Reinstalling Portal. Very Happy

Edit: I guess this means Portal 2 is not far away.

Valve have put hidden messages in Portal. You have to decode them with special software I think, they reveal images, and some Morse code.

Viral marketing, basically.

Also carrying radio's to specific area's gives you hidden messages.

In Morse-code, so keep a lookup table for that handy. Wink

This kept me up yesterday... and so far today too... I will give you guys a summary although I believe most of you are well capable of finding and checking up on the actual sources yourself. And mind you this is VERY condensed the scale of this puzzle is amazing...

1. Valve rolls out update, patch note says something cryptic... Most notable change that is noticed immediately is that there was an achievement added. You get the achievement by finding the radios in Portal and putting it on other specific places on the map... (26 total) When you put them somewhere else the sounds from them change to beeping noises and stuff people fairly fast recognized as SSTV.

2. People get working on extracting the data from the sound files. Morse code reveals some easter eggs among other things and the a username/pass for the BBS (later). The images extracted from the soundfiles are 'damaged' and show characters(letters/numbers), people start putting this together... And since the images are numbered (32 total) they are able to reconstruct an md5 hash from them...

3. People manage to find a match on the md5 hash, it apears to be a landline number... Some poking around reveals the line to connect to a modem with a BBS running on it, it doesn't take long until the username/pass are found to be in the morse code, though, due to heavy load on the BBS by this time, it takes some time for people to get in...

4. Ascii spam is received from BBS... seems to be a bit random but over several sessions and cooperation we seem to have gotten everything there is by now... People try to put together more piece/clear up the old data and start speculating on what this all means....

Last but not least, the ascii images from the BBS...

http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/7523/1267568212119.gif

These are enhanched ASCII images and the second one has been a bit colored etc and they get stuff obviously wrong, but I think they're the most interesting teasers up till now...

Heres the forum link
And this should point to an open google wave for making a doc with everything

The BBS went down for a bit a little while ago, and it seems a new images showed up, so maybe we can count on more teasers this way this week?... mah w/e Rolling Eyes

Google w/e you don't understand (BBS/SSTV/Morse/md5)

I think popular guestimates are that more will be revealed on the 11th or March (on the GDC) when gabe newell accepts something like game director of the freaking whatever, important stufff.... or before that...

What is certain is that theres still new material trickling out of the BBS modem... takes time...

Kotaku also has a nice grasp on it.

people still care about what valve does, little sheep still chasing after the promise of episode 3 when its been eons since it should have been out, and the entire model of episodic releases is a stupid money grubbing greedy $%^$#$.

Valve can go $%^# itself.

Yahtzee once visited Valve offices and managed to take a peek on ep3 development.

it looks like that they really take it seriously and so spend an enormous amount of time on the storytable so that they can surpass themselves and provide a quality experience to the gamer. Pretty much heated discussions at the table and hours spending on minute things and all of that.

that said, if the reason why they take so much time to release games is because of that, then I don't mind. I prefer to have an engaging experience with a quality story, than just having a watered down game that only has good gfx and meh storyline, like many of the said "AAA" games nowadays.

Episodes are not 'games' though. They are what would take place between two save points in the old days.
