'North Korea's military will deal a "merciless counterblow" to the U.S. and South Korea, "the severest punishment no one has ever met in the world," it said.'

Apparently N. Korea's ****ed that the South is preparing to re-unite and south and the US are doing war games along its border...

That threat sounds fairly intimidating. We're all used to hearing them say **** but that's fairly harsh compared to previous threats.

I mean we've done some pretty ****ed up counterblows in the past... If they really are going to, kinda makes me think bio.

if we make a grab for BestGloriousA#1 Korea, we'll do it after kim be illin dies.

as is common knowledge, korea's only real and significant threat to the outside world is the metric ****ton of artillery it has trained on seoul

if we were smart (and we aren't. but we are smart enough to one up N Korea :P) we would have every piece of artillery they have pinpointed to be obliterated asap in the case of an incident.

we take that advantage away... all they have left is die hards in the woods. which as 'nam taught us, can be significant. but if played right, i think many MANY people in the north would love to shuffle off their governments coil.

wouldn't be pretty. stuff like that never is. and i hate to make pro war comments because it's never as simple as it sounds but.... in the long run it would probably be for the best.
would definitely make millions upon millions of people much much happier

North Korea leaders are power hungry freaks, afraid of losing what they have.
Best thing that can happen to N.Korea is a war, lose it, and have all those small men gone.

Amazing how that country, dying of starvation and all, poses a threat to world peace every single year.

Well until we can invent a Nuke or Satellite that can hit a whole country but only vaporize the power hungry *******s at the top and leave the civilians alone, we are kind of stuck with the current NK leadership.

Other problem with that kind of weapon is then the satellite would lock onto the corporate goons that run this country(US) and vaporize them and then how would senators get their bribery money(err typo that was ment to be donations).

Perhaps, as the resulting hot war between China and the US would leave the world free of your crappy neo-colonialism and daytime television.

China is quietly happy for North Korea to make waves as it is with Iran. Not that I think China is overtly a troublemaking country as such. More that China won't take the lead from white folk in the USA like USA won't take a lead from Chinese folk Confused
And a reunited South and North Korea that is allied to USA is a bigger problem for China. I hope once the leader of North Korea dies that there is a new dynamic towards reunification.

Yeah, cause social unrest in their own country as the people can no longer afford that one portion of rice they have to share with their entire family for a month.

What leaders of countries say on foreign policy is mostly stuff to satisfy their own electorate. But what happens behind the scenes is often something else with a lot of hardball economic political horse trading.

He's threatening Everybody, Even his close neighbor China is not 100% thrilled with his antics. NK is ****ing in everybody's pools when they can.

The problem is while they can be a threat, they are like that kid screaming for attention. you have to keep them just enough in check they don't break the glassware but ignore them enough they don't get the attention they desire.

IMO other than Civilian deaths on both sides, another reason war with NK is bad is it gives them too much attention. I think some of their "Power" comes from media **** waving. i bet their leadership just loves their antics showing up on CNN and the BBC.

NK acts up to get people (US, China, SK) to send them food and fuel.

If the NK people had access to the international media, then I could see NK as doing some outlandish stunts to get favorable press back home (i.e. look at how CNN and the BBC state that the rest of the world is afraid of and hates NK!) Or they would need to crack down even more against their citizens.

But they're mainly doing it for food and fuel donations.

Humanity in general excels at War. not a good trait but a trait none the less. No many other species have found ways to weaponize just about anything. Heck i bet CDRoms could be weaponized if someone where given some time and the correct spare parts sitting around.

Bah I wish the US invaded Venezuela ... you know, the country that gives Iran uranium alongside Bolivia (puppet state of Venezuela). Venezuela is evil, its President Chavez openly supports Iran, has signed mutual defense treaties, and also openly declares his love to Fidel Castro.

So yeah, even Nkorea is buddy of Chavez ... as seen HERE. Who knows, perhaps some of the artillery shells aimed at Seoul were made in Venezuela.

Bah!

indeed, thats pretty much everyone who has a clue's thoughts
not much can be done though
1. its too costly to invade, even the rich countries are poor nowadays
2. many north koreans are inbred with delusions (excuse my poor english) etc.
while it probably wont be a high percentage of the population it still leaves a huge army ready to die for nothing
3. south korea is never going to risk seoul
4. the world is fighting elsewhere
5. people have "bad" experience with invasions, even though they don't fully comprehend the conditions in north korea, even i dont think its a good idea to invade

fun fact: its a country with horses, carts, farms real people, and government drug/weapon factories

while theres a chance the military would just lay down arms
reality dictates that nothing is going to happen in north korea for the foreseeable future

edit: although im pretty interested in learning about what certain companies have in store for the upper echelons in north korea
it could be that simply taking the leadership out of the picture, negotiating with the military and then holding elections could be viable
but whos not to say the military head (or some other officer) just decides to step up and rule with the same ironfist

looool

the only reason china has for not wanting n korea to get attacked is they don't want countless starving north koreans fleeing into their country

and if they had to pick or choose, they would gladly see n. korea in different hands. in case you didn't notice, china makes way too much money off of the US and other first world countries to be interested in fighting a war with us.

f'in post cold-war global economics and politics. how do they work?

There is a fundamental flaw with your plan 'pinpoint every piece of artillery they have...' They are believed to have around 13,000 pieces of artillery scattered near the border. Also, most of the artillery is mobile. It would take a small percentage of the artillery to remain standing to deal devastating damage to Seoul. The moment a move is taken against them they would unleash holy hell upon South Korea and the rest of the world would condemn the 'instigators' of North Korea.

Next, you are ignoring the possibility of North Korea possessing nuclear weapons. Some sources claim them to potentially have material to construct 9 nukes.

Finally, your comment on 'die hards in the woods...' seems to completely disregard the fact that they have one of the largest standing armies in the world (larger than China!). 1.2 million active personnel and 9.7 reserved/retired personnel. You may think that 'MANY people in the north would love to shuffle off their government...' however I don't think you realize that they have been force-fed propaganda their entire lives. A great majority of North Koreans love their government and will fiercely fight to protect it. Given that 50% of the population is either active, reserve, or retired military, invading North Korea would be extremely difficult (think: trying to invade Texas!)

In closing: I agree, it wouldn't be pretty. This would not be a cakewalk like Iraq was. We are talking REAL resistance, REAL consequences, REAL WMDs!!!! Shock n'Awe would be North Korea's gameplan/slogan. I doubt it would make people happier though...
