I must say I was disappointed with the retail box release last week.

I am new to the game (as in this past Friday) and understand that it has a steep learning curve so I'll reserve judgment on game play atm.

I first got seriously interested a few weeks ago. That's when I found out about the retail dvd box release. So I figured I would read up and wait a little. Seemed like a good deal...client, 60 days play time, career guide, ship, other little goodies...

It was basically a waste of a dvd and packaging. The client wouldn't load from the dvd, or if it did the almost 3 hour "patch" download made it seem like the dvd was a waste. I was under the impression I would load it up and be ready to play right away (I was trying to avoid the long download time).

The "career Guide" was a download no actual physical book which was very deceiving.

I am too new to the game to comment on any of the other "boxed" goodies.

Overall I hope the game support is better than the deceptive packaging and advertising.

Welcome to EVE, and yes I agree, CCP made a mistake doing what they did.

It would have been better to include a single "business card" type thing in the package with the code that would allow one to download the new client, get a free ship, and whatever else they have included in the "package." And, finally, instead of the costs incurred, spend all that cash on an advertising campaign on TV/Radio whatever.

Hope you will stay.

Best of luck.

Wow. As a veteran player I have to say that's just really embarrassing and disappointing. The guide isn't even an actual physical book? Pathetic.

As for the download stuff, yeah, buying the box to avoid having to download the game is a total waste of effort.

The career guide is a download? That's pretty lame. Sounds like either CCP or Atari marketing really dropped the ball. People much prefer tangible items.

The other problem was that they had to print up all the DVDs like months ago to get them ready for shipment. However, the Apocrypha patch was being worked on up until its actual release on Tuesday. That creates more problems because people don't want to buy a game just to have to do a 1.5-2 gig download to patch.

Not sure what the option would be. Clearly they put a lot of emphasis into tying the box release to the Apocrypha release. However, CCP's development cycle is very fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. I think it's that Icelandic fishermen tradition in their blood.

I've not seen the retail box yet, however it sounds like a complete letdown, I dunno if I'll get one anymore tbh, depends on the price of a gtc against the price of the retail box when I need more game time :P CCP you should be ashamed to release such a shoddy attempt of a retail boxed game :S

omg a boxxy!!

Seriousness: EVE is going to be chalk full of disappointments, and thats the fun part. Had me hooked for over 2 years now =D

edit: I keep thinking about this lack of paper book to come with the box. This is seriously disappointing, I was thinking of buying the box for novelty effect, but not now. =(

this forum agreed new box player wernt to be called boxxys

i can see that getting actually on to the game has been a challange but once you in my god i hope you planned 2 years off, been playing for 3 years and there no game that has the auxillerating PVP or the shinest of ships and the pure astethic pvp retail that the game has, unlike in WOW where the death knight everyone can have , with eve new t3 ships no one can haz as none have been made

and welcome to the forums... prepare to be judged

The new boxed product does sound a little disappointing Sad

I hope you stick around though, as a veteran I can honestly say that beyond the near-vertical learning curve lies a brilliant sandbox MMO.

A brutal and harsh place to live but given a bit of patience it can be very rewarding. Of all the MMO's I've tried this is the only one that I keep coming back to.

I couldn't disagree more. As a player of three years, the booklet that came with the box is more of a reference then a guide. The real player guide is in-game and is absolutely fantastic. I bought the box as a souvenir but decided to create a new character to see what it was like. Everything was explained very well step-by-step, and not just giving the character lots of skill books all at once without any clue on what they were. A very good job by CCP on their part with trying to flatten the steep learning curve.

In the defense of the career guide it has a lot of links within its little digital pages to further expand on the subjects its trying to review... something a paperback copy obviously would be incapable of doing.

Had a nose in a game store to see what was actually in the box, pretty poor CCP, pretty poor. Damn Atari too.

Damh, no actual printed career guide? CCP really cheaped out there, along with CrapTari.

Really, they should of included some printed maps, a Beginners Book, and maybe a 10 Mil Isk package so the newbie can get their feet wet without grinding so much.

Whats the point of getting the box if there's no novelty jumping p e n i s?

what would a newbie do with 10 mill? they already get free frigates from the tutorial missions along with cash and help on the skillbooks.

I don't think I've ever played an mmo where you didn't have to do lots of patching after installing from the boxed version tbh.

the unfortunite thing about eve is that its allwayse been a primarly online distrobution method...
the problem with physically pressing stuff is it takes a loooong time (thank goodness its not a counsole game, that takes even longer)....

when theese two things collide your allwayse going to end up with a cop out on the disk. same with most mmo's tbh, because of the patch system, theres allwayse more to download - hell i started playing eve last year by putting in the 2003 cd-rom version... that took a while to catch up!

Op is 0/10

Far too many hot topic bits tossed into his very first thread that a new player who has never been to the forums and seen all the epic box set whinage would have no clue about. Also nearly every mmo has a huge gigabyte or greater download when installed off of a dvd as by the time the dvd is printed there is usually and expansion or two already live. So in conclusion to the op: Lrn 2 Chav. ugh

Then it would be worth it for the game time alone.

As for patching, that's normal. Go buy WoW on DVD and install it, see how many hours you have to spend downloading several gigs of patches there aswell. In a dynamic MMO, getting a completely updated DVD on the market is close to impossible. Blizzard is in a league of their own however. Even if you download the full client from their website it is still unpatched, and you have to spend a day downloading 20gb of patches after installing.

As for the other stuff, I agree it sounds pretty pathetic tbh. CCP should have done a better job... Collectors Edition with the Art-book and a Shipmodel would be awesome. And I'd happily pay $200 for it.

Well considering it was never marketed as a special edition box for established players and only put out in retail to get a slice of the fairly considerable retail gaming demographic who normally wouldn't frequent gaming sites or have magazine subscriptions I'd say you got what you paid for. Wink

So I suppose the big SPECIAL EDITION on the box is there for show?

Even so, its a pretty poor box period, special or not. I can't see how a new player would like it at all.

Interesting. Just checked out the new cover and it is plastered right across the top. Well I guess technically the gold tinted gallente shuttle makes it special. Razz

Tbh who cares about the box or whats in it. A new player will fall in love with eve the game and not some cheap shineys stuck in the box to entice them to log into this awesome alternate life in the first place. ugh
