I'm thinking to start training command ships for my Caldari main but it seems to me that a Drake can perform as Nighthawk almost in all possible situations.

I see two fitting issues: slot layout and powergrid:

Nighthawk 5 low - 5 med / 750 base PG
Drake 4 low - 6 med / 850 base PG
Ferox 4 low - 5 med / 1075 base PG

Nighthawk with 6xHM t2 + 1xMWD + 2xLSE t2 requires 2xPDU or 1xRCU
Drake with 7xHM t2 + 1xMWD + 2xLSE t2 doesn't require any PDU or RCU

Drake HM + scrambler + MWD has more EHP than a Nighthawk with same tackler mods (MWD + point), well Nighthawk can deal a bit more DPS ( with a 25% explosion velocity bonus), scan res/agility/speed/targetting range, missile range etc... is the same.

Thinking about a test server fight, Drake vs NH should be a very balanced fight, imo too much if you take in cosideration NH price/SP vs Drake price/SP.

Maybe I'm missing the right way to fit a NH, if you have any suggestion I'll be glad.

Try to fit active tank with cap booster on nh.

For PvP, Drake is almost always the far more cost-effective solution (pretty much the same performance at a fraction of the price and skill requirements).
The only place where a Nighthawk is justifiable instead of a Drake is PvE - there, you just can't beat the "applied DPS" level of a NH over that of a Drake, and it's easier to fit to maximize just tank and DPS (no tackle). However, you might as well just go with a Tengu there instead, but a NH is a better "lazy" alternative (far more forgiving in case you make a mistake).

This, pretty much. With the explosion velocity bonus Nighthawk is much more viable in PvE than a Drake, because it can field a 600-800 uniform tank while still putting out an average amount of DPS and is able to quickly dispatch cruisers in L4s by applying more consistent damage over time. It's only when you stack it up against BS spawns that it starts to get a little tedious and slow as even a fairly pimp fit with a minimal tank will still only put out 400-650DPS using HMLs AND drones which is not much compared to the +1k DPS a Torp Golem can put out even before drones are added while having an excellent tank to boot. What Akita is getting at is the explosion velocity bonus, makes every volley count more on a Nighthawk than on a Drake. But with Nighthawk at around 200MIL now and a decent Tengu at only 350MIL before fittings, you're not talking much of a difference, esp. when Tengu gets the added benefit of having a cruiser sized signature radius.

No contest in PvP just go with Drake, I meted out the absolute maximum difference with a T2 fit, and Nighthawk can give you maybe 70DPS more than a similarly fit Drake if you have Vs in all skills. Yet the Drake costs a fraction of what the Nighthawk does, and you can insure it to recoup a majority of your loss.

We were at war with an alliance harboring a corporate thief last fall, and one of their members fit a 1.3BIL PVP Nighthawk and was zipping around through Empire by himself, at which time he promptly lost said Nighthawk to a single 100MIL Geddon. A sobering loss, IMO.

they serve two different roles IMO,

drake is very much "in your face" either with HAM's or HML's and should fit scram and web, and should be buffer tanked.

NH should be active tanked and use range

something like this
[Nighthawk, HML Active (faction)]
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Damage Control II

Invulnerability Field II
Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive
Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 800
Caldari Navy Large Shield Booster
Republic Fleet Warp Disruptor

Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile
[empty high slot]

Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer II
Medium Ancillary Current Router I

Warrior II x5

the speed isn't bad for a CS, but claymore helps it out, about 500 dps tanked ( with LG crystals) which doesn't seem like much, but being able to dictate range, and with a faction point, really helps to keep control.

oh needs PG8, yeah it could do with some more grid tbh, maybe take the grid ( with lvl 5's, no implants, no rigs) to about 1000PG

Thank you for the ideas.

It's quite difficult for me to find an use of NH in small pvp/solo scenario. I think I'll go for same weapons spec @ 5 first while thinking about the possibile use of NH ;)
