Immediately cease your membership's unruly behavior in space. We wish to co-exist peacefully but if you continue your current trend we will be forced to act most justly.

This is your one and only warning.

My superior intel-network gave me reports of members of the Red Federation really badmouthing about the Blue Republic.

I wanted to post the chatlog, but then noticed it might get me banned to post such rude words about members of the true one and only Blue Republic.

On the other hand there were rumors about the Blue Republic fully mobilising their powerful military machine. We might have a brutal conflict on our hands. I personally think that this is a sad development. Think about the children? Does anyone think about the CHILDREN?

It does! In the context of harvesting corpses left in the wake of podded ships, let's take a moment to consider how human blood can go from red to blue to purple.
As we know from high school biology and our own personal experiences, most blood is red due to oxygenated hemoglobin found in red blood cells (RBCs). As oxygenated blood moves away from the heart through the aorta and on to the arteries of the human circulatory system, oxygen diffuses into extravascular spaces to provide for the oxygen needs of the body.

And when blood moves through the capillary beds, having been depleted of oxygen, it becomes blue. Deoxygenated blue blood moves through the veins, converging into larger vessels until they drain into the heart via the superior and inferior vena cava. If you want to be smarter than a 10th grader though, you should know that blood remains deoxygenated until it moves through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, receives new oxygen from our respiratory system, and is returned to the heart via the pulmonary vein, where it recirculates through the body.

But when a person dies, things change. Obviously, the blood doesnít circulate as it would, and instead it pools in the vessels of the circulatory system. As decomposition gradually takes place, the smallest vessels break down and blood escapes into the extravascular spaces. Some blood may remain oxygen rich (especially that which has pooled in the arteries), and some may be oxygen poor (as converse, it generally pools in the veins). As the blood seems into the extravascular spaces, it will almost always drain into the lowest center of gravity. That is to say, if a person dies lying on his back, then the blood will pool in the dorsal regions, such as the hips, back, buttocks, and upper thighs. This creates a condition called post-mortem staining, which is very much purple in nature.

Itís hard to say what would happen to the circulatory system of a person who dies in the vacuum of outer space. I once supposed that the frozen corpse of a certain fat lady beloved by Goonswarm would pool at the nearest available center of gravity, namely her extremely large ass. But upon further study, it seems that flash freezing a body causes exceptional post-mortem damage to the circulatory system. Remember that blood is mostly water, and as it freezes it expands. If flash frozen, itís likely that most if not all of the capillaries and possibly some of the small arteries would simply burst through arterial lumen and, if unfrozen at some point, leak into the nearest available extravascular space. It would cause a particularly yucky form of hemorrhagic edema, and itís why most morgues donít keep bodies at the freezing point of water. Should any post-mortem care need to take place at some time, such as embalming or organ harvesting, it would be rendered difficult, if not impossible.

Time for lunch. Goodbye, thread!

The iron in hemoglobin that binds the oxygen is what causes blood to be red. Some animals do not use hemoglobin, notably crustaceans like lobsters. They instead use a copper based protein. Their blood is blue.
