I'm considering getting a second account, my current main is shaping up as a generalist, and I'd like to get a good alt trained up being more focused to WH ops and PVP. My question is, with the imminent launch of Incursion do you think CCP will offer the power of two promotion again? Personally, I wonder why they don't offer it all the time. I bet many long term single account players would take advantage of it.

Didn't they offer it last month?

With the advent of a 'major' new release it's doubtful they would feel the need to boost subs with any other offer to be honest.

Yeah, I missed out on that one, they even extended it to November 14th. It's only been in the last couple days that the idea has appealed to me.

I would hope that with 6 accounts you're paying for most of them with ISK!

No, I paid for them for 12 months at a time.
Its against my eve religion to work that hard.

I would wait until Steam does a Thanksgiving or Christmas sale. You may also look into the retail package!

About three quarters of the players only have one account, give or take a few percents. So, the majority.
Of course, "no true scotsman" applies, but with "serious EVE player" instead of "true scotsman". So... yeah.

Considering the promotion barely ended... yeah, almost certainly that they'll offer it again, but not very soon.
I'd say during the summer of 2011 earliest, but you never know, maybe they'll make that late spring. Who knows...

Why would anyone buy the client twice? Funny story: I bought the retail in 03, played for a few months, got bored. Tried again in '08, got bored. Now for some reason I re-up again last month and now I'm hooked. Where would I be if I kept subbed since '03, other than alot poorer.

That's gotta be about $900-1000 RL dollars. That's at least a day or two of hard work in the real world....

Well, in his (or her) defense, 6 accounts paid with RL cash using the 1-year plan, it comes at little over 2 per day (2.15 actually).
Cigarettes are usually more expensive than that.

What, you don't make $500K+? I thought everyone on the internet made at least that, no?

Don't remind me - even the cheap crap is almost $10 CDN.

Still, who among us doesn't think it's a little crazy to drop even 600-700 RL dollars on a video game, even tho it makes more sense than alot of the stupid useless **** we buy everyday? I probably pay more than $1000 at Starbucks every year, but I don't think twice about it, nor would I be embarrassed to reveal this information. It's weird - I get much more enjoyment out of Eve than Starbucks, but if I were spending $600+ on Eve, I would keep that info on the downlow.

As well, why would anyone actually need 6 accounts? I often struggle to find something to do with my one alt account (tho it does come in awfully handy at times).

Believe it or not! I'm in the same boat actually. Considering a second account simply so I can see what EVE is like from the perspective of an industralist/mining character. Cool

I can give you some idea of what a mining character is like.

Being dead (IRL) is more exciting and you can make more profit as well.

How do you measure this, does CCP check IP adresses or mac adresses?

Hrmmmm 3 out of 4 players that I chat with regularly on Eve have at least 2 accounts, more often though, they have 3 or more.

Exactly - that's why I'm wondering.

My closest friends in EVE have 2 and 4 accounts, I have 2. The CEO has 2, there's one with a 4 or 5 character mining fleet in my corp, also a few with just 1 account. But on average most people I know have 2, it's definitely not just 25% who have more than one. Usually new players only have one, but players that play longer than (half) a year have more.

to the OP,
no as they have just finished one - It will be like 6 or 7 months before the next power of two,
however there are other options,
send yourself a buddy invite and activate it via plex then you get 51days and 30days extra on your main,
or get the Commissioned officer edition and activate hat for the booster to give you +3 boosted for 35 days - not sure if you can get the booster if you use that to extend a trail account

CCP people already admitted in the not-so-recent past that they _DO_ log not just IP addresses but also Windows product IDs (hashed only, AFAIK) amongst other things they didn't specify (other than the fact they do log a few other things too), so theoretically they could tell if you logged in from another machine any other player used in the past to login from (before a Windows reinstall, or a reinstall with the same kit). Of course, if your Windows is not genuine, that could cause some other issues as far as logging goes. And so on and so forth.
Anyway, OBVIOUSLY all you get is a best estimate, but it's far, FAR more accurate than anecdotal evidence of "people I know all have more than two accounts", because you are using a heavily biased sample, whereas CCP has much more of a chance to get closer to the actual picture.

And the average (or median?) account age is somewhere around 9 months, so statistically speaking, the people you hang out with being far more heavily in the "older" demographic ALREADY constitute a minority.
That's where the "no true scotsman" part comes in, you mostly ignore huge portions of the player base (newer players for one, casual players for other) since you seldom have contact with them. Your viewpoint is heavily biased from the start, and reject the idea they could even be a significant demographic, when they obviously are.

I honestly don't know how I would survive with only 1 account. At one time I thought it was crazy to have more than one account, and then I tried it. Just an alt mining pilot. Two accounts made me happy. My son soon came into the world, so I needed to create a character named after him, account #3 is born. I needed to create an uber hauler toon, and things worked out with Power of 2, I created account #4. So after a while of jumping my uber hauler character in and out of 0.0, I said screw it, I need an empire hauler. So account #5 was created. I always had a thing against odd numbers. They aren't as neat, as clean, as sophisticated, kind of like the Minmatar, so #6 is my newest.

Yep, EVE is very much and addiction. People with multiple accounts need variety maybe. Who knows? Maybe we just have a sick obsession for control. Either way, when I get the first email about my first account being drawn out of my bank, I know that 5 more are soon to follow. I think, well, maybe itís time to knock it down to 4 or 5 accounts. But how would I get by? I need to stop, 6 is enough.....but 7 is my lucky number...but its and odd number, I hate odd numbers........oh crap......I hope power of 2 comes back soon....

I did have two accounts but have gone back down to 1, mainly to ensure I have a more social game with friends by all having a role to play, and ensuring I can't 'hardcore' eve (the major cause of several near year long burn outs).

You NEED two accounts to get stuff done if you're unwilling to wait or don;t have irl mates to rely on, but I feel you get a much more social game with a single account and some good friends.

I been playing for three years now with one account. It's a jack-of-all-trades, which I suppose comes naturally with a single character. Now my Corp is moving into Wormholes I decided it would be handy to have an empire-space hauler that can resupply my main character and earn a bit of extra ISK by running missions/mining/PI when the Wormhole starts to slow up with scan sites.

Most of my Corp has alts and at first I just didn't see any real need. Now I have an alt of my own, I couldn't be without it. Mining is obviously a lot easier, RR is extremely handy and as a scout the alt is priceless.

I suppose it's like owning a car. You can get by without one easily if you never had one to begin with. But once you've had one, you can never again be without it! I'm even debating with myself to start up a third alt! Hmmm, it can be a deadly trap as addiction pulls me into the game more and more each day! Very Happy But then if you treat this game as a hobby, it makes it easier to justify Wink
