Going to try this out this weekend.

What I am wondering is, what is the difference between "salvaging" a wreck and using the "open cargo" function on the same wreck? Does salvaging give me different/better items?

Salvaging gives you different items, yes. Some are better with regards to the amount of money you can make with them, some are worse.

Looting a ship with the "Open Cargo" button will get you actual usable modules, like guns and scanners and the like. You can install these on your own ship if you can fit them and if you so desire.

Salvaging a ship will get you broken components that cannot be used by themselves, but are used as the raw materials for making rigs.

Open Cargo will just allow you to loot whatever "drops" the wreck has> Salvaging is a different function and needs too have the skill Salvaging trained at least to one, level 2 or 3 is better. I have heard but can't confirm that for sleepers and some other high ennd npcs you need salvaging at a higher level like 5, also training to level 5 will allow Salvager II

Skill Salvaging: "Proficiency at salvaging ship wrecks. Required skill for the use of salvager modules. 5% increase in chance of salvage retrieval per level."

Modules (high slot): Salvager I
Salvager II

You can salvage wrecks you own and wrecks you don't own. Salvaging somebody else's wrecks will not criminally flag you.

Looting a wreck you don't own will do that!

Salvaging a foreign wreck may not be considered "nice" by the owner, but there is no punishment through the game mechanics.

I will only salvage what is mine....for now atleast.

Like mining, I prefer just to sell to the market, without refining or using in some other way. Is there good money to be made like this from salvaging or do you only get rich by further processing what you salvage?

Thanks for all the info!

As always, the chances to make money with something in EVE Online depends heavily on the local market situation ...

Well you can get rich(er) buy further using the salvage items. if you get enough of the right ones you can use them along with blueprints to make rigs. which are modifications to the ship that "tweak" certain attributes

Salvaging is a crap shoot but it averages out to make you a good bit of money.

Tritanium bars, Melted Capacitor Consoles and armor plates get you some good money ... much of the rest of it ... not so much.

Scout around for prices and sell them if you aren't looking to get into making things.

You don't have to just sell them to buy orders though - you can create sell orders and ask more for them but that's getting into Trading.

It all depends on how much you want to go down any particular path.

As to salvaging other peoples wrecks ... that sort of depends.

If you are ratting - and come into some belt with a ton wrecks in it and no one there. Probably no one is going to care if you salvage those wrecks. If you want though - you can simply ask if anyone cares if you salvage wrecks. For the most part, belt rats wrecks are not going to yield much so the miners who created those wrecks with their drones ... usually do not care.

The people who really care - are the Level IV Mission Runners who are being hit by Ninja Salvagers who have scanned their ship down and come to visit the mission space. Those Level IV wrecks are worth much more than your belt rat wrecks.

As long as you don't loot someones else wreck though - they can't actually do anything to you for salvaging (except war dec your corporation if you **** them off enough) without Concord interfering to blow them up.

I must have gotten lucky my first time out, got some sort of mining enhancer worth 25 million isk, of course the market in my region will only buy it for 16 but I can wait till it comes around to a better price. Second best thing so far is copper tags worth 290K each. Right now I am sticking to pirates in asteroid fields but later will try mission pirates and see what comes around.
