Covert ops are the current way to find exploration sites.
No covert ops can actually complete an exploration site though. Even if its just a hacking/archeology/salvage site, you need another ship to kill/tank the rat spawns.

I am well aware of what exploration consists of, it is my primary source of income. I was suggesting that the somewhat laughable (once in a combat ship) rat spawns in hack/arch/sal sites could be replaced with some more interesting challenge that would allow a non-combat ship (eg: covert ops) to complete the sites alone. I am not sure what that challenge would be, I was just musing about a consideration I have had in the past related to the discussion of needing a combat ready exploration ship.

Thats akin to what I'm saying, that if your just going to lump in necessary combat then it cheapens the whole experience and makes it less of a viable carreer in its own right.

Let Exploration have its own ship, its own mechanics, its own play style and its own challenges.

IMHO planets asteroid belts moons and everything else shouldn't even show up on your overview in exploration systems, you should have to find them. If it truly is an uncharted system then you can build a game experience around EXPLORING it.

Yeah, I would say I largely agree with you. I am just saying the covert ops can be our exploration ship. The only reason to need a separate exploration ship class is the combat inherent in exploration sites.

If there were some mechanic beyond combat, covert ops may be fine (and if they are not, the combat bonuses could easily be changed to make them fit that mechanic).

It is probably fair to give planets on the overview. The onboard scanner can do a lot of things, and I bet planets are big enough to find without straining your system. Besides, you need somewhere to start when exploring, some fixed point in space to orient by.

At the moment i use a dominix as exploration vessel.

The only reson, is that covert ops are paper thin, and go "poof".

I think i lost 5 or 6 fully rigged/fitted cov. ops due to either lag or "sudden death" jumpin locations.

So, it may be slower, but i have yet to loose a domi when exploring - but of cause, i would buy a dedicated exploration vessel, as long as it's not a frig sized thing again!

Most of those have relatively high mass, which won't interact well with the wormhole mechanic unless you completely take all the teeth out of the wormhole mechanic to begin with.

I think Marauders ARE the exploration ships. Battleship mass. Free high slots for utility like salvagers and probe launchers. Huge cargohold to bring a lot of ammo in, and carry a lot of loot out. Reduced ammo consumption.

Also, who says you have to leave using the wormhole you came in through? Shove a carrier through, loot everything that isn't nailed down until a new wormhole pops up, then go to another system and do it again. It isn't like your going to get hot dropped. A competent gang can kill a carrier without support, but a competent carrier can kill a gang without support too. Sooner or later you will pop back out into non-wormhole space after a long trip, like you were the battlestar galactic or something. Have your buddies store their ship in the hanger and fly their pods through to save mass. Carriers only have like 10x the mass of a non-plated battleship. Also, how awesome would it be for one exploration gang with a carrier to bump into another exploration gang with a carrier. That would be an epic fight.

You can't run a mining op in a wormhole system now can you? Can't store your ore in a station in system. A having haulers constantly jumping in and out of the worm hole would likely run it out of mass capacity real fast. Oh, and for the record, an Orca has 2.5x the mass of a non-plated battleship, and has a ship hanger so the rest of the gang could pod through to save mass.

There are plenty of options in game already. Maybe you should wait until you see how they work, or don't work, before you go running off to the drawing board demanding something new.
