The following is the tale of a terrible pilot's experience in an even worse ship.
Somewhat long story and not significant in the slightest but considering the kind of stuff posted here sometimes, it can't be all that bad. I might continue depending on the general response (if people think it's stupid I'll let it die)

Fast forward to the story if you'd like, the below is just some context behind it.

<<
I'm going to start this by saying right off the bat that I'm a terrible, terrible pilot. Honestly, I've lost more ships than I can remember, but I knew that's how things were going to pan out when I set off on my career as a lowsec dwelling pirate and I'm not easily discouraged. After enduring a few months of loss after loss I started to win a few engagements now and again and gradually got better and better as time went on (relatively of course, I was still terrible). I had fun though, and that's all that mattered. Though I enjoyed EVE losses and all, a few months ago I took a short break while I adjusted myself to campus life.

Tales of the Battle Atron: Part 1 (?)

Fast forward to present day.

I return to EVE eager to resume my space yarring only to find that I've forgotten many of the lessons I learned during my early days of pirating. I lost a bunch of ships in some pretty fair fights (well as fair as they get in EVE anyway) with 0 wins. Perhaps it was an unlucky streak of losses on my part, but after losing an interceptor in a fairly embarrassing fight I decided it might be a good idea to go back to t1 frigate hulls while I relearned how to play.

Now I'm completely fine with that, t1 frigates are great fun. Now I've never been a fan of the Rifter, just because I don't really like the aesthetics of minmatar ships (I know, I know, terrible reason not to fly a ship). So I'm contemplating what kind of ship I'm going to buy when I notice some random Atron hull sitting in my hangar. I board it and find that it was fitted with a MWD and some salvagers. It had been a throwaway salvage ship I used back before I took my break to run around Amamake salvaging Elite ship wrecks left behind by more competent pvpers than I (guys gotta make cash somehow). There had been something left behind in the cargo hold, too. I opened it up and lo' and behold an Intact Armor Plate. Checked market prices and they were selling for around 30mil. I sell it and use a small portion of it to buy some modules.

Rewind back a few months.

So I'm searching the market shopping around for a t1 frigate to go yarring in. At the time I had been experimenting with different ship hulls, trying to see which one I like best. I had flown Punishers, Incursuses, Tristans, and Kestrels and for whatever reason I stopped when I reached the Atron.

"No." I think "It would never work in a million years."

Eventually I succumb to my own curiosity and buy the frigate for what amounted to less than pocket change.

I spent the next few minutes toying around with various fits, mostly for the lols but also to see what kind of stats I'd be able to get on it.

Before I realized what I was doing it was all fitted out.

Perhaps I was bored. Perhaps I was crazy. Probably some combination of both. Regardless, that night I set off into the harsh space of Egghelende in my Battle Atron eager to fight and with no delusions that my Atron would survive to make it back to station.

Battlecruisers come and go. I scan for smaller frigates. After an hour of close calls with the directional scanner I have nothing to show for it. And then suddenly a Punisher appears on scan. I quickly isolate the frigates' location and initiate warp immediately. Heart thumping the entire way, and fearful that he may have warped off already, I land about 30km off my target. I hastily activate my afterburner and my Atron quickly reaches its top speed of 1.2 km/s. The Punisher starts burning in my direction as well...

...I hit my warp disruptor and then hit my orbit button and my Atron immediately pulls into its 17km orbit around the target.

*PANG!*

*ZAPP!*

My 150mm Railgun II's scream with every cycle. The Punishers' shields diminish with every volley, while his lasers miss their mark and fire fruitlessly into the void. After stabilizing my orbit I find time to release my Hobgoblin II and it beelines strait for the enemy vessel.

Moments that seems like hours pass, as my Atron dishes out it's pitiful 43 dps. At one point I even have to reload my weapons.

It's a good thing that the Punisher was so slow, because the adrenaline kept pumping through my veins to the point where I was a helpless shaking moron who happened to be behind the wheels of an automated cherrytapping machine.

Moments passed, and I realized that the Punisher was now shooting at my drone (which just so happened to be a significant portion of my dps). I try recalling it, too late. It dies undramatically at the wrong end of a laser, but the time for mourning would come later. The Punisher was at 50% armor and I wasn't about to back out when I had it right where I wanted it.

Seconds pass. The adrenaline rush begins to die down as the outcome of the fight becomes more certain.

Victory.

The Punisher is engulfed in that flash of bright blue that I never get tired of seeing.

It takes a moment before it hits me that I had just won. In an Atron.

I scoop the loot and head back to station, content with the day's victory.

For some time after that fateful battle I continued to fly the Atron, to the bemusement of other pirates and to the disbelief of my victims. Even got my first ransom off a Primae (in hindsight the killmail would have been better than the money I got from it).

Many losses were had, sure, but the Atron is easily replaceable and I derived much enjoyment from getting kills in this most unlikely of ships.

Fast Forward again to present day.

Hoping to relive some of the awesome times that were had in the Atron, I refitted the old salvaging ship and rechristened the vessel to the 'HMS MANLINESS'. Guns mounted and hopes high I set off once more into the hostile space
of Egghelende...

I once killed a Taranis in an tech 1 fitted Atron. The rage was pretty amazing tbh. Nice read +1

Edit: The taranis pilot was terrible. He was using void and didn't have a web, and I was AB fitted.

Nice read, carry on.

Question though. It seems to me that Gallente/Minmatar ships are preferred when going into PvP. Is this true? I read somewhere that Caldari ships are the worst. I'm Amarr and I've trained up some good Gunnery skills; most laser skills at Level 4 and 5.

I was thinking about starting my PvP career in Punishers and Mallers, then moving up. So could a Maller pilot with mad skills do well in PvP? Other support skills are good too at Levels 4 and 5 (Engineering, etc.).

I'm not exactly an expert but as far as solo t1 frigate pvp goes it tends to be mostly Rifters with the occasional Incursus or Punisher thrown in in my experience. The Kestrel is a fun ship to fly as far as Caldari goes and I've made a few kills with it before, I flew it the same way that I flew my Atron for the most part (orbit at long range and pelt from there) except I found it was much harder to dictate range on it. Would definitely be better when used in a gang I think. Tip though if you want to fly the Punisher - train up projectile weapons, you'll be glad you did.

I can't really comment on cruisers because I don't fly them much, but I'm of the opinion that you could make most anything 'work' to some extent (if the Battle Atron is any indication).
I'm sure a more experienced pvper can interject with some advice (and to correct me on any faulty information)

Also, I'm happy that everyone seems to like it. I'll post more here as soon as something worth writing about happens. Smile
