible, you can't have freelancer style combat in a game with 60 thousand people online at the same time, it would be a cluster****, you are inept at thinking.

FOR a more appealing response:
CCP can't cheerily change combat without chancing clog.

..whats wrong with it now?

Weapons graphics is pretty kewl
The ability to mix/match customize your own ship rocks
Coordinating attacks...needs some work (squad formations would be nice) but is still fun

You're missunderstanding eve....its not a shoot em up game. go play startrek online for mindless graphics and piont and click shooting...no no in eve, a knowledgable newbie can be just as effective and blowing people up as a seasoned vet.

Eve Combat is just as much outsmarting your opponent as it is locking him with lasers and going PEW PEW. It's about knowing how to apply what pressure and where...And teamwork to apply this pressure.

You have much yet to learn young one!

it is possible. never say its impossible. its just that CCP aint going to improve that. when it comes to cluster **** thats what Space Combat should be. Star Wars Style Big player controlled ships that Launches fighters(controlled by Players), thats a fleet op.

well CCP aint gonna do it so im looking to infinity and other games like Prophecy to do it. if you want the SCFI market make the game SCFI. and not ECOFI

So it took you 4 years to realize this is not Counter Strike in space?

Yea, LoS-fiering would be kinda cool. Just won't work with current mechanics, computing power, etc.. Just like collision damage and direct control.

Jumpgate Evolutions boasted lagless direct control space combat for fleets fights larger than in Eve. It's on indefinite hiatus though. Black Prophecy looks promising, and is a free to play mmo.

Seems to me it's about as exciting as you can make space combat while still having some semblance of simulation about it.

Let's face it, fun as Freelancer and a host of space fighter games before that were, the notion of "jet fighters in space" is just lolworthy as far as realism goes.

As I understand it, real space battles would be a combination of mind-numbingly tedious strategy for weeks and days, with nothing happening, and then fractions of a second in which things would be decided so fast that un-enhanced humans would blink and miss it.

Human beings would HAVE to be heavily enhanced to have any chance of participating in the ultra fast bits, otherwise, it would have to be all done by computer.

I think EVE does a pretty good job of simulating this very un-intuitive (to us cavemen) kind of battle, given the constraint of it space/time compression and having to have some gamey element that can be completed in the average play session of a friendless, loveless virgin sitting in their mom's basement.

How did you make that conclusion on games that haven't came out and you've never played? There was suspicion of Jumpgate being vaporware because it's simple enough to potentially be one. The few demos can be scripted. Black Prophecy is different. The model of a single station has bigger polygon count than all of Eve's station models combined. The raw amount of work put into the graphics seen from gameplay videos suggest it's unlikely to be vaporware. Unless they put 99% of their devs on graphics and ignore everything else, it would be at least presentable, if not inspired.

Why, oh why? Can't they see it? Nobody ever asked to have it? Oh, wait a minute: what do you do when you got 60,000 people in a server?

They already told it. The server (ONE server for 60,000 people) generates a "frame" each second i.e. it updates every clients' situation every second. That's how it works, ticking at one frame per second, and there's no way to make it better without putting all that 60.00 people in the same room.

Anyone who can do what you ask in the real world, with real internet connections, should do it right now and quick EVE out of the market. Any volunteers? You? It's easy, just synchronize 60,000 people every second 23 1/2 hours a day... and do so fast enough that one tenth of a second means the difference between victory or defeat. Just notice, one tenth of a second, 100 ms, is an excellent ping. And many of your users will need three or four times longer just to tell you they are there...

Good luck, hero. Go succeed. Show CCP how this things are done. Cool

Not to mention if CCP were to take real world physics into account, cloaking would be time limited due to heat buildup within the cloaking field from your ships life support and other operating systems, putting an upper limit on how long a ship can remain cloaked before damage to it's systems and passengers begins to occur.

Even 'cold' rocks in the depths of space radiate heat signatures and can be detected with sensitive enough equipment so an operational starship's heat signature would stand out against the cold background of the universe like a cars headlights on a dark road at midnight.

In effect: You can't hide in space.

It doesn't work that way. The entire server isn't synchronized. Would be impossible if it is. It's only on a per-session basis.

It's actually a very accurate naval warfare simulation. Ship commanders give orders (like clicking buttons) and then ship crews carry those orders out. Ship captains don't man guns or 'take the wheel' as it were. I may be wrong, but I was led to believe that ships in EVE were supposed to be (progressively larger but in any case) crewed vessels that capsuleers 'command'. In that respect, "space fighter cockpit view"-style combat would not make sense.

To my knowledge, there are "space fighter cockpit view"-style games available if that's the experience you seek.

Then what is in your opinion? PVP combat is one of the things EVE got very right and is the main reason a HUGE amount of people play the game. If you're referring to pve combat, yes you're right it sucks Wink
