The original OFP was epic. This one sucks. They gutted the game to make it fit into a format consoles could handle. I bought it without the benefit of a demo and/or pirating it first to check it out. Lesson learned.

To any of you original OFP fans out there: just skip it.

Also, this makes me despise consoles all the more. They are a plague that will never end, ruining PC games over and over again. FFS, Halo, one of the most successful IPs ever was supposed to be on PC originally, hell, on Mac even. Anyway, I digress. Consoles are the devil.

In other news, Dust doesn't look like it has any new gameplay over and above what Planetside delivered five years ago. Fail?

If it remains a generic shooter then yes its going to fail. But it still may make a buck.

Consoles unfortunately, are dominant. I put this down to the fact they have (had?) better Local-Multiplayer support than your average PC (Does/did?). The fact Computer game manufacturers heavily neglected this area only made matters worse. This compounded with the fact that they are much easier to "Deal with and maintain" than PC's means parents are much more likely to opt for the console and a handful of games. Plus, as easy as it is, playing pirates games on a Console is infinitely harder than on a PC. Meaning the games they make are much more "Attractive" from a marketing point of view.

As a gamer, Consoles suck. As a business model, they are brilliant.

Eh, the latest patch fixed the majority of bugs for me in arma2. I'm moastly happy with it but it could still use another hotfix or two.

There is a LOT I like about OFP2. It's fit and finish are really good. The art style and UI design are excellent. The sound design is really good.

Overall I like the player movement and weapons feel. I think that the scope reticles could have been made much finer/tighter a I think they're lacking a bit in the precision department, but that's just me.

The major issues for OFP2: basically non existent multiplayer without a dedicated server, the single player stuff feels like it's 'on rails'. Sure, it claims to be 'free form', but it's not. If you go out of the designers intended AO then you get face****d by the ever present 'enemy gunships'.

Some PVE missions are very difficult because it's unintuitive as to what you need to do. Additionally, your AI squadmates can be really stupid and frustrating to wrangle, in addition to the lack of some basic controls like designating fields of fire and other things.

The command UI is designed around console controllers, so PC users just get ****ed when trying to command a squad in the middle of a firefight.

The game performs well from an FPS standpoint. I have everything cranked to max and am running at 1650x1080 with 4x FSAA and have great framerates on an old-ish computer/graphics card (8500 gts and some dual core intel 2.8GHz).

A lot of people have been complaining about it's lack of graphics, but I think it does a great job with it's open environments, it's use of grass/foliage is very well done and it has great draw distance.

The OFP devs screwed the pooch when they didn't allow the player to play the various squad mates and commandeer any vehicle they wish like LAVs and APCs and tanks and stuff. Oh well. On to the next one...

And even if it could use a fix or two it's not just the game itself that made the original OFP what it was, it was the modding community. I bet the people who created mods like SLX and ACE won't touch OFP2 even with a 10 foot pole.

Any game that shouts "I was made for consoles but I'll let PC gamers have a go as well just so there's 2 target audiences, and neither of them are getting what they've paid for because of it". can go DIAF. Tbh I almost always DL a pirated version of a game first and if I like I'll go buy it instead. Any PC game that greets me with "press enter to start" already lost a ton of bonus points and it'll have to be REALLY REALLY good to win me over.

I've read, if you don't die you can finish the 11 campaign missions in 5 hours.

Well you can't expect it to look like the original when it wasn't made by the makers of the original. I play Arma 2 alot and its great fun.
