Im new to all this mess and was just wondering what a good fitting for a Heron might be. I want to do some scouting/exploring type stuff and noticed in several places that people mentioned the Heron. There doesn't seem to be a good way to search for information on these forums or at least I don't know what it is if there is one. Any help is appreciated.

A heron is a scanner ship and pretty much only a scanner ship. You can't really attempt to do too much else with it...and exploration complexes will have to be done with another ship (Although you can naturally use the heron to scan them in the first place).

The Heron is a t1 astrometrics frigate. For real scouting in hostile territory you want a Buzzard, a covert ops frigate.

Fitting a scan ship is pretty simple. My covert ops has a covert ops cloak (Warp while cloaked, no penalty. No other cloak is close to as good), a sisters expanded probe launcher, an afterburner, 3 small shield extenders, and 3 inertia stabilizers.

You wont be able to fit a covert ops cloak until you get a buzzard. The rest of the fit could be very roughly similar on your ship...basically, it's just a buffer tank to stay alive if I warp into danger (as I do a lot of probing in wormhole space, where sleepers can BBQ you fast), and the inertia stabs to warp around fast. Gravity Capacitor rigs are a few mil a piece and help a lot with scanning if you can afford them. A sisters (Faction) probe launcher with faction probes helps as well, although that's also expensive so I wouldn't bother until you get some more spare cash.

1: do not rig the heron!

2: Basic fitting a friend sent me (note with his skills used for fitting..)

[Heron]
Nanofiber Internal Structure II

Survey Scanner II
Small Capacitor Battery II
Small Capacitor Battery II

Salvager I
Core Probe Launcher I

As he put it, your main focus for the t1 is likely to be hunting exploration sites in high security space... focus mainly on the grav (hidden belt) ones. The cap batteries are due to the heron's low warp distance...

It's a decent ship and tight fit.. to fit the combat scan probe you will likely have to drop the nanofiber for a co-processor II

Why? Unless you're very close to getting a covops, I don't see why not.

Eh. If you have the means to run them, you could do lowsec as well, although you'd obviously need to be careful.

well I used something like that fit for a while, but as for rigs..

I would say check contracts vs buying the rigs.

You can usually find one that is rigged for less than the market value.

rigs on t1 ships are usually iffy things... a rigged one you definitely will want to minimize risk to it.
