Mining Veldspar is not very exciting. I have two accounts, one is a barge miner and the other account flies a shield tanked & heavy missile fitted Caracal (expendable ship, don't care if I lose it). Barring player pirates, will a nicely fitted Caracal fend off 0.0 rats?

If not, is Hed and Hemo worth mining over Veld if I can find it in a 0.2 or 0.3?

Yes its well worth mining in 0.0 depending on the ore available and how easy it is to get to market. As for what type of ship to tank, it depends on the rats your tanking. But a caracal with the right hardners and an afterburner should be able to tank them. Dont forget though that you only want to tank, not shoot em. if you shoot em, then they will come back and stronger.

Thanks for the reply. Does Hed and Hemo pay better than Veldspar?

honestly im not sure, would have thought so. though the risk v reward probably makes it less appealing.

No, hemo is about half, and hed a bit more than half the value of veld atm.
This is only looking at m3/hour, then you have to consider how much harder it would be to get the ore to high sec for refining/selling.

Except for ore only found in 0.0 veld is worth more, both m3/hour and ofc risk-wise.

with the current prices of trit on a huge price spike and high level minerals ie zyd and meg prices comparatively in the toilet (as of jita this morning) staying in empire mining veld is going to be as if not more profitable.

And I wish there was something that could be done about this. It is such a shame that the most profitable mining to be done right now (barring distant 0.0 ores) is veldspar. It would be nice to see some of the low-sec ores worth more then veldspar. Any ideas on how CCP could make that happen (like eliminating rats dropping so much loot that refining from loot makes mining less valuable).

If you or a friend have the skills, don't rule out exploration grav sites. You may as well force the pirates and roaming gangs to search for you.

Mining is mining. doesn't matter where; it's more dangerous in 0.0 then empire for mining but you will be just as bored mining veld in 0.0 as anywhere else. Mining is on it's surface a boring activity.

Try to find a 0.0 alliance that has mining ops. I joined one not so far back and its been a blast. In the ideal world a miner should never be unable find work hehe.

I would say you really need a Hulk though, Im sure you can mine in any ship but if you plan on long term the hulk is a lot more resilient. Of course you could mine with a battleship Razz
