Edited by: Louis deGuerre on 20/12/2010 09:08:56 Well I give it a whirl yesterday and it is slightly improvement from last iteration Pro : - Beards are so much better now ! - There was actually some clothing that was not grey (shock) - Lots of other improvements (eye colouring very nice btw) Con : - Some changes seem to do little or nothing - Even with endless fiddling I suspect 99 % of all race/bloodline clones will look incredibly similar. Basically, the way it looks now I suspect we'll all look a lot more same-ish than we do now...which would be bad.
I was wondering : Will there be new avatars for every NPC in the game too ? |

Currenlty no, but it's hard to tell, since there are very few options available for everything and even less for those weird apparel the old characters had. Even clothing options that were seen years ago in the demo version don't exist in the test version, so there is really no telling how representative the test version is when it comes to the number and type of options the release version will have. |

Edited by: Joshua Deakin on 21/12/2010 08:41:24It's been a bit tough to get a decent smile out of these gals, but I think I just struck gold by almost accident. I present to you three smiling faces of a Caldari Deteis female. If I'd want to nitpick about something then the teeth could receive some glossy reflection too. But if this is the best we are going to get, I'm still a happy camper when it comes to this particular bloodline. I always wanted to be a 3D modeler, but this almost instant gratification is much easier |

I don't think that qualifies as ugly. She's remarkably unattractive elderly lady with a frown. But you can do very ugly or rather almost comedic faces that resemble more like a shaded drawing of a five year old. It's much more of a challenge to get a pleasing end result. Making ugly is as easy as pressing the randomize button. |

I find it boring and abit dissapointing. I think they should have done more out of it. Haircuts, aging, clothing, face sculpturing, coloring. It all looks the same, lacking of options. Boring |

right now they're focusing on the UI, I expect (and hope) more options will be added. Eventaully I'd like to see clothing options be something bought/made in game. |

Its not that they dont look good. But i think if this version is the one they launch, we will see alot of clones. Because theres simply not that much we can do to make them look different
Fair enough. I took some time after looking at this to look at the character creator and while you can make some very unique characters, (some so unique that I'm not sure you'd want to) it is a bit limited, to be honest. I do imagine that the options will be a bit more varied by the time it goes live, since any issues they have now should just be bad texture mappings. Any head, torso, or lower body skins they have for clothes and such should be based purely off of a cylindrical model (or whatever they are using to localize skins from a "skin" to a three dimensional model). I would be very surprised (though possibly very impressed, not necessarily disappointed, if it was even a trivial difference) after working in both visual information processing and model generation from 2.5d models, if they were using some format that any issues they had now went beyond basic cosmetic anomalies. For anything that I have worked with similar to this, the main issue is getting a good 2.5 to 3 dimensional transformation (although, as an algorithm guy primarily, I do fail to see the triviality in most designs). Once there is a good system going for the basic transformations, the issues are primarily with skinning and more of a graphical design issue than a programming issue. And since any graphical design is probably going on as a CAD file with some texturing, I don't imagine that whatever graphic designs they have (or should, but I have faith) lying around will be a major issue. And at the very least, how long would it take some (possibly) very talented graphic designers to change some clothes into a good CAD file?

I'd say the biggest reason why the characters may end up looking very similar, is that to get a pleasing end result the current restrictions will force you to sculpt towards a certain ideal. On the other hand, if CCP gives the users a lot more freedom some/many will complain that it's too hard to get a good result. I think we need an expert mode for those inclined and willing to put in the effort and time... The problem is similar to the current creator. The model looks best most of time when the sliders are in their center positions. Since there's an underlying complete model and we are only morphing that "ideal" startpoint, the morphs are usually never going to be as good as the starting point. You'd need to tweak much more intricately to get a natural result. |

Meh yes the quality is very nice but there's just a few nice haircuts; I think 95% of the population will use the same 3 or 4. And that's across all races and bloodlines; there's actually more nice looking options in the old character (that had limited options for each bloodline) creator than in the new one. There's still quite a lot of clipping and buggy features too. It's nice but not that nice. |

I have to admit (which I forgot to put in my last post) There is still a fair amount of clipping, it can be seen most noticably on the Caldari/Achura female I made, where the bottom of her hair clips through the jacket. That being said, I'm impressed with the end results and these last few bugs hopefully will be ironed out in time for release in January. Oh, I'd also like to see more variation in hair styles as well, and I still want an option for red eyes! White/blind eyes are in, why not red? |

I think when Incarna hits live sometime half a year from now the variety is going to be from the comedic to the ugly with with the good and the bad in between. For certain there are going to be players that want to just to goof around with a throwaway alt. So here's something that we are probably going to see pretty frequently. All are the same Caldari Deteis female, with the first being an end result of a bad randomizer shape, the second is one where I tried to do just a silly character. These didn't take much time if at all, but the last one I had an end result in mind and I didn't quite get where I wanted. Close, but not quite there. And to be honest, I really don't want to see the first two... And at the same time I don't want CCP art department to limit the choices we have, since that will surely produce only very generic and eventually very similar looking characters. And that's not good. |
