Can you legit sue someone for something they did on EVE Online?

Like, I'm serious. This guy wants to take me to court over harassment. I mean, wow:

"Pusssssss-y"
"Lets fight, B***H"
etc.

Super cool tears bro. Not threadworthy though tbh. I've had people threaten to **** and kill my family + pets, so a lawsuit would be a nice change imo.

It depends on how do you define harassment. It might be possible in some extreme cases.

I'm not a lawyer, but as nothing in EVE belongs to you, i'd say only CCP can sue anyone for something they did in EVE.

On the other side you can try sue CCP for not protecting you enough from harassment, sure, but good luck here, because i'd say most judges won't bother with cases that start with:
'He smacked me in local with nasty words and looted from my ore and the GM don't ban him. Can i has his stuff? KThxbai'

Just make sure you never ever give away any information to other players that might identify you as a person in real life, even to 'trusted' in-game friends, because there's precedents of nut cases trying to harm each other over mmo-related issues.

In doubt, petition.

This is one of the great things about EVE Online - no lawyers. And should anyone pretend to be a lawyer, you can shoot them with no ramifications. =D

AFAIK legal agencies in RL dont recognise online communications ( in a game or otherwise ) as being a way to step around the law.

Whether or not he has a case depends on what you have been saying and whether juristriction can be obtained.

e.g.
If your in the US and the person you have alledgedley abused is also in the US and you have made disparaging remarks against his RL character or been racial abusive or incited violence then you could well be looking at a visit to a correctional instituation in the near future.

b.t.w.

Can I have your stuffz, I dont think you will be needing it for a while.

Possibly.

If the individual said something like "I'm going to rip off your arm and stick it in your ass. To that end I'm now going to my car, fill it up at the next filling station and then drive to your place. First, I'll gut your dog and eat its heart. Then I go to your wife's bedroom and **** her, forcing you to watch it. Right after this I'll pull out my hunting knife and slit your throat - wait, I have to give way here - Then comes the arm ripping part that you'll not have the opportunity to see. It's not a threat. It's a promise. I'm dead serious and comitted. See you in a few hours my friend."

In such cases you should probably be on guard and alert authorities. Anything substantially less than that will probably be laughed at in court.

anyone who takes things in a video game seriously enough to commit bodily harm against another human being, doesn't need to be playing games in the first place.

This guy wouldn't have much of an argument as long as the action were only in game and within the boundries of gameplay mechanics. He chose to play a game where player vs player activities can be forced upon you at any time against you will and that dynamic is the core mechanic of the game. To ***** about it is like crying foul if your car gets dented in a demolition derby because it's mean if anyone hits your car.

Still people will always whine about things they think should apply to everyone else but not themselves. So, meh.
