So I have all relevant skills at level 5 and I just went one for ten on invention jobs with a lifetime average of well under 45% at level V and 30% on jobs with 2/3 skills at 4 with the 3rd at V (mech eng. @ V). I've done hundreds of jobs and the difference between lvl 4 and 3 is so small it really seems like i wasted my time training the skills to V. Maybe its just me but there really should be a much better percentage for the months of traning between level 4 and V. Frankly I want my time back.

I'm no expert in Invention, but I do know that the marginal benefits of training ANYTHING from Level 4 to Level 5 is usually not worth the time. There are a few exceptions that come to mind (Production Efficiency, Refinery, basic skills like Electronics and Engineering), but there are many more examples to the opposite.

There are those who do train things to level 5 to push every little thing out of that skill, but it's usually not worth it unless there is a particular ship, module or other skill book in mind.

It's the same with EVERY skill in EVE. It's about diminishing returns. That last level which takes you 20d will not give you a better increase than the first level which took 12 hrs.

Statistically not very relevant, do some more first. Like, a few hundred more.

It's not like you didn't KNOW beforehand how much "additional" benefit you'd get from bringing those to L5... as there's plenty of calculators around to show you EXACTLY how much better it is in the long run.
I just hope you started with the encryption methods first.

I guess the point I wanted to make was that taking the skills tied to invention to V should do more then help you accrue data-cores faster. All that does is ease the pain of failing that many cruiser inventions + decryptors. And I went mechanical engineering first can never have enough of them Wink

I only train a skill to L5 if it's absolutely necessary for the goal; for the invention-related Science skills, I won't train any of those to L5 for specifically the reason noted above: it's all about diminishing returns. I also haven't found a need yet to include decryptors in any my jobs, so I save on that cost. I have good days (5 of 7 successes) and bad days (last week one one day I went 0 for 10; that sucked). I'd love the average to be higher, but I guess it's a price we pay for our fun. In the area of space I'm in my Mech Engr and Elec Engr agents are about 20 jumps round trip, so I don't do their missions but a couple times a week.
