I'm a 1.5M SP (mostly in Learning skills) Caldari pilot, been doing L2 missions in high-sec in a Caracal. I'd like to try heading out into low-sec or even 0.0 to do some missions and/or ratting there, for some added excitement. However, there's literally thousands of places I could go, and I have no selection criteria. Is there any way to go about choosing a home-away-from-home in low/null-sec?

I've got the 2d maps, I've seen the alliance influence map, and I know how to use the EVE agent finder. Do I just randomly pick a region and head there in a shuttle with a no-implant clone to see what it's like? Should I be looking at the NPC 0.0 regions, or the alliance-sovereignty 0.0 regions?

If you're in lowsec, don't bother with the no implant clone. Just make sure that, before your ship pops, you select a celestial object and spam the **** out of the "Warp to" button. Start doing this BEFORE your ship pops, and podding you is virtually impossible. The only thing to watch out for is smartbombing gatecamps, which is why I'd tank anything you fly around in lowsec. A tanked frigate should survive just fine.

As for picking an area...pick the assend of lowsec/0.0. If you try to rat in Amameke, you will die horribly. on the other hand, there are other areas where you wont get harassed constantly (but still will occasionally). Also, remember you can also do cosmic anomalies. It's like ratting, except with a better chance of a faction spawn, and not as location-dependent as missions.

I'd head to Providence after reading the Law of Greater Providence and checking the CVA's KOS list.

To narrow it down:

Use the agent finder and find low-sec systems that have faction and quality agents you want to use. Then use the in-game map tool and see what kind of activity is along your way and at your destination. Look for a good agent of the faction you want in a quiet piece of low-sec to start.

Search the forums. There are a number of good threads concerning low-sec survival to help you. Mine and Kessiaan's are over here now:

Rookie Guides

Kessiaan's is more succinct and informative imo. Mine sounds like the awed, bewildered ramblings of a rookie in low-sec. I wonder why?

*scratches head*

Fly safish, stay frosty and try to learn from every mistake. Most importantly: have fun.

A lot of low sec is populated close to the gates to high sec. If you look on the map there are a lot of quiet, out of the way systems well away from high sec but have decent stations and agents. I found one like that and just looked to see who was there over a period of a day or two. No obvious pirate corps seemed to roam there and there was little traffic as it did not go anywhere. In any given day the map often showed no podding or sometimes even ships destroyed. So a good place to start out from.

I'd add that trying to go solo in 0.0, even in the NPC regions is probably not going to be much fun. you'll want to either go to CVA space where soloing is viable, or join up with a 0.0 holding alliance or at least get yourself made blue to the local residents. with the exception of CVA space, no one will hesitate to destroy you if you're not blue when in 0.0 space.
