The 3rd installment of the Tribes franchize is now in open public beta testing. It's officially free to play right now, once you sign up for a gamespy id and a fileplanet membership. I've been playing it all day yesterday, and it rocks.

Irrational games has done an outstanding job with this game. Using the Unreal game engine, the same one as powers UT2k3 and UT2k4, the game stays true to tribes fans while adding new elements. Many weapons and packs have changed, the vehicles are new and different, but the core experience remains the same. Nothing quite like mid-air'ing with the disc launcher. :p

I know there's a few tribers that also play eve; this is prolly OFN to all of them. There's a lot of people who enjoy a good first-person shooter game, and this is going to be one of the best of the year. Intense action and fast, fun gameplay make Tribes: Vengance a winner.

your like someone actually working for the peeps that make tribes trying to come up with quotes (albeit long ones) to put on the back of the box.

I used to post regularly on The Tribes community convinced Sierra to actually fix up Tribes 2 and make it a reasonable game, and later to produce a third Tribes game. Tribes 2 was a major disaster when it was released. It was mostly unplayable, it took another year of testing and patching to become a stable and playable game. That game community forced a major investment from a game production company.

I myself am a Tribes 2 (Renegades MOD) addict. I've been playing it for years and have been in the number one tribe on multiple Renegades ladders. I haven't been able to get the T:V install to actually play though (something about flickering load up screens and CTD's, as expected in a Beta). I'm definitely looking forward to it though.

And if anyone feels like a good old spawn duel in T2, convo me. YARRRR!!

ROFL. The only thing "True to tribes" about T:V is the spinfusor and jetpacks. The devs really ****ed up the game. Its basically UT2k4 with jetpacks. I mean, the devs even coded it as a mod of UT.

The game is tight and fast paced and much more like UT than Tribes. The maps are TINY. The only base assets are Deployable stations, inventory stations (which went back a step from Tribes 2), generator, and a useless pulse sensor array. The CC is non existant, thus making the sensor useless too. Deployables are: repair station, inventory station, mine, turret. And none of them are effective at all because mines are big and easy to avoid, and by the time you run to an inventory or repair station, you couldve made it to your base and back (let me reiterate how incredibly tiny the maps are compared to those of t2). Vehicles are worthless, because they dont make transportation faster at all and are pretty easy to take out. The bomber/gunship is extremely unbalanced. The controls are very awkward and clunky. Weapons are unbalanced - the only weapon worth using is the spinfusor. If you are in med armor, you might want to carry the bukler and try to kill with that, and that can be some fun. Grenade launcher is the same as the mortar, only its a different color trail and slightly less damage. Mortar/nade launcher are only good for killing the generator/sensor though, or for launcher indoors and killing those at the inv stations. Their are a grand total of four, yes four, packs in the game: energy, repair, speed, shield.

This game is NOT tribes. At all. Its UT2k4 with jetpacks. Im actually a little embarassed that I was looking forward to this game at one point. Whatever the devs did, they did it wrong, because this game is not tribes. I may be a little hard on the game, but Im not happy that the new devs turned my favorite FPS into just another FPS.

I agree. It's pants. The fact you can't cloak any more is enough even without all the other downfalls. With all the other team-based vehicle games coming out nowadays, you would have thought intelligent Tribes developers would have taken what's good about tribes and improved on it. That would be the strategy and base-building part. But no. To be honest I'm going to wait for either Battlefield 2 or Starwars Battlegrounds for my online vehicle game. This is made worse because I was 'waiting' for Tribes: Vengeance :/

The way you repair buildings now just sums it all up. Sad

Never played T1 much, but was a huge fan of T2. Played T:V a week or so ago, and uninstalled it almost straight away - it feels more like a UT2004 mod than a Tribes game. The vehicles are terrible, and the jetpack has been completely nooborized - you can move in the air without even jetting, making it considerably easier to master. The whole game just seems to have been dumbed down to appeal to a large audience, and all the art of Tribes 2 has been thrown out of the window. Crying or Very sad

So I don't have any takers for a Tribes 2 duel? If so, contact me on AIM (screen name is "hexy").

I guess I'll just have to to attach spinfusors to my Taranis.

(This post was a polite bump.)

You weren't able to cloak in base tribes either...that was modded in later on (I think renegade was the first to do it)

I loved Tribes and played a lot of both Starsiege and Tribes 2 (Shrike crashing for life).

I'm actually enjoying Vengeance, I don't mind how they've thrown out wall turrets and other forms of automated defence, it means you have to actually defend now. They've turned the laser rifle into a defence gun too with only giving it ten shots. I find it to be too slow especially with how fast people can move with jets and skis.

The mines, while they're big I've noticed people moving fast tend not to notice as they ski into one.

I heard there's much bigger maps in the retail version. Which is a great thing. One of my friends and I had a dual in the assault frigates on WinterLake, trying to kill each other with the mortar bombs it fires. Pretty funny.

The game however calls someone getting killed by a vehicle as a suicide rather than a kill for you, which is slightly blah but oh well. Should be fixed retail.

So there's no cloak and shocklance, pretty much ending the inflitrator and the engineer is slightly dead with the new repairing. But I find it to be closer to Starsiege than Tribes 2 so players of T2 won't like it.

A lot are complaining about how fast heavy armour can move, then they complain that they can defend too well with fusion mortars, the official forums are funny as its just filled with people *****ing rather than playing.

Either way, open beta is free so why not give it a try and see what you think?
