The Corp I recently joined has been dragged into a war against a Pirate Corp. It looks like most people involved on either side will be flying battleships and cruisers.

Seeing that I'm fairly new and haven't got enough decent skills to fly a cruiser I'm thinking of falling back on my Catalyst Destroyer. What tactics would anybody suggest using?

I'm thinking the only real help I can offer is trying to get in close kamikazee style while the other ships battle it out from distance. Would this tactic have any chance of success?

Any set ups would be appreciated as I'm a recent convert to the game with no PvP experience.

Best advice I can give is to not fly a Catalyst. It is by far the worst Destroyer. You'd be much better off in a Tristan or Incursus.

This, but I would apply it to destroyers in general. You're slow, paper thin, and you have a huge sig radius, which means some cruiser is going to randomly one-shot you. You will be much more useful to your corp flying a tackler frigate than throwing away destroyers for minimal gain.

Catalyst is the only ship horizontal and perpendicular to its thrust direction. Plus it has a cool lil dish spinning around on it. Catalyst is made of awesome sauce!

problem with all destroyers is that they have a tank that is smaller then most frigs, with a bigger sig radius, which makes them easier to hit. Destroyers are really only good for one thing which is shooting frigs out of the sky, which they do by fitting a lot of guns and having a range advantage over frigs (destroyer bonus) Generally all Destroyers are a bad idea in pvp... Your best bet will be a tristan with an AR buffer tank

Here is an interesting build, Basically your dps is not really going to matter with your skills... but this is about 2 million to build, although you may need to move to named on some of the mods to make it fit based on your skills, which will move the price up a bit. Your role is to turn on the mwd, get close, scram and web while nosing from 5km... This build should be cap stable for you with the nos on. You will stop the enemy ship from warping away and slow it down all the while you orbit at 2000ms at 5km, which should give you a pretty nice speed tank.

Don't even bother tanking it, you have a frigate-sized tank on a cruiser-sized sig radius anyway so you're pretty much guaranteed to die as soon as anyone starts shooting at you, and you're far too slow to get into blaster range without dying. If you must PVP in a destroyer, use it for its intended role - a long range, high alpha frig-killer. Fit it cheap, hang back and try to take out those pesy little tacklers before they cause the big ships any real problems.

Long range weapons, damage & tracking mods, Sensor boosters. Hope noone hit you, and shoot frigates/pods.

Well if they are indeed flying mostly Cruisers and above, think tracking.

Definitely drop the destroyer, because it's simply too big and clumsy to be useful against cruisers, nevermind battleships.

Keep in mind that battleship guns in particular cannot track well, and to an extent cruiser guns are limited in this regard as well.

Fit out an Incursus or Tristan in a fairly simple PvP fit, but in terms of tactics -- APPROACH FAST. Do not fit long range guns, as cruisers and battleships will pick you off with ease. Fit blasters, a web, a scrambler, and whatever tank you can muster and throw yourself into the fray. Recommended builds as follows:

[Incursus, Low SP Incursus]

Damage Control II
100mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I

Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters
X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I

Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S

Hobgoblin I x1

Swap out low slots for tank/ gank as you wish, but if you are really going up against larger ships an active tank of any sort might be futile (since 1-2 shots will kill you).

Tristan:

[Tristan, Basic Tristan]

Damage Control II
200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
Adaptive Nano Plating II

J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters

Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I, Caldari Navy Gremlin Rocket
'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I, Caldari Navy Gremlin Rocket

Hobgoblin I x1

Again, play with the low slots as needed and swap T2 for T1 or whatever.

All in all though, the only way you are going to help your corp is to live, right? So get under their tracking and get some damage in there. Oh, and it's silly to say that a frigate with your skills cannot do enough DPS to affect a battleship -- fire away, you ARE hurting his tank!

arlo...

true some dmg is some dmg.. but the tristan makes a pretty good high speed tackler, and that might be very very usefull for his corp, in addition the build cost is way lower on what I posted. ESP if he is low skills, and short cash, which it appears as the biggest thing he has is a desty.

fit it with 4x tractor beams and 4x salvagers. that way when your corpies pop you can get their stuff and some nice t2 salvage.

edited: forgot the 4x expanded cargo holds and 3x salvage tackle rigs Razz

First FYP

Second, QFT

Don't let the naysayers get you down, if you have the skills, a destroyer can be an excellent option. Yes, they need some love from CCP but if you use them correctly, they can be a great asset to any fleet.
