I would just like to point out that svchost.exe is a common target for viruses, and many trojans utilize svchost.exe to do their dirty business.

svchost.exe is a simply program which is used to load and execute code from dynamic link librariers - since you can't execute .dll files directly. Thus one of the strategies employed by viruses and trojans is to use svchost.exe to execute malicious code instead of executing the code directly. I believe that this is a rather old trick, so there's no reason why any antivirus should mistakenly target svchost.exe instead of the actual .dll.

Few weeks ago after an update Bitdefender found itself as a trojan, as long as other major windows files. Try to beat that.

I'm not even in the tech industry, but I've known Mcaffe was garbage for at least 10 years. (well that and Norton's... thought they were the same company tho)

I am really surprised techies would even use it tbh.

I never liked Mcafee. When they switched to being nagware with the unified configuration screen that pretty much shelved Mcafee in my do not use bin never to be given a second thought. It's worse than Norton if there is such a thing. And I don't much appreciate applications that break themselves yet retain their functionality to conduct a financial transaction to upgrade you to the newest version and magically work again.

You sound like a mac user.

Your OS isn't popular enough to bother hacking, its not any safer then any other OS.

Why bother hacking 4-5 fringe people on a basically unused OS when you can hack 400-500 million people instead? It's just logic really.

It can be fine as it likes - 2006/5/4/3/2/1/00/99.... whatever it burned in my mind the fact that it acted itself as a virus almost impossible to remove. It shall never be forgiven, and im not the only techie to feel this way.

aye last norton i installed on a fresh pc, cause so many problems it was worse than a virus. then the fact i had to reformat to get rid of because i could not install any other av cause they insisted that i had av installed.

yea there was work around for the norton wont uninstall garbage, but being it was a new os install just seemed easier to wipe the drive and start over. nod32 or kaspersky ftw, lest when you uninstall them they are uninstalled, and 10x better at catching stuff than norton ever was.

I'm currently using Antivir (free). Seems to be pretty thorough. The nag screen is easily taken care of by editing one's system policies to disallow the nag program from running. Tested Comodo (free). Comodo's firewall is pretty cool and has some useful options but their antivirus definitions are hands down crap. Easy to get rid of though and you can keep the firewall.

nod32 and kraspersky, as a home user why pay for antivirus? There are good free programs available.
