I'm soon going to begin training for T2 Sentries or Heavies but can't decide which to start first. I mostly fight Angel Cartel so I was thinking of going with T2 Heavies first.

Any help would be appreciated.

I never use them. Do you use heavy drones a lot?

Heavy drones take ages to get to targets so they suck at PvE, especially if the different battleship spawns are far apart.

heavies are painfully slow. If you have half decent skills your your high slot weapons...they will kill spread apart targets faster than you waiting for the drones to get there.

ONly ships they are even close to be useful on are the pirates ships (gila and rattlesnake) where they get some nice damage bonuses imo. But so damn slow you'll still hate them even if you give them 40-50% bonuses depending on ship skill 4 or 5. tried them on gila...some rooms if spaced right with bare minimum missile skills httting the target they got on target for structure (which collaspses easy on most ships easy anyway :( ). thankfully just had basic skills since just trying them out.

Imo use t2 light and medium drones and train heavy drones and sentries to 4 and use faction drones (navy etc). Faction drones have a little less damage than T2 but have better tracking/optimal plus double shield and armor hitpoints - just awesome for heavies and sentries.

Erm. Have you used T2s? Not only are they a huge (for sentries) or at least large (for heavies) step up, they are cheap enough to be almost expendable.

My advice? T2 sentries for gank. T2 heavies should be trained eventually but in PvE are mainly useful in an AFK setup. But if you really do want to go for the AFK Domi, get the heavies to T2. And soon.

Thank you everyone for the replies,
I don't AFK mission I run L4's with a friend in a maelstrom so I suppose I will begin training for T2 Sentries. One more question if you wouldn't mind answering. If I use sentries should I fit Omnidirectional Tracking Links, and if so how many?

Thanks

I would say 2 for maximum benefit, 3 doesn't do noticeably better then 2 (in eve ship fit tool).

With those two on, and if the enemy is not right under you, you can instapop frigs and quickly get cruisers.

I use sentry domi for L4s. Two omnidirectionals + drone links augmentor + two sentry damage rigs and your sentries will outdamage heavies.

I only use heavies when target BS comes within 15 km range and your sentries get tracking issues, but in this case you will need a drone speed mod (or two).

So, imo sentries first, than heavies.

Since he's mainly fighting Angels, I'd like to leave this tidbit:

Zerk IIs really aren't all that bad in missions against Angels, especially if you run an AC ship. They're pretty fast for heavies, and Angels like to rush up close and congregate around you. If you're handling frigs and cruisers with your turrets, they're pretty good at helping you mulch your larger targets.

A little common sense on target selection can keep you from losing a significant amount of DPS through travel time.

This is very true. Not only do Angels (and Mercs using Angels vessels) like to get in close, they also tend to fly close together. This is the ideal PvE environ (apart from AFK) to use heavies. Unfortunately it doesn't occur often with any of the other pirate factions you might face.

Another point:
T2 Heavies need their respective Racial Drone skill at lvl4 also. and both are rank 5 skills. And there are ofc 4 racial drone specialization skills..

Sentries don't benefit form the specialization skill at all. So it's quicker to train to maximum damage potential. Plus there's the rather marvellous Sentry Damage Rig Cool

Overall you will find T2 sentries way way more efficient in missions, with a few exceptions. And 3 ODL's does in fact give you added optimal range which especially with Garde II's (which I always carry on any mission) is invaluable. Their superior tracking and damage multiplier means they'll kill any racial BS as close as 5km in a very short time.

Also make sure you train EW Drone Operation to at least level 4. DLA's take a lot of CPU so if you can fit one less, so much the better - especially on the Ishtar which you probably have somewhere in your skill plan :)

First off, thanks for the replies everyone.

I left out in my first post that I am running L4's with a another corp member in a Maelstrom and I am in a Domi so no AC for me. I might start training for Berserker IIs as these Angels like to come up close so travel time may not be that huge of an issue.

Last question, would Garde's be the best here if I am fighting Angels mostly, or Warden's to get rid of frigates further away?

Thanks

if you're up against angels, Bouncers/Gardes/xxxxxx

I havn't tried heavies, but hammerheads take their frigates fast enough.

Slow vs their HACS though. hoping heavies can drop hacs faster.
