Well I for one am very ****ed off with CCP and EVE and it is all because of the sound engine. I'm making a list here of everything wrong with it that I've noticed:

1. Can't hear a damned thing when zoomed out, still.

2. Hardeners hogging sound channels in space, drowning out all other sounds. Very lucky to hear a launcher firing every couple of minutes, and not a damn noise when being pummeled by hundreds of enemy missiles and guns (yeah, what?)

3. Very loud station sounds, in Amarr stations at least.

4. New and obnoxious noises from NPC ships when close-up. You know, this was acceptable to hear for a few seconds when passing through a stargate... but this is crap. (This noise comes from stations now as well. Terrible.)

5. New bugs with the jukebox. Sound starts with "STOP" selected, and must be started automatically. Most tracks hang when finished, leaving you in utter silence. At least these are obvious bugs, which might be fixed... but it seems like every other problem with the sound is intended Rolling Eyes

6. Some of the most important sounds to hear, like stargates and cloaking devices are barely audible.

7. Only semi related but where is the sound blog we were supposed to get?

I honestly didn't think the sound could ever end up worse than what they did to it with Apoc. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with the awful state the sound is in at this point. CCP is getting nothing but negative word of mouth from me until it's fixed, period.

To the smartasses: I will not play a game without sound. It is just as much of an important part of the experience as the graphic presentation, if not more. I will prefer to not play a game if the sound is awful and broken.

Quoting this.

Regarding the sound blog; there WAS a very short one, probably buried deep now.

I just started EVE a few days ago again. I have a brand new computer, every driver is uptodate, I can play any other game (Modern Warfare 2, Aion, Dragon Age Origns) without any issues at all. Eve looks great, but the sound is TERRIBLE. It worked great the first 4-5 days on my integrated Realtec sound hardware. It started messing up, just as the quoted poster describes, so slapped in a soundblaster X-Fi Fataily card and that didn't fix the issue.

Even logging in that ring that increases in pitch as the game first loads doesn't play. There is no beep when opening something via double click.

I uninstalled and reinstalled EVE, making sure that all the files were deleted off my comp. The sound was still not working.

I messed with windows and changed my speaker settings to quadraphonic from 5.1 (I have Logitech Z-5500)and changed the effect setting to Stereo x2 and I can hear everything now. The radio white noise is rather loud and the overall sound quality feels diminished. =(

Just to chime in with everyone else, as well as keeping the thread alive, I am much annoyed with the new sound setup as well. I am not going to regurgitate all the complaints, as I have the same and not much new to add, but I will say that while some complain about the station and NPC radio chatter, I kind of like it. It adds ambiance as far as I am concerned. However, the missing turret and missile sounds are annoying as all get out. Rather than spend time on the ambient sound, they really needed to fix the turret/missile sounds, as that is more important to the day to day activities than the radio chatter.

I've also noticed that the sound levels appear to change during a battle situation. Sometimes my guns are loud as hell and others they are so quiet and others inaudible when at the same distance visually to my ship. In battles i oftentimes disable audio and reenable the audio to at least have some semblance of audio. This helps but still a majority of sounds are still missing.

Since Dominion I keep only UI sounds because all the rest is just random crap now. Not even the Jukebox works correctly anymore.

Just rip out this new sound engine and start from scratch with one that actually works...

Seriously, I'm watching 3 ships fight, I'm zoomed in close, but there's no sound? (maybe 1 missile hit every 30 seconds or so). This needs to be a bigger priority, sound is important for immersion!

Same issues here. 5.1 sound setup is unstable as well.

It is a complete nonsense that we get absolutely no information on the development regarding these SIGNIFICANT issues.

Realtek HD sound as well.

For the record, is anyone else having issues d/l'ing the newest Realtek audio codecs? I've been trying and I'm getting d/l speeds in the single KB/s range from North America. And I've tried d/l'ing them 3 times now and I keep getting corrupted .exe

I am thankfull that CCP are finally addressing the problematic/laggy sound engine, but the way it is right now is a step down. They should have included an option to stick with the old engine for now. Can that be added in?

I'm just returning to the game after a several month break. I completely skipped apocrypha, but now I'm greeted with boring new sound effects in an engine that doesn't work. They sound too cartoony to me. I liked the old one's better and I'd probably use the old sounds if they had an option for it.

When Trinity was released there was the option to use the new graphics or the "classic" style ( is that still there?). It's things like this that make a company like CCP succeed. When Trinity came out my computer couldn't run the new graphics and I was worried I would be left out, but they allowed for a way for me to keep playing.

We are not allowed to discuss sound in 'General Discussion' or 'Features and Ideas'. I guess it's official then; CCP and their forum mods acknowledge that the sound is borked and needs fixing Rolling Eyes

I've got the same problems as everyone else here, both with built in sound card ADI 1988B (Product page) and Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer (Product page). Both with latest stable drivers. I've tried Creative ALchemy with EVE-fix (check post #3), for the Creative card to enable HW acc but that didn't make a difference either. No other games/apps has these issues.

Some of the issues that has occured:
  • Randomly missing sound

  • High sound differences in general

  • One in ten turrets/missiles going off is making a sound

  • Lag in turret/explosion and other effects when they're there

  • Deafening "skilltraining complete" message

(Camera distance to ship doesn't make a diff with these issues. Also occurances are higher when there is more things going on (like more ships in fight))

DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Maybe a change to OpenAL would solve som issues as DirectX no longer supports hardware acceleration since Vista and DX 10.

I really would appreciate to have working sound. My EVE experience is only at 50% without it.

Sound is just horrible,im sorry, but it is shthouse right now. And if it does work it doesn't really fit the graphics. It just so outdated compared to the rest of the game.
Its like watching Star Wars with the soundtrack and sound fx in MIDI format.
I know many people in EVE don't give a crap, but some of us do like some sounds with our scifi, and for us it is a big part of the scifi rpg experience.
Please, give sound the same love and attention to detail as you do with graphics, the game deserves it.

Sound was fine pre-Apocrypha, seriously, NOTHING has been gained at all, the only new "feature" that was introduced was this sound relative to distance, the only minor mistake is that nearly ALL explosions and impacts and enemy fire take place from a long distance, so in effect CCP silenced EVE.

I think it was nice that CCP Baldur gave us a blog :
http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=685

"The argument of having the sounds stay with the ship regardless of camera position has never been part of the plan. However, it's an interesting idea and we have started looking at this idea from different angles - we will post some ideas here later." was good to hear

But still no acknowledgment of the many bugs and that many people don't have working sound since Apocrypha.

Is it really too much to ask to just be able to hear the freaking sounds?

Turn on my jukebox when I log in like it used to be, and make all sounds play if I have the damned slider turned up.

You can get to fixing the obnoxious noises like station sounds and NPC chatter later. But for the love of god, fix basic sound functions!

The sound was bad enough during Apoc, but at least the damn Jukebox worked. But now they've gone and broken that too. I mostly play EVE in silence now since I'm sick of having to manually tell the jukebox to play the next song every 3 minutes.

Hehe I asked the same question in General, these are my findings :

I narrowed down my problems to the following :
( I may have other problems, but these are the most obvious to me )

- Turrets ( Artillery ), Missile launchers and enemy fire sound effects stop working after a few minutes when zoomed in on my ship. I get them back when disabling and re-enabling sound in the ingame menu. Other sound effects like targetting, warping, etc, don't have issues.
- When zoomed out to the point where I no longer hear my sensor booster and tracking enhancer, then the turrets, launchers and enemy fire sound effects keep working, altho if I go too far away from my ship I can no longer hear incomming lasers. So I assume that the sensor booster and tracking enhancer overwrite my turret, launcher and enemy fire sounds.
- When mission specific music is playing ( like when jumping into a mission thru a gate ), all module effects disapear. I can get them back when I just start playing the jukebox music again. Targetting and other sound effects keep working.
- Occasional crackling/popping noises.

So far I have tried the following :

- Updated everything ( Bios, Windows, Drivers, etc )
- Removed EVE Online including cache and settings.
- Completely reinstalled OS
- And thus also completely reinstalled EVE
- Windows XP, Vista, 7
- Disabled advanced, non-essential, features for X-FI ( both on the creative software as the XP and Win7 settings ).
- Ingame settings
- Windowed and fullscreen mode
- 1 and 2 clients
- Zooming further away from my ship : sortoff a workaround
- Disabling and re-enabling sound : fix for a few minutes

- Tried following soundcards :
( Disabled onboard sound in bios when trying other sound devices )

Onboard Soundmax HD
Logitech USB headset
Soundblaster X-fi music
Soundblaster X-fi gamer

- In combination with following systems :

Asus Striker II Extreme mobo
nForce 790i
Core2Quad Q9550
Gefore GTX285 1GB
Raptors in Raid-0

Asus Striker Extreme mobo
nForce 680i
Qore2Quad 6600
Geforce 8800GTS 512MB

Asus P5Q Motherboard
Intel P45 Chipset
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 and Q9550

yeah it did, everything worked fine before apochypha. we even had the option to use the old client with lower graphics, which was a nice option to have considering some of us still have relics lying around.

what i'd love to see is an option for the old sound system back... but i already said that plenty of times. till then, i'll be mostly play some other games.

PS. CCP, atleast give us a PC configuration you use in your sound labs/testing labs/whatever so we know what "working as intended" is really all about, we may grow to like it.

at least have the decency to provide us a working PC specification for your game (and i mean, all features "working as intended"), cos you're doing a hell of a job ignoring (i may say,one of) the biggest thread so far in this section.
