I just noticed that since the beginning of July, I have been charged 1.25 'Overseas Transaction Fee' for every subscription payment on all 4 of my EVE accounts.

1) What is this for, since iv not been charged this previously in my 4 years of subscribing to EVE?
2) Why wasn't I advised about this charge before?
3) How do I not have to pay 5 per month, when im already paying 55?

Im not short of RL money, but the fact that I wasn't told about this extra charge kind of ****es me off.

Should ask that from your bank and not from CCP...

Definately looks like its a bank charge rather than a CCP charge, so i would contact your bank and find out whats going on, its possible that they add the 1.25 to any non GBP transactions either as a cover charge for currency conversion or as a way of making money off the transaction.

Its a lot better than form other banks and credit cards believe me.
This is essentially your welcome to Rip Off Britain. Enjoy!

1. CCP does not accept sterling, presumably as the small number of their customers who would pay with it would make converting it into euros a loss leader, essentially making the UK a loss leader. So they use the currency the majority of Europeans use: The Euro.

2. The payment method is clearly given in Euros. You should ask your bank why they charged you not lay the blame at the feet of CCP.

3. See point 1.

Now two things I think are unfair here:

1. Everyone in Asia has to use US dollars, which gives a significantly better exchange rate.

2. CCP does not allow anyone in Europe to pay using US dollars

PS: If you really are unhappy about it op, look at the Abbey National cc. They do not, I believe, charge currency conversion fees.

Or .. buy GTC's in dollars from official sources and play that way. I did some quick work and if you buy a 30 GTC from shattered crystal at 19.99 USD, plus currency convesion fee that works out at 13. So you might save .. a whopping .. 1.

However get a 60 day one and that's only 22.50 GBP for two months time. Much better than paying the 29 or so CCP want direct.

Which presumably is what all the macro and farmers do and are, thus, anoonymous and can come back indefinitely every time they are banned, making the RMT war much publicised by CCP here nothing more than PR spin?

-edit-

Santander Zero

- 0% foreign exchange fee
- 0% cash advance fee 1
- 0% for 3 months on purchases from date of account opening
- 0% for 12 months on balance transfers from date of account opening. 3% fee applies (minimum 5)2
- Typical 18.9% APR (variable)

Yes, this is definitely a bank thing and nothing to do with EVE - guessing you are with Abbey, since I have exactly the same charge added to my statement (name and amount) every time I used my card while on holiday (should probably have checked this beforehand tbh...) Smile

The way I got around that transaction charge that my bank also add was to use Paypal for the subscription instead. The only drawback is that it isn't automatically renewing but it's not much of an issue as I buy 6 months of subscription at a time.

Yes, Im with Abbey, and I pay my 4 accounts monthly by direct debit. I wasn't laying blame at CCP, I was just asking. Im gonna have to start buying GTC's or 6 month subscription I think.

My Citibank credit card tried that crap with me back in March. After elven years I canceled that card and went to a Capital One card without that transaction fee.

Again, depends on the bank. I use my debit card to pay for EVE. My bank, a local bank no one has probably heard of before, charges me $0.30 for international transactions on my debit card. Since EVE is the only international transaction I do on a regular basis it doesn't really bother me.

My bank does this to me every time I give money to CCP, in my case it's US $1.00.

I just pay by the year, save money that way anyway.

Any transaction fees aren't coming from CCP, they're added by your bank.

i use a visa debit card to pay for my eve time each month - my bank charges me 1.50 for the privelige of sending 15 to CCP each month.

Factor in the crappy exchange rate of the to the and it costs me around 15/month for one account...

The fact that my bank needs to charge me for this at all when we are part of the EU is what is rather annoying...

I recall my bank charging me international transaction fee around a year ago and stopped, they started again last month Rolling Eyes

Quote:
07/29/2009 CHECKCARD 0728 EVE ONLINE GLOBALCOLLEC... Bank Charge-$1.17
What is this fee?
An International Transaction Fee is assessed when you use your check card for purchases in foreign currency or in US dollars with a foreign merchant, including U.S. internet transactions with a foreign merchant. This fee is also assessed when you use your check card or ATM card to obtain foreign currency from an ATM. The International Transaction Fee is a percentage of the U.S. dollar amount of each purchase or ATM withdrawal.

I thought CCP had setup a merchant account in the US to charge US accounts but it seems they either disabled it or their webmaster accidentaly to the wrong merchant account

It is a bank charge, and I have had it happen to my accounts for the last two months. I didn't know about it either till I took a good look at my monthly statements because of a screw up on my account. Probably just another way for the banking industry to squeeze a few more cents out of all of us, but who saw it coming?

We do not charge any "Overseas Transaction Fee" or similar, so it looks like your bank is charging you extra for this. Sad

consider paying every 12 months instead, that way you minimize extra fees, and its cheaper too :)

Are you sure? I was charged just seven days ago for using my Lloyds TSB debit card in Sweden. The Lloyds TSB credit card has never had a charge though but it just has a habit of getting blocked for "suspicious activity" as soon as I use it abroad...

To avoid your card being blocked when you go abroad with it, inform your bank before you go that you will be going abroad. I found this out when I went into my bank and said "will I be able to use my card in this country" and they said "yes but you need to let us know first."

Just tell them where you are going and the dates and you will have no problems.

Can't speak for everyone, but earlier in the summer I received a notice from Bank of America saying that they were extending overseas transaction fees to include goods & services purchased overseas even if they were in US dollars. Before this, fee was only charged for things purchased in foreign currency. 2 out of 3 of my credit card companies have done this, so now I have to check if CCP takes Amex.

I noticed this too... The last year and half, no fees other than than 14.95 EVE Online... July and Aug this year, a .12 International Fee.

Called my bank, they said it's Visa's charge of 1% for Cross Border transactions. I asked the guy why it had never hit before he told me it was always supposed to be passed on to me, but for some reason it never was.

Don't calculate how much extra you pay by doing monthly instead of three or six month subs in addition to the bank charges. Wink
