Sorry, possibly stupid question that may have already been asked and answered elsewhere; my google-fu isn't as strong as it might be:

I know that the servers are offline to get the serverside patch. That's cool; I understand this. I'm not asking why I can't login. Please don't pull the usual CCP stunt and answer a question I didn't ask.

Question begins thusly: Is there some reason why I cannot download and install the client side patch and be ready to roll the instant the server has finished patching?

Before you pull:

I would advise all players to wait until we announce that the patch is final and ready to be installed. In the past players have had issues with having to reinstall a full client by using an invalid patch.

You cannot seriously expect us to believe that you'd roll out a serverside patch while you have any reservations whatsoever about the client patch.

If you are and do, can I suggest professional management help? They can (at criminal hourly rates) give you a nice chart showing what's likely to happen to your revenue base when those (otherwise damned fine) CCP bugfixing workhorses "soonTM" and "when it's doneTM" are applied to the ability of every fee-paying client you've got to log in? Frankly, no-ones bugfixing form to date has been so good that I'd bet on bugs still present in the client at 0200 being fixed before 1800 the same day.

Looking forward to seeing the stable, finished Tyrannis client patch available soon enough that people not on a T3 link can get it installed before the serverside patch is finished.

Jesus christ, chill the **** out. This is how it always happens on patch day.

They patch the server to make sure it's working and then release the patch.

You wouldn't want to release a patch before testing is done and not have it work and have everyone roll back their clients would you?

Believe it or not, YOU CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT FOR 12+ HOURS.

TheDollaGenerale is quite right.

Once the final build is ready Tyrannis is deployed in testing mode (sometimes known as VIP mode) and is tested by QA, Software and Operations. During this time there may be updates and hotfixes required to rectify some issues.

If you were to get a patch too early and you install it prematurely then your client will have difficulty accessing Tranquility when the server goes live; especially if any new code is installed or changed. This may result in you having to download a full client build which is obviously going to delay you longer.

I wish people would stop saying witch, it conjures up images of old hags with pointy hats and broomsticks.

Just curious, if that did happen would version numbers change. I'm just asking it's not like I lack enough of a life to download the patch prematurely and install it... yes... Rolling Eyes

As far as I am aware the build number will be the same as the one displayed on the official patch notes page. I will go double check this and let you know if that is wrong Smile

Pretend for a moment you are CCP. Wouldn't you have a back up server to implement the new expansion. Then shut down the current server and replace it with the new expansion server. Thus removing this long delay for the new expansion. While the expansion server is up the old server would be retrofitted with the new expansion and placed back in on next server shutdown/reboot.

Wouldn't that be more logical?
It would… if you had the resources to build that "backup server", and considering the scale of TQ, that's a pretty big honking "if".

How would you justify having a omfgawexomemegasupercluster sitting and gathering dust 98% of the time, just to let a rather small selection of people gather pixels for a few more hours a year?

Actually it would be a great fault tolerance should the main server take a dump one day. By having 2 mirrored servers it would allow you greater ability to avoid exceptional circumstances. This would allow for players to play almost 24 hours a day and something no other MMO is doing. Which happens to be the Modous Operandi for CCP

Thank good theres no other MMOs that have a working system to deploy partial patches even weeks before it goes Live, so the players donīt have to DL some GB all at once...
Oh wait, there IS..

Donīt know about the rest here, but right now thats the only thing I donīt miss about the big bad with an o in the middle :-/

Well, if the is realy just going to be available as the server is opened for the public again, there wonīt be much playing for me in in the next 2 Days :-/

Yeah I'm worried about that as well. I'm thinking GB's so we are bound to have a long download time. Unless they offer it from different downloads.

450 GB? If thats true I donīt want to know what pumps the Tranq - Sing patch up to 1.6GB!
Even with some kind of tools to monitore stability specific on Singularity I think it canīt be much smaller than 1.5GB.
Considering that and hoping for a release at 18:00 UTC latest, first will the server down for come hours due to some some tenth of thousands trying to DL it at once until I have to hug my pillow, what leaves me to start the DL tomorow morning what will then take for most of the day, so I can hopefully start it for a quick testrun before I have to sleep again or see the server go down again because they now are gonna deploy the next patch to maybe fix some bugs ;-)

Ow ow ow ow, didnīt see this post in its entire beauty before. So you say if would have deployed a patch bringing us to the latest state of Singularity your coders arenīt able to make a patch based on this data that implements the codechanges made in the last few days or maybe even in the last hours since QA startet on Tranq? Because thats all I would ever have asked for, a sollig foundation that contains most of the data and thus most of the DLing I will ahve to do, so that when the final version hits livestate there would just be some ten to hundred MBs be left to fix some bugs and glitches that turned up during QA.

actually last time they quitely put the patch up and didnt broadcast id suggest checking every 20 minutes or so, ccp will also setup legal torrents using bittorrent usually and probably create mirror download sites as well just to assist in download speeds

on a side note they have said give us to 1800 . Eve status eve-offline.net shows TQ is up and has 52 people on it i guess ccp is scaling up with the bug hunters, ISD and internal testers, this early in the day its a good sign last time it didnt get to this til about an hour before

so it would seem they are pretty well on track

I like how people always talk about 'the server' as if it would be a single computer..

EVE runs on a CLUSTER for christ sake! It's a bunch of servers tied together with a whole load of crap in it. The chances of them all going fubar at once is as big as the chance that a meteor strikes the Earth exactly on the spot where the EVE cluster is.

And no, the patch will NOT be 1.5gb or something, usually it is like 400~500mb. It's a PATCH. It UPGRADES files, it doesn't replace the whole friggin' client...

Sisi build works for me - not accepting connections. Don't take my word for it working when it goes live though.

So learn to use diffs.

Make the downloader download the majority of the patch data over a couple of weeks before it goes live (preferably using torrents, so you're not footing the bill for masses of server bandwidth. Pass the savings onto the customers please), then a smaller diff based patch to cover the changes made between the release of the big patch, and the servers going live.

Means you don't have the entire server population downloading a huge patch all at once, just a much smaller one (and they can get that through a torrent too, meaning it gets to them quicker, and at no bandwidth cost to you except for the initial seeds).

count on 1/2 a gigabyte just to be on the safe side. to be even safer, I'd take it to your mate's house anyway just in case the patch fails and you have to download the entire client again. but that's just what I'd do. your mileage may vary.
