So after watching a lot of EVE vids, I notice that very many people (at least in those vids) use the mouse to manage the mods. Why would you do that when it's easier and (imo) more controlable to use the keyboard?

So who here uses the mouse, and who uses the keyboard?

Keyboard for guns.... mouse for mid and low mods.

I didn't know you could move your ship on the keyboard. I know you can activate modules with the function keys.

I only bother with the keyboard for the highslot modules, the middle- and lowslot modules are activated with a mouse or a tablet pen.

TBH, since weapon grouping, I don't even use the keyboard for highslots any more...
Plus, you can't overheat individual mods using the keyboard (AFAIK).

Actually you can drag module icons to make all the modules you need "high slot" and use F-keys to activate them. I always have my AB/MWD as one of those highs as well as shield booster, survey scanner (on mining ship), codebreaker and analyzer.

shift+F-something = overheat that module.

I used to have ctrl+i to open the cargohold, but since it also toggles italic in text window I had to switch to something else and still didn't think of something else.

ctrl+shift+a - all drones engage
ctrl+shift+s - all drones return to bay
..???... - no way to launch drones with a shortcut 8(

Add 'Shift' to the key group for that module:

Ctrl+F5 = Activate low slot 5

Ctrl+Shift+F5 = Overheat low slot 5

But you can set them to whatever you want. Esc>Shortcuts ingame

Edit: Eleg posted while I was typing. Yeah, I was really ****ed when I realized there was no 'launch drones' shortcut Mad

I only use the keyboard since the day I lost an expensive ship because I misclicked the overdrive button and accidently turned my MWD off.

I even changed my shortcuts:

F1-F4: 4 first high slots.
F5-F10: Midslots
F11: All Drones, Engage Target
Ctrl+F1-F8: Low slots

Shift+F1-F10: Overload that module (see above)
Shift+Ctrl+F1-F8: Overload that lowslot module.

I never misclick anymore and always keep my Warp Disrupt/Scrambler in the first midslot (F5) to tackle faster.

Problem is "which drones" cause you can potentially have multiple groups of drones in the bay hence no "lunch" shortcut...

If there's one thing I absolutely miss from playing WoW, its the keybind system.

When I played WoW pretty much every skill I had, used a bind. The F keys are terrible, and having to use modifier keys such as alt and ctrl are awful game design. This is why I click in Eve.

If ever the day comes around where I can start binding items to letters, it will be the first thing I do. Until then I will click everything.

Right. But we could have a set of shortcuts to "launch the group tagged 1" etc. Then in the right click menu for drone groups add an option to "tag this group as 1"

To many damn buttons I have to push to use the keyboard.

Also, yah for CTRL and ALT... now if I just don't hit my windows key and minimize my client or even better yet find out that a missed typed hot key is the keyboards default "sleep mode".....

In addition I need the mouse to select targets, loot and fly the ship. As a left handed mouse user I am screwed. Most of the function keys for flying would be on the left side, same side I am using the mouse with. So, I can't fly or lock if I am using the KB for module activation.

In the end it's just a PITA to use the KB... for me.

Now I do have a configurable key placement and key mapping user interface board. I never bothered to set it up for Eve. I spend a lot of time chatting and having 2 keyboards on the desk was a bit much. Then again I use to use a tablet instead of a mouse way back when I mined in a vex/brutix/domi. Cool

G15 keyboard. Everything on it's G Keys.

The mouse is for movement and clicking on the overview.

I'd be happy if I could just use the arrow keys to move through the right-click menus.

At work, I find it easier to use the keyboard to activate menus and buttons rather than moving the mouse and trying to click (sometimes very, very small) buttons or menu items. It'd be nice to be able to do the same in Eve.

hence why I said "mods"

As for the problem with ctrl and alt, I don't think it's a problem at all. really easy, and you normally only use perhaps F1-3 (and the ctrl and alt version of these)

You need a mouse for any game that is truly 3-D.

With weapon grouping you can fit all the important modules into the "high slot" area and just use the f1 keys anyway.

I use both. Keyboard for highslots, mouse for mid and low. I can never remember hotkeys beyond around 8, anyway.

Sad This would be a good idea, to get hotkeys for groups of drones.

Quoted for truth.

I use the keyboard for as many functions as I can.
Only thing I have to remember is Damage control for my low slots, and then I can remember mids = ALT.

Simple: no need to look away from the screen. Keyboard shortcuts are nice for some things, but it's too easy to accidentally have your fingers on the wrong F-keys, which could be a fatal mistake in a fight. So that means you're going to have to look down to make sure you're pressing the right key, and that's a bad thing. On the other hand, with the mouse, your attention is never away from the screen and you are very unlikely to press the wrong button.

wouldn't that be nice....

if I could use f1-f8 for highslots and then 1-8 for midslots, and qwerty for lowslots
(hell f1-f8, and 1-8 would probably be plenty)

or even better just freebind everything,

ctrl+alt+f1 and such is just a pain in the ass.

I mostly only use ctrl key to target the ship. My fingers aren't made for function keys since i have to press ctrl every second time and keeping fingers constantly on ctrl and function keys is very unergonomic.

Very bad game design Confused

give us WSAD for ship control and 1-9 qerf for module control.

^that, many people cant be bothered to learn a small set of shortcut keys. (Pro tip - drone shortcut keys, go bind them)

I'm going to blame the invention of the web browser to scapegoat this nonsense on.
