Some popular mmo games offer the option to signal that you are away from keyboard. Adding this would be a good thing for social interaction.

One easy to understand, and maybe even easy to implement, way to signal away from keyboard would be to replace the player picture in chats with a blank or empty space.

This would give the impression of them having left the chair in front of the intercom, quite obviously signaling that they are currently not available for communication, while still logged on.

Sorry if this is a duplicate, I did not find a way to seach the forum for a previous submissions and the first few pages didnt show anything like it I think.

This would mark you clearly as a target, and I doubt anyone would use it...nothing says 'splode me please' like an indy with an afk flag ;)

If this could be flagged in one chat window only (as in corp window) it would be useful

Yes Spider Jeru you are quite right. I like the solution from Karnai Labod, which would lead to AFK per channel, on the context menu or together with the picture and font option buttons.

Leaving the channel might be an option as well, but you cannot leave local nor corp and I guess even if you could people wouldn't like that solution.

Yep AFK per channel would be useful. A warning could indicate that public channels coul dbe dangerous setting it to this. But woul dbe useful, even to allow you to focus on one channel when away from others.

trie's idea is sound. I would say it would be more useful on the corp channel, but any indication to other players in your buddies list that you are afk would be very useful

Well, thinking of local channels this might even have a strategic side. Leave an industrial churning away "afk" in the belt, with the finger ready on the jamming trigger. And some backups ready to warp in with a well-tuned bookmark - might prove to be an effective trap.
