During World War 2 on Terra, in the 19th and 20th century a standard tactic to deter or eliminate piracy was to use freighter or transport vessels and equip them with hidden guns and camouflage to prevent the enemy from seeing these guns until it was too late. This system account for many submarines and surface raiders and the raiders themselves began using these ships to attack other unsuspecting merchants.

This practice could be easily added to EVE by adding a class of ships that appear on the overview as haulers and freighters, but in reality carry weapons equivalent to a size smaller class combat ship. In the case of a hauler class Q-ship the ship would have the fitting capability of a destroyer, and the freighter a Battleship of the appropriate race. Now as they are still based on haulers and freighters their ability to take damage would not be significantly improved as they are still based on an industrial ship hull.

No significant alterations to the models in eve would need to be made as the gun mounts are meant to be hidden. The Game already gives the players a means to scan a target to determine its configuration and this could be used to determine if the target were an actual hauler or a Q-Ship This design could also be applied to mining vessels to deter piracy in that area.

some ones been playing sword of the stars haven't they.

and i like the idea as i personally get these and don't look back.

in eve however a believe a few alterations should be in effect. if these Q-ships are not capable of carrying at least 75% of there predecessors volume they should indeed get a defensive buff.

as i believe Indy's are cruiser class the Q-ships should be an equivalent ship. ie if attacked it should be able to hold its own in a 1v1 scenery that the base cruiser of the races would also be able to handle

in addition the ship should have some sort of "siege" module in the effect that when its off the ship literally cant do more than the Indy its mimicing can do, in fact you could equip a mining system and pretend to mine ( you wouldn't actually mine as it would be holographic), and your ship would appear in the ship line up as " iterion V " if it was mimicking a itty 5.

then with the flip of a switch you become able to fire the guns and you know the rest.

there are already Q-ships in EVE. fit huge tank, passive targeter, neuts, web and point. drones and/or friends in reserve are recommended.

My Grandfather volunteered for duty on a real Q-Ship in WW2 Convoys, serving with honour and distinction, and vouched for their effectiveness.

I think this has idea has a great deal of potential though I also respect the other posts saying that ships can already set up with a little imagination to do the same role. That said, I think this would ultimately add game value to the industrial transport fleet as long as Q-Ships were suitably set up to favour defence vs. hauling capacity etc.

Supported.
