I've got the scratching post picked out, the litter box, lots of toys, but I have no clue on the cat. I just can't seem to decide. I think I want one with short hair. I have decided to adopt but that's about as far as I know. Definetly a young cat that is spunky. I don't want one that thinks I am his/her pet. lol So I'm looking for a bit of help to narrow down my search as I know nothing of breeds and all. |

Each cat certainly has their own, growing personality.. but breeds do certainly seem to have a norm guideline they tend to 'lean' on.
Orange tabs - bout 95% are male. Chill cats.. can be playful without being fierce. Not really aggressive, at all towards anything. More playful than hurtful, even with bugs and prey. I give'em 9 outta 10 paws.
Siamese - All different types of siamese, all of them general very talkative and hilarious. Especially ones closer to pure-breed, as they have the shimmering blue Cross-eyes. I have a flame-point siamese, makes all types of funny, strange, amusing noises and talks back if spoken to. Territorial.. aggressively playful. Bit more of a handful than the orange tabs tho, thats for sure. Cause of that, 8 outta 10.
Russian Blues - Come in short and long hair. Blue, green, yellow and the very cool lookin' orange eyes. Much like the Orange tabs, with a chill.. laid back approach. Gentle giants. They get pretty tall on average compared to other breeds. Don't comb them, ruins the blue'ish silvery hue to the coat. Very cuddly bunch, they don't mind relaxing in your lap and next to you as you sleep.. nor being alone a top a bookcase taking a nap, or surveying the scene. 8 outta 10.
Maine Coon - I compare them to something inbetween russian and orange tab in their demeanor, with a twist. Very independant breed of cat. Will follow you around, but only to let you think your the boss.. no, they are da Boss. From my experince, quite a few Maine Coons I've come across have a Weird fixation with water. Might learn and proceed to flush your toilet quite often to watch the water. Playtime held in bath tubs and sinks. Entertaining bunch, when they are in the mood.. and if they aren't, they don't give a **** if you care or not. 9 outta 10.
Calico - 95% female. I don't like calicos. Mean ****ers that hate me and go for my throat like tuna. 1 outta 10.
Sphinx - Weird looking. No hair to clean up, but got to bathe them to keep them clean and lower risk of infections. Expect torn up hands.. or just use baby wipes. Freak friends out. Very cool personalities tho. Ex had two.. very playful. One would play fetch on a regular basis. Talkative but not overly. 8 outta 10.
Torties - 95% female. A lot like Russian Blues, but tend to be more talkative. Can have crazy cool, unique color schemes going on. I think the Smoke Torties are bad ass looking, if you can find one.. good luck. Like Russians.. 8 outta 10.
Himalyians - If you want a regal cat, ta-da. Long hair tho, really long and takes a lot of care. Their personality, in my experince.. mirrors that of the Maine Coons mostly. But each one seems to have a personality extreme, either very talkative.. or very shy. 8 outta 10.
I don't know.. any other breed just ask. This is just an overall norm guideline for breeds. Cats really do have their own personality that could be completely different than what I said here.. maybe you'll find a lovey, chill short hair'd calico that'll let you be the boss (I ****ing doubt it). It's possible.
Don't walk into a shelter or rescue and go by looks alone.. spend time with the cat, give the cat time to open up before deciding.

IME, male cats, even when neutered, may spray. Females are pretty fastidious and clean, but are very territorial towards other/new cats.
Is this going to be an indoor or outdoor cat? If indoor, then I would recommend a female (to avoid the potential spraying problem) and maybe lean towards short haired cats.

Edited by: Brujo Loco on 29/08/2010 06:27:34Talking in a Cat thread ... lol You know guys, when I went to Istanbul, there were these cat herds, for lack of a better word, all around Topkapi Palace, specially the gardens near the entrance. These cats were extremely nice, so docile, that they simply walked up to people, and lay themselves down in the grass with their bellies up so they could be touched. First time ever I have seen a cat do that. Here are some PICS.My experiences with cats in latinamerica has been reduced to either them seeing me and fleeing or them freezing up and stare at me to see if I was about to eat them then fleeing. Never been a cat persons, but these cats were so radically diff it shocked me a bit. You guys know what race are these cats? Even in the great bazaar they simply walked around unmolested. Lots of cultural respect for them in the streets for what I saw, might be wrong, but thats what I saw in my brief stay there. That or cats in latinamerica are just treated as vermin and I'm the biased one to see people not molesting them. If I ever decide to have a pet it would be cats like these, specially the all black one with white paws. |

@Brugo - The two black n whites are called Tuxedo Cats, or bicolor. The one with tabby n calico markings is normally referred to as a Patch Tabby. I have a patch tab, very.. very.. very vocal lil monster. Extremely affectionate thing. Tuxedo cats I've found to be friendly, spunky, playful lot.
@Akita - I didn't bring up Scot Folds or Folds in general, nor Persians.. cause I figured someone else would eventually and my experince with both breeds is quite limited. Don't see many of them, at all.. ever.. in shelter n rescue envirnoments. Folds are cool tho, I don't really care much for Persians personally tho.
As far as spraying goes.. even alpha females can spray. Also when they are in heat, their sense of smell is whacked out a bit.. and they'll **** anywhere they smell such hmm.. lets just say, if you fart a lot on a couch, chair, bed.. thats where they'll go. Male spraying can best be avoided by getting male thats been neut'd before they desire to hump, before 5-6ish months old. Stopping a female from going pee crazy, spayed. Whatever gender, get'em fixed! There is tooooo many and not enough homes as it is. |

Yeah, but that doesn't smell bad like territorial marking does In fact, it's not even noticeable by a regular person. |

And if you get a male cat, you better expect to get humped while the cat is giving you a really dirty look... I mean, you are his ***** so why wouldn't he? Not kidding, I wish I was though. |

PRAISE THE SCOTTISH FOLD!!
On a more serious note Scottish Fold are great cats with a very sweet and loving disposition. Some are vocal and some aren't so its a coin flip there. Not to mention their appearance make you want to hug/hold them all the time. Only issue with Scottish Folds is some of the health issues associated with their genetics and the enormous price breeders charge for them (good luck finding one in a shelter).
I'll also toss in the recommendation to check out Bombay cats. Great personalities, gentle, playful, and they are lap fungus--they will be everywhere you are (and trying to help you with whatever you are doing). Come to think of it this breed is very dog-like in many ways. Oh and they look like miniature panthers. They are still pricey from breeders but a somewhat easier to find in a shelter. (I adopted mine from a shelter.)

If you like vocal cats that are also strong and very given to affections I would have to recommend a Norwegian Forest Cat. They are similar to Main Coons and I believe the they are considered, in some circles, the ancestors of the Main Coon. Me and my wife have a Crossed Norwegian Forest Cat and a Common European, female and male respectively. The Common European is very independent while our Norwegian Forest is highly dependent on our affection and she always is where we are. Like the Main Coons they can have a weird fascination for water. Open a faucet and they can stare at it for hours . Word of advice though, Norwegian Forest Cats are expert climbers and as such they love to be in high places, they have very strong back paws they use to leap very high and also to get down from high places. When we first got her 2 year ago, we had very little knowledge of that particular race. 2 years later it is the only race we whant. |

Why are you eating cat food instead of normal food? Cat food is healthy for a cat, but it isn't formulated to keep humans healthy and the manufacturing process and incredients aren't the same that are used in human food. |

Edited by: Aidan Trintignant on 04/09/2010 00:35:08Still trying to find out if mines a Russian Blue pure smoke or a British Short hair Pure smoke. I got him as a rescue two years ago and he's just amazingly cool. Fine to be by himself but anytime anyone new comes over he wants to meet em. In the two years ,hehe he's been living here, I've never once seen him hiss or get mad. To the cat experts out there, all of his fur is white for half the length then turns black, so he appears black until he starts moving or you ruffle his fur. Its not a dual coat, each hair is half and half. Any help figuring out what he is would awesome. To the OP either of these breeds are great friendly cats, love sleeping on the bed with ya, like meeting new people and other animals, and pretty much tend to take care of themselves. -edit- this guy WHT is he? |
