I've heard so many conflicting opinions about POSs, I actually think I'm worse off from before I started asking questions/listening. My intention is to run a POS solely on an alt, preferably in 0.0.

1.) I wouldn't imagine it's very difficult to set up a POS in the depths of 0.0, once you've scouted for a bit, learned the locals, and generally tried to stay unnoticed. However, the problem is getting the fuel there and getting your mined profits out. I think this is my biggest concern, not knowing how to buy, then haul my fuel and sell my minerals safely. Also, despite how much better seclusion is, it also means 20+ jumps to a trade hub to buy and sell. Mining fuel could be possible as an alternative, but not an option for me.
2.) Is owning a small or medium POS profitable, without mining 32/64 rarities, assuming it has necessary defenses always online?
3.) Is it possible to run a POS without training a Freighter? Maxing out (or close to) an Iteron V to do hauling every 10-14 days is what I'm thinking.

I'm interested in POSs because of profits from it (hopefully) and because it's such a unique concept, that I would like to experience. On the cost side of things, I'm fine with putting 500m into this.

First, you'd probably want to find some Alliance or area, where you KNOW you can settle down.
If you drop a POS in some major alliance's location - Well, you'd probably have some dreads pewing at it sooner or later. (if you don't want to be in an alliance, but want a POS in 0.0, try talking with CVA)

About fuel:
AFAIK you still need to import NPC items from highsec to run your POS, so it'll probably be easier to grab ice products this way as well.

1.)If you get on friendly terms i think the alliance might let you through due to when i was in 0.0 they let traders go through long as you werent helping their enemies of course this depends on the alliance.
2.)I imagine it would be proftable as when i get my medium pos up it will make profit and thats without mining atm
3.)You would need a freighter if you only want to do a trip every 2 weeks cause the fuel takes up a fair amount of space

1) The set up is no problem .... keeping it may be one :)

2) Define profitable! What do you want to do with it? Just store your ore? Refining? Moon mining?

3) The fluel for 14-21 days should fit into the Iteron with no problem. But remember: The more often you run, the more often you can loose the ship!

Oh, right, I forgot to say it's for moon mining and maybe some reactions if I move up to medium Embarassed How much profits per week or month would I be looking at about, minus fuel costs?

I think talking with the local alliance is probably the best idea to get me into and out of null somewhat safely. How do you guys manage to do 20-30 jumps (40-60 both ways)? Must be mind-numbing ugh

I assure you, if there's one word to describe 40 jumps in 0.0 in an itty, that's NOT "mind numbing".

Having to pass thru some bigger alliance's space, that'd be quite nasty to achieve even with a fleet of battleships plus support.

Consider that the best you could get off of a medium is a simple reaction. You will be pumping out 33600m3 per week, while your fuel will be more like 10km3/week.

Your profit will depend on which simple you wish to make and sell, but yes, it will at least pay for the fuel and you might pull at least a 10m/week profit.

When people say moon mining gets you alot of money, they mean when you invest billions to start.

But as a hobby and an autopilot moneymaker, it's a good start.

I would also consider setting up in lowsec (0.3 or below) boardering a highsec.

Well, at least 10m a week isn't bad, but it's not great. I was hoping for at least 25m per week, which is still not a lot, but it makes the project worthwhile to me. Can I achieve 25m on a small POS? Would I be able to even get that much with a medium?

And the problem with low-sec is that it has more traffic. I could have some Dreads pop in rather quickly.

25M a week seems pretty low, considering the time and risk involved.

I think 250M a week would convince me to do something like that.
edit: In lowsec, that is.

25m is low in the grand scheme, but I think this would be fun project for myself. Just curious if 25m is even plausible or if I should maybe aim for low-sec...

It is plausible with right moon both low sec and 0.0. In 0.0 you will get killed tho unless you happen to be in some failalliance territory. Territorial alliances remove all neutral towers in their territory on principle as they are security isk and can be seen by their neighbours as sign of weakness (and actually in fact is sign of weakness.

In low sec you might also get killed ofc as mining or reactor tower can't sport reasonable defences, but it is not 99.5 % certain like in 0.0 with neutral tower.

Alright, here's what I've arrived at:

Get in a 0.0 alliance on my main and create a corp on my alt. Get the alt's corp into my alliance, setup the POS, and benefit from the sovereignty bonus. Now to find the right alliance...

you will have to pay a hefty rent fee to do what you suggest

I suggest finding an out of the way low sec system (non-FW regions and non-Caldari)...ammatar/khanid are both pretty quite along with some gallente and minnie low sec areas.

Or find a Class 1 or 2 wormhole with static high sec or even low sec holes. Reactions can be quite profitable and if you stick to empire space, logistics won't be too bad

I've heard of Alliances not charging for POSs to go up in their sovereignty, and I'm hoping to find one that won't. But low-sec will be an option if bad comes to worse.
