There are very few valid reasons for taking a standard freighter into lowsec:
  • You need to move something to 0.0 that's too big to be hauled any other way and cannot be built anywhere near the destination. This used to be true for CSAAs and infrastructure upgrades before PI came out, but unless you're moving into an area with no nearby outposts, it's generally easier to build them on site.
  • You're deploying an outpost egg or similar structure that someone's already built in empire space
  • You are supported by several bridging titans and/or a jump bridge network, and can't be be bothered to use JFs

this and alot of the other positive advice, my advice is ask yourself do you really need your freighter for this job a blockade runner can slip in and out of lowsec and 0.0 space with little or no problems, if youcan fly a blockade runner get yourself one asap and use that, only 2 dangers are undocking from stations and any large dedicated gatecamps

The planets are richer in lowsec, you get more for PI materials in high-sec, a freighter is cheep, a successfull haul can pay for several, scout, if you can fly in non eve prime time you have the chance of making some isk as a new player. Risk free its not, but the best way to learn how lowsec operates is to actually go to lowsec.

Unless you have a jump freighter dont even bother, any ship that can tank the sentries will make mincemeat out of you.

Train your jump skills and upgrade to a jumpfreighter.

It doesn't take THAT long to do post training a conventional freighter to do so, and some trading in Empire with the regular freighter will make you the ISK to buy one by the time you are ready. Jumpfreighters have but one purpose: bypass lowsec gate camps, as you can cyno directly out of highsec back to 0.0. Your point of risk is of course hitting that lowsec system but if the grid is clear and you cyno onto a station it's not that high.

Conventional freighters absolutely require an escort anywhere except in highsec or it's going to be a dead freighter. About the only exception to this is if you use titan bridges to move them.

Technically, freighters can be almost perfectly safe in lowsec if you're not in a hurry. As soon as you jump through a gate, if there is anything that can tackle you there, log off under gatecloak. It'll take five or so gank bses to have the dps to pop you in the thirty seconds before you disappear, and it's pretty easy to avoid those by staying away from major lowsec pipes and checking the map for population. Scouting with an alt before logging back on is good, or scan whilst in your e-warp back to the log off spot and log again mid-warp if anyone is waiting to pull another 30 second disappearing act.

Using a scout is obviously a better solution but I like to highlight the near invulnerability of unscouted freighters so something will get done about it.

Hello there,
this helped me understand, still I lost a my Piñata one day :(

Freighter escort guide

Well, don't forget to insure the big candy. Low sec is a harsh place.

The word Piñata comes to mind. Does that work for an answer?

You're flying a candy dispenser through an elementary school filled with troubled youth and hoping they leave you alone. Get someone to fly point and see that the little sh... err, "trouble youths" aren't in the halls you're passing through or you probably won't make it.

LOL

That pretty much sums it up.

I once set my freighter alt's autopilot to an island system, surrounded entirely by low-sec.

After I safely docked I tried to find a route back and my sleep deprived brain didn't make the connection for five minutes, when I realized that I'd accidentally afk-autopiloted a solo Obelisk through 4 low-sec systems.

Oops.

I say dont be a ***** and just do it. No single person will be able to kill you before you get back to gate even if they do have a titan..

That's correct, but if his destination is a few jumps further into low sec...

It's not the single one you worry about, it's his 12 buddies that will show up when he starts yelling in Vent.

You fail, lol

'Favor' is the version of choice for lazy Americans, whereas 'Favour' is the British spelling, and therefore the correct one lol

Prior to Titan Jump Bridges and Jump Freighters, I REGULARLY ran freighters to Delve, and even into Fountain (there are STILL 1600+ shuttles in the 7BX station from a supply run I did about 3 years ago, not to mention 100s in several stations in Delve that were still there when I came back from my break.....)

Prior to Freighters, I was running expanded Itty5s.

I still have 10 shares of ISS stock from helping them haul cargo for their first player built outpost.

Rule one: If you are not willing to scout your route ahead of time in a fast ship, making multiple Bookmarks in each system (and NOT just between gates), then don't bother going low sec or 0.0.

Rule Two: They are waiting to kill you. Be paranoid.

Rule Three: Be PATIENT (or die)

As said above, an IN CORP webbing alt is wise HOWEVER, if you get webbed, EVEN BY AN IN CORP ALT, you are on an Aggro timer. Logging off in space is suddenly a BAD idea.

Combat fitted escorts should NOT be fitted to win a battle. They should be fitted to get the Freighter out of harms way (possible to do both, but even when planning escort types and fitting them, REMEMBER THE MAIN MISSION.)

Jump Freighters may seem like the safe alternative, but not so much when all of a sudden you see a supercap deploying its fighter bombers at your so-called "deathstar" POS... YARRRR!!

When moving a freighter through low/null with valuables inside, just bring four or five cheapo blackbirds crammed with ewar. Idea is to jam up enough attackers to make it to the next gate. It's not an expensive security measure, it'll stop small and medium-sized ambushes, and if you're ambushed by a big force you're dead no matter what.

Yes, a freighter needs an escort into lowsec, and a titan bridge from there.

I accidentally flew my Charon into a 0.4 system once. My biggest fear was not getting scramed, but getting webbed or bumped. It took me forever to get back to the gate; I should have warped to a planet and back. One person in a cruiser tried to attack and bump me, but he didn't know how to bump right and left.

Judging by what I see almost everyday in Heimatar Low-sec, freighters are too damn safe !!!

Fix your batphone then, a freighter moves slow as hell, and if you find him three jumps out of his destination you've got plenty of time to hotdrop it.

This is my first freighter and I wasn't sure how well it would stand to attack considering there no open slots for modules and it's as slow as molasses. So I was curious, and yes the question was sincere.
Log into Singularity and just about anyone there might be willing to give you a demonstration, especially if you're near Orvolle so people don't have to jump far to get to you to give that demonstration.

You, err, made 4 jumps in a freighter in five minutes on autopilot?

I call complete and total shenanigans.
