Now i've heard people talking about "living" ships.. but I was thinking about the other side... living targets. not living ships with pilots in them, but giant living space monsters! rogue drones are almost trying to be this... but with space monsters a whole new mechanic could be created for their stats. so instead of sheilds and armor and hull they just have one type of hp... body hp let's call it. these creatures could be a whole new type of challenge in the eve universe. they could spawn randomly, but very rarely. high sec space monsters would be relatively easy. low sec could be harder. null sec should require a fleet to take down. this would be a new challange null sec alliances would need to tackle with... investing resources into protecting against space monsters. because null sec space monsters are tougher than null sec rats.. much tougher. there could be different space monsters that cause different problems. one that maybe feed on asteroid belts... taking away potenital resources. another might just have a taste for ship/POSs. maybe once planets play a bigger role in SOV.. they could cause planetery issues that need to be resolved. space monsters could maybe spread spores into the atrmosphere... interfearing wiht your DUST 514 ops.

i don't know.. i think it would be cool.

I'd support the space whales if they had a decent back story that fit into the EVE universe.

Isn't the EvE universe completely devoid of non-human sentient/spacefaring life? Even Sleepers and Jovians are Earth-descended humans, right? Adding aliens would be a huge shift of paradigm. I think rogue drones are exotic enough. After all, "space monsters" wouldn't necessarily hate us, right? Would we just be trashing their ecosystem and hunting them to extinction? Would they be capable of faster-than-light travel? I just don't like the idea.

In the olden days objects (asteriods, drones) would sometimes 'stick' to your ship. When this first happened to me with a mining drone, which I hadn't seen before, I thought it was some sort of space parasite, being all yellow and spidercrab like.

Wel yes I would say.

But offcourse it shouldn't just be thrown in there.

Perhaps lets say they exist only in special places.
Like some sites inside say some w-space regions.

Also there must be some benefit for finding killing and shooting them...
Perhaps they protect regions where certain valuable gasses can be harvested..
Can maybe open up alchemy for t3 or something who knows.

In the end I guess it doesn't matter.
Stil I liked the idea in a way, not sure if eve's gfx engine is strong enough to make this look cool enough.

+1 to this idea...would make missioning more interesting. Right now, only way it gets interesitng is when you get mercenary npc's using lasers in caldari ships lol. That or frigates webifying my drake. Damn, there goes my speed tank Laughing.

While it is theoretically possible if a lifeform could consist of a quantum material only in space, or some type of waveform, there would be nothing to sustain it and it would ruin the feel of Eve, thus no.

Jabba the Hut and Space Slugs... *Facepalms*... NO NO NO... Play Star Wars the MMO or whatever if you want the "rubber mask" crew to join in... I evoke the great Edward James Olmos:

"I told Roger (BSG 75) if I (Cmd. Adama) ever see an alien on the set, I am going to give a single scream and then faint dead away... then quit and leave the studio and never return"

Words of wisdom that... do not be silly.

based on your comments (and the fact that i'm not loaded up on thanksgiving wine) i will refine my idea a little.

-Space Monsters/Space Whales introduced as a new enemy/environmental hazard. They originate from W-space. New W-space systems would be added to the game that are homes to these creatures, instead of sleepers.

-In any system that is not W or 0.0, there will be a "space monster warning" in local. These creatures enter other systems through the wormholes. CONCORD will take no position on their existence. Missioners will have new missions available to deal with mission versions of these creatures. FW players will be encouraged with rewards to deal with their local invasions. Null-sec sovereignties will want to deal with the monsters anyway they deem fit.

-There will be different types of monsters with different habits. One that eats asteroids. One that simply spreads it's spores. there could be many other ideas.

Why? What possible reason would be served to drop the future capitals re-vamp, future dominion changes, T3 frigates, etc... and introduce something, that (imho) would make the game "silly" and that doesn't work with anything about EVE's current background history, when such things WOULD take away from the development of (and require rebalance of) the features that are already in the works and are part of the EVE universe that isn't in the game yet.

...Wouldn't it be cool isn't enough of a reason... many games and works of fiction have been ruined when someone thought "wouldn't it be cool" and then the thing in question when south faster then a goose with a ram-jet in fall.

NO... I do not want "space whales" or whatever else floating around, I have a hard enough time dealing with some of the "silly" things already in missions and such - "rouge-drones" are about as far as I want to see this concept in EVE.

I want a "walking in stations" more then I want "space slugs" that eat passing ships or to see an "alien" running around... the idea of "life other than humans" - in EVE - would be best served on a plate as dinner - given the attitude of humans to eachother - I don't see any reason why humans wouldn't have killed off all the "space whales" for sport or for "pod oil lamps".

Lets assume they where in the game, they all died, the pod-oil lamp market has crashed, and they are now only in history books... I could get behind that.

The EvE Galaxy is roughly 0.00000000000001% explored, IF that.

You mean to tell me that in the entire other 99.99999999999998% there isn't a single alien species that isn't a descendant from Earth? Give me a break.

Doesn't have to be alien really. Could be... A Sansha experiment in living ships gone wrong, could be a split off variant of Rogue drones or it could be a rogue drone of an ancient race.

They could be either gas suckers or asteroid eaters or they could spawn in gaseous atmospheres of moons.

Mmmh, T2 space whales...

Only systems with habitable and usefull planets are annexed and connected to... the rest (99.99999999999998% quite possibly) is trash, does not have required resourced to make the investment of traveling there worth it.

If you try to denounce something, think first, and use what we know about the universe atm. Yes there probably are earth like planets and systems with loads of heavy elements (these need to be created by the larger heavier suns, at whom, in turn, it is impossibly to have earth like planets)... But the trillions of other stars, are trash, simple as that.

Lifeforms in space? VERY resilient microbes at best, large complicated creatures? Please, give me a break. I know eve is all fictional and it's actually fluidic space but no, just no... It doesn't belong to eve, take your idea elsewhere.

I... um... ah... *Facepalms*... *Blinks*... *farts* - "oh, sorry wrong end, how embarrassing...

Ok, NO, NO, NO... silly... silly... I don't need "space-whales-slugs" in my way when I am in a mission room... I do not want green men and ham, I do not want them Sam-I-Am. I do not want them in a belt, I do not want to be smelt... I do not want them here or there, I do not want them with some hair... I do not want them in my space, I do not want them any place...

And now for something completely different - a sing along:

..."I Think I'm A Clone Now"

Isn't it strange
Feels like I'm lookin' in the mirror
What would people say
If only they knew that I was

Part of some geneticist's plan (plan-plan-plan)
Born to be a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
There in a petri dish late one night
They took a donor's body cell and fertilized a human egg and so I say

I think I'm a clone now
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

Look at the way
We go out walking close together
I guess you could say
I'm really beside myself

I still remember how it began (gan-gan-gan)
They produced a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
Born in a science lab late one night
Without a mother or a father, just a test tube and a womb with a view

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And I can stay at home while I'm out of town
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

Signing autographs for my fans
Come and meet the carbon copy man
Livin' in stereo, it's all right
Well I can be my own best friend and I can send myself for pizza so I say

I think I'm a clone now
Another one of me's always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
I've been on Oprah Winfrey - I'm world renowned
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
That's my genetic twin always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)

They don't even have to be very alive. Like capital sized drones that drop goodies when they die. Maybe just use the Anshar model with Drone appendages. And you have to use a harpoon instead of a scrambler. That's it.

And maybe a special Space Whaling barge...

And a Space drift net for them to get caught in.

And they have to make the Distressed Whale noise when you shoot them.

What we need is some solid Concept Art for various space monsters, an idea about their true purpose in the game, (IE to supply variable amount of moon minerals to the game), And vague ecology and history.

Yes we already know there is plenty of Non-Terran life in EVE, most of it is either a Pest or a Meal.

The Problem with Space Dragon's is that to use wings properly they have to be a couple KM across and only weigh like an ounce. It just looses some majesty when your chasing one with a Cloud Harvester instead of a gun.
