I am currently at Uni doing Marine Biology in Plymouth, UK. My coursemate came across this in his perusings of the internets.

To summarise, PETA think that renaming fish to 'sea kittens' would decrease fishing, sorry 'hunting and killing sea kittens'. And I thought that I had seen limits of human stupidity, some of which is here.

Seriously now, have a look at some of the 'facts' about 'sea kittens' on the 'About our campaign' page, it makes me so angry to see people could actually come up with this stuff!

PETA instantly crap up any cause they lend their "support" to, drowning out any valid concerns about overfishing and sustainability of fishing communities with their PETA brand Stupid.

They only make things worse.

Yeah.

They are so unbelievably and god-awfully bad and downright lunatics that I am beginning to think they are really shills for the meat/fur industry. Their cringe inducing ranting just shuts down anyone who might begin to listen to some legitimate issues.

Tin foil hattery? Maybe but c'mon...just how ******ed can these guys get and still be considered serious by anyone?

The general population is, on average, stupid. So the best way to gain support is to do stupid stuff!

Trying to be smart about things, trying to get a discussion going with rational facts is the DUMB way of doing things since people are idiots. So, if you're smart and want more power/coverage, act stupid.

I think too much was when they tried to convince Ben and Jerry's to make ice cream with human breast milk instead of cow milk.

trust me, it was pretty nasty. they raised the question of where that amount of breast milk would come from, and one of the replies was "crack *****s". ugh not sure if I would even want to go anywhere near the ice cream aisle if they implemented it.

ontopic" sea kittens are freakin delicious. especially at Red Lobster, where they give you Cheddar Bay Biscuits <3

MMMM...Sea kitten legs with butter...or lemon juice..with a tall glass of iced tea.. <3 <3 <3

That is probably the winner. Still, PETA never fails. One of my favorites was them trying to get the Green Bay Packers (an American pro football team) to change their name since it was a reference to meat packing (honestly it never even occurred to me but I assumed it was pickle packing since they wear green uniforms).

Quote:
Green Bay, Wisconsin, June 27, 2000 -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a well-known animal rights group, has submitted a letter to the Green Bay Packers, urging the storied football franchise to change its name. The organization, speaking through its "Vegetarian Campaign Coordinator," called for the Club to cease using the moniker because it is a reference to slaughterhouse meat packers and promotes animal violence.

As solutions, PETA served up two alternative names for the Club. The suggestions are either the Green Bay "Pickers", which would be seen as a reference to the picking of fruits, vegetables and other crops; or the Green Bay "Six-Packers", seemingly as an homage to Wisconsin's brewing heritage.

In response, the Club indicated that the organization has been known as the Green Bay Packers since 1919, and there have never been any plans to change the name.

hmm. On the subject of name changes, they asked a few towns and cities to change their name. A place called Hamburg in the US, they asked to change to Veggieburg. ugh
