...I get this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, like...I just want to punch them in groin region.

I am not sure why. It didn't start tell second year of college. I think it's because every person I've ever met who has owned a Mac, I have disliked intensely. It has nothing to do with the Mac, just other things.

Of course, as any intelligent person knows, correlation does not imply causation. But this time, does it? Anyone else ever have this problem?

Mac owners do seem to have a reputation for being insufferably smug, but I've not really had any problems with them before. That said, I can never really understand someone buying one; the hardware is usually worth a fraction of what the Mac is sold for, so they're essentially paying massive amounts of money for an OEM operating system.

PC user is typically one of the following:

1)A person who uses the said pc for their job.

2)A person who uses said pc for gaming.

3)A person who uses said pc less then a couple minutes a day.

A mac user is typically one of the following:

1)A person trying to stick it to "the man".

2)Hippy.

3)An artist.

4)A person who simply wishes to be contrary.

Typically, it is a clear decision who I would and would not like to associate with. Very Happy

Meh, the only real difference anymoar between mac and pc is the game support and even that is getting better. It's just that mac users are easy prey to trolling. Razz

I understand how you feel. Every time I see people watching anime I just think "gross" to myself and want nothing to do with them. But I understand that this is just an irrational prejudice I have so I try to look beyond it.

Those people saying that Mac users pay more money are forgetting that first of all students get educational discount, and they are incredibly lax about it at the mac stores meaning they won't call your school and check. Second, Macs have higher re-sale value, so you bought it for more but you will also re-sell it for more. And third, your time is more important than money. This means if you enjoy spending time screwing around with windows rather than have an operating system that works it's of course the choice is yours.

I understand that this forum is fool of computer nerds who enjoy what I consider to be masochism. I have profession in a field where computers and what operating system you run are merely a tools to get results done, and the faster the operating system is and the less bugs is has, the sooner you will get your results. I am also female and find screwing around with computers to be incredibly boring and all the chest-beating arguments about how real men use windows or linux really don 't strike a chord with me. And also I never want Macs to go mainsteam and not to "stick it to the man" or appear standoffish. The reason is much simpler (just apply the occam's razor, really guys) - I want less spyware and viruses being designed for my mac, so that I don't have to spend my time and money dealing with this, while windows users can do whatever.

lol, here is the deal, I use both a MAC and a PC, probably equal usage too (I use my laptop and a MAC at school/work, and a laptop at home). Because I do research professionally, I can tell everyone this right now: stop arguing about which one people use most. You know what actually happened? You just have to learn both systems because everyone does things their way and you have to account for all of it. You learn the in's and outs of both OS so deep that programming-wise, you basically can do anything you want with any system (for the most part). I can honestly say that fundamentally neither require more work then the other at this level.

Why then do I use a PC at home? The only reason you use a PC for not work, to play some video games. PC's do that spectacularly well, and at a much cheaper cost.

I think thats why I don't get along with the rabid mac people. They don't REALLY know anything about computers, and yet they insist their OS is better.

It's not the Mac.
It's the pretentious attitude of Mac Users.

But if you really want to meet people that you would sooner kick in the nads, it's Linux users.

These are the guys who are home on Friday and Saturday night working on their systems, and acting like they won something for that. They think they are sticking it to the NWO or Bill Gates himself by not using WinX, but every damned time you try to get something done that involves one of these guys, there comes that big fat handicap.

Look, Bill Gates and his fellow Eugenicists are not jumping off bridges just because some nobody that is not making one iota of difference in this world refuses to use Windows. In fact they probably get the last laugh knowing full well that the "dissidents" are not getting anything done because they spend so much time patching, reinstalling, and cruising forums looking for solutions to problems.

I like the Marquee approach (nerdy Deep Space Nine reference incoming...). Use the enemies tools against the enemy.

Or at the least, be able to use f**king email and browsers without having to throw one third of your life into patching, repairing, and researching.

So while Windows users cross a wide spectrum, and Mac users tend to be those metrosexual Prius driving irritants talking crap about "social justice", Linux users are those guys who drive broken down trucks and have not kissed a girl since Voyager went off the air.

Yeah yeah stereotypes all around. Just having fun. Razz

Studying Archaeology and Anthropology I have learned something very interesting about Mac computers.

You walk into the Mac lab (yes, they have their own special room, just for macs, they wouldn't want them to get dirty afterall) and it's women and gay men.
You walk into the PC lab and it's everyone else.

I of course am not allowed into the mac lab on account of the aura of dirt they seem to think all "lower lifeforms" (i.e., someone not studying ART) carry. THIS is what I despise about the average mac user, it really isn't a tool to get work done (Even though it can be used in any area of work at an even level with a PC, they're both just tools), it's a fashion statement. It's the mac "lifestyle" I despise.

I have used a mac, it went well, it did it's job.
Good for you little mac, I'm sorry if you cry that I don't wear apple branded clothing and drink mocha-latte-tripple-frappe-choca-mega-whatever from my firewire-powered apple brand thermal glass while driving my prius plastered with apple stickers because of it but that's just not how I roll. Apparently this makes me not as smart a person in their eyes *Shrugs*

I fully admit that my experiences with mac users have coloured my perceptions of them and I'm sorry for that but every single mac user I have ever met in real life has been someone I wouldn't really want to be friends with due to their holier-than-thou attitude. If you're at the UWL and you are a mac user then PLEASE come find me and show me that I'm wrong.

There is something wrong with you if you think that your choice of computer system makes you better than someone else.

I can't help being a yuppy. Young, smart, educated, employed, with a good taste for food and computers and a pocket to support those tastes as well. That's the lifestyle we mac users gravitate towards, and please don't be jealous of us Twisted Evil

There is a certain level of enlightenment and yupiness you have to achieve first before we mac users will consider being friends with you. Something tells me you haven't achieved those yet.

It was like that in UWN. They didn't mix Macs and Windows systems. And they always seemed to be only used by the Art and Fashions students. Yeah, mostly woman and gay guys. As for going up to the hit on those girls, please, they we're happy to just be colouring in dolls sized clothes in Photoshop. Ironically you get more personality from a Mac computer.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Very Happy

Another anti-Mac thread.

I was a Sys Admin during my career and had to support all kinds of computers and operating systems, including Main Frames ... Mini Computers and of course the Micro Computers we all know and love ... not to mention the odd hardware contraption some of them might be plugged into ...

At various points in time over the last couple of decades I have considered buying a number of different systems such as Mac's, Atari's and Commodore Amiga's (remember those?). But didn't for practical reasons (CPU/$).

I've used the original Mac OS, the new Unix based one, various flavors of other Unix variants, VMS, CP/M, Trash Dos (which sucked), LDOS (an alternative to Trash Dos that was great), MS-DOS, Windows, Windows NT, etc, etc ... and others I've forgotten.

They're all just machines or software ... I don't really care what anyone uses.

All that counts is that it does the job you want it to do.

If someone is happy with their system - whatever it is - then good for them.

Now ... all that said ... there are people out there who like to think of themselves as being "better" than other people. Actually ... that sorta applies to almost everyone ... including me ... on some level ... in some way.

The jocks look down on the nerds - the nerds scorn the jocks ... did you ever see "High School Musical?" Yes ... it's terrible if you're over 14 ... but I sorta slept through it once ... and there was this one scene I was awake for where all the kids are in their own little cliques (like half a dozen of them) and each clique is telling someone from their group to "stay where you are" and don't try to be something you're not ... Whatever else this movie has going against it ... that was so true of not just high school - but human beings.

I played War Games (before there were micro computers) and drank beer with these War Gaming buddies of mine every Friday Night for 20 years (until marriages dissolved the group ...) and I can remember one of my friends talking about guys who were into .... some other hobby ... I forget now what ... but I can remember him saying in disgust "... those guys are nerds ..."

Ha! Ha!

I looked at my friend and told him that ANYBODY who played War Games (like we did) had an automatic ticket to nerdom ... He didn't like it but ... he couldn't argue with me and all the other guys at "our" table agreed.

Believe me. We looked down on EVERYONE else in the WORLD because WE had sat down at that table and (beer assisted) solved every single frakking one of the worlds problems! Ha! Ha! But they (the rest of humanity) were to stupid to see we were right.

LOL! Cracks me up ... but some of the guys at that table really bought into that. I ... actually wasn't quite as big a ... whatever ... as some of those guys ... I could get a date ... but ... I can remember how much "better" we thought we were than - everyone else.

Which of course is stupid.

But that's how people are.

Some are just worse about it than others ...

I knew it was stupid at the time and yet - I couldn't help feeling that way myself.

So ... yes ... the religious fervor with which some people espouse their operating systems/hardware can become annoying but ... think about it ... are you any better? Yes ... you may not be as bad ... but don't you have ... to some degree ... a superiority complex about ... something?

*shrug*

Of course ... if you want real insufferability ... look to the Mac Guys who know how to use the Unix OS underlying the Mac "shell" they use. Those guys look down on the other Mac users too.

Not the kind that use macs though, a conversation with them would be the most mind-numbing thing I can imagine, all they want to talk about is themselves.

Edit- I'd just like to explain, I am not Anti-Apple or Anti-mac, I'll happily use an apple product, I currently have a first generation iPod Touch (the now missing 16gb model) which I upgraded to from a second generation iPod Nano and I am very pleased with both of them, I use my touch every single day.
