I expect most of you know this http://www.damagedealer.com . Well, recently i've had a few people mentioning "I saw your video on damagedealer". So I went to check it out. What I found was my videos, uploaded by the owner, badly mangled and stretched. I Sent a polite message requesting they be taken down.  Quote:

But to sumarize something,
what makes you think that the videos cannot be watched properly on DD, formerly evetube. You can even download the original version of the videos. The Streamfiles are 2 pass encoded h264 videos. The advantage is that people can take a shot at the video without downloading a few hundred of megabyte of data and just jump to minute 10 of a video as example.
Additional to that, DD may look like a commercial page, but in fact it doesnt make huge profit, the money earned from advertising is used to pay licence fees for the music included in the videos that are uploaded by our users, so that its legal to show them if they include commercial music tracks.
All your videos had good ratings and together around 2000 unique views (2000 views from different ip adresses), im sad that they are gone now.
Now, I thought this sounded a bit ****y of him. I also was all :? at the quality thing, as when you click the 720p butan it just stretches the small blurry flash video even more. I thought about it for a bit and, with the fact in mind that basically he was moaning about me not wanting him to use MY videos to make a (aparrently small) amount of money for himself, I sent another message saying that I understood his motives to some extent, and that he could now keep them uploaded (seeing as he hadn't actually removed them anyway, natch) I then explored the site a bit more, and found he had blogged this: Quote:

(but I couldn't see the full comment as the blogging feature is impossible to use.) I waited a week with no reply to my frankly unessesary offer for him to keep using them, and sent a message asking for some kind of thanks, as I was feeling quite ****ed off with him. All I got back was a "I did reply!" reply. Seeing his frankly ******ed opinions and selfishness, I have been feeling more and more annoyed with him. tl;dr, the owner is a douchebag. |

No whispous, I'm sorry to say, but it's you.
Seriously, this guy does a tremendous community work for the movie makers. A LOT more people actually watch the videos only because of this site.
I have not found an online streaming site with better quality until now and I appreciate his efforts very much.
If you for some reason I really cannot understand feel hurt about someone doing you a great favour (makig your movies more known, and thats the only reason you publicate your movies in first place, isn't it?), then something is seriously wrong. |

I agree with the op,
Damage dealer owner should pay royalties for the privalege of wispous's work.
Even though it's not his music or technically not his game that he filmed, he should stillg et something for his creativity.
And the quality is crap btw. |

I do find it ironic that someone who puts copyrighted music into an eve video and distributes it freely is mad that someone else is taking his creative work and placing it on a website without paying him for it.
I SERIOUSLY doubt this guy makes a profit on this after paying for the server and everything, but it he does, mad props for him. I didn't tell him he could upload my video but I just found out its on there, and got to watch it one more time without waiting for a download, which was quite nice actually. |

whispous is right, aspect ratio on the videos isn't being respected. That should be fixed, it makes it look terrible.
And if whispous, the creator of the videos, asks for them to be removed, why shouldn't the owner of damage dealer respect his wishes?
I don't see whispous asking anywhere for compensation. |

If you read Whispous' entire OP you will notice he was not out to get money out of this. He was a bit miffed at the fact that they were uploaded by someone else, and apart from the tracks not being his propriety, the movies were his work and represented him. When he decided to let it go and extend a friendly hand, he found that comment on the blog and got treated as he did. Maybe you should all read the OP first before replying ... DD fanbois - to quote the DD blog. |

I tried watching the vids streamed and honestly, if you think that's quality (let alone something worthy of 'HD' tags) you're sorely missing out on the good stuff. Download and watch, don't use the stream for a good quality movie.
Completely agree with OP here, if DD actually didn't **** the quality of the vid (omg have you guys actually compared the stream to the real thing?) there wouldn't even be a thread. Legally though, not sure if you can anything about people uploading a vid you put online without full rights.. |

I understand where you're comming from.
You created something and now in that situation you felt you didn't have control over your work. Understandable, but still, you made that video for recognition, to encourage people to PvP or to get Eve-famous I don't know you motives. By having your movies there you get closer to achieving your goal, as it reaches out for a wider audience, perhaps someone that doesn't play Eve, and thinks your video was so inspiring he might pick up the game.
It's a win-win situation to share, culture and creations.

I totally hear you whispous, I had the kinda the same problem a girl from my old ally uploaded my only vid that Ive done so far (and never really released even though its upped on eve-files). I feel copyright issues right there even though im not a lawyer it really felt crap to have someone else get the probs for MY vid that I frapsed, I cut and I put effort into.
Ive never had anything to do with the creator of damagedealer but from what you say I support you mate feels good to be backstabbed ey? :( |

i deleted your videos without any questioning as soon ive read your email, i also explained to you that i didnt understand why. Your reasons for this are ok and i respected them. You want that people watch it in the quality you made it, thats fine. But you can also download them on DD, you do not have to watch the stream.
I know the problem with the aspect ratio but im not able to fix it for the time being.
And for the money, as i said in another topic. Damagedealer generates revenue from the advertising but NO profit. The advertising money (and its not even penetrant advertising like layers) is used to pay 2 streaming servers with around 10TB of traffic each month.
Additional there is a hosting server which is also paid by this advertisings which offers anyone to get advertising free webspace with php and mysql support.
The best thing is... the people who watch the videos on damagedealer never complained about the quality, and most people download the original file after watching anyway. Also your videos whispous all had good ratings and a massive amount of views.
You create videos, i create sites like damagedealer. Nothing wrong with that.

I run a few eve related sites and I can attest to them making way less than they cost to produce and publish :)
I make maybe $10-15 a month and it costs $45 to run. Admittedly I have just upgraded from a $8 a month package and am only using about 10-20% of my current resources but even when I am maxing out my "semi-dedicated" server I cant see myself more than breaking even. I make School and Education websites for a living, I make eve websites for fun. I imagine the owner of Damage Dealer is no different. |

It got NOTHING to do about copyrights or any kind of general whining.
I has to do with idiots that screw up your creation.
The fine people that make eve video's generally take allot of time and effort to present the eve community with with the best to there ability.
It is painful to see a noob run off with your work and screw it up in the worse way possible. It gets worse when you have to cleanup the mess that the noob left behind. (or even worse when you can't clean it up)
I care one bit about copyrights in general, but I hate to see my work turned into a pile of rubbish with a simple act of faulty uploading the video's.
If you do something, do it right, or don't do it at all. |
