I'm very proud to announce the Dynasty Banking Foundation.

Every 3 months, we at Dynasty Banking will ask our account holders to nominate useful EVE tools, information sources and services, and then we will let account holders vote on the top 12 nominees. The tool, information source or service that gets the most votes will get a prize of 240 million ISK. Second place gets 120 million ISK, and third place gets 40 million ISK.

First place also gets excluded from nomination for the next two cycles, and second place gets excluded from nomination for the following cycle. The reason for this is that we want different items to be able to win, instead of the same item winning first place again and again and again. It's like, if you've won the first prize once, then a big congratulations to you, now please move aside so that someone else can win next time around.

If you wish to vote, or nominate, or both, and you don't have an account with us, you can simply open one, by sending ISK to one of our tellers (Manalapan or Iknota), then they'll EVEmail you with your account information, including your initial (temporary) password. Any amount, even 0.01 ISK, will suffice.

We want you to vote, and to nominate; this is a democratic project. As for nominations, all personal account holders can nominate two items, and it is a very good thing to nominate ones that have already been nominated by others, because only the top 12 nominees, those that gets nominated the most, gets to be on the actual poll. As for the poll, you get one vote only.

Eligible items are interactive tools and non-interactive tools, as well as non-tool-like sources of information, and individuals and groups who teach and assist other players (especially new players). An interactive tool would be something like EVEmon or EVE Fitting Tool. A non-interactive tool would be something like the Jita Mineral Index or EVE Dashboard. A source of information is a more or less static document or website, such as Halada's Mining Guide or any publically accessible wiki specific to EVE. An individual or group would be something like EVE University, or a very helpful person in the "Help" chat channel or the "EVE New Citizens Q&A" Forum, as long as they do the teaching or answering largely or completely out of charity, and not primarily as an attempt to recruit long-term members.

Services that charge more-than-minimal ISK fees are not eligible.

I'm in charge of approving and rejecting nominations, but I may need the help of the EVE community, when it comes to non-Windows software. Software for alternative operating systems is eminently eligible for nomination, but in such cases I'll need testimonials from users that they actually do work, e.g. in Mac OS or Linux or whatever. They don't have to work flawlessly, or even be largely bug-free. They just have to perform work that at least one user considers to be marginally useful and pertinent to some aspect of EVE.

In general, my attitude is that I'll accept pretty much anything. I will only reject a nomination if there's a really good reason for it.

Frequently Asked questions to follow in the next post.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do I cast my nomination?
A: Log into your Dynasty Banking account, and go to the Topic Ideas located at the very bottom of the menu, and there you will see a topic for the Dynasty Banking Foundation. Here you simply fill in the name of your nomination and a brief description or link about your nomination in their respective areas, click submit and you will have sent your nomination. Repeat as necessary for your second nomination.

Q: When can I cast my nomination? When can I vote?
A: The nominations period is from Friday the 12th of December to Wednesday the 24th of December, and after that you can vote, from Tursday the 25th of December to Wednesday the 31st of December. The winner will be announced on the 2nd of January 2009.

Q: What about repeat nominations under different names, say EFT versus Eve Fitting Tool? How will you handle those?
A: All nominations are handled by myself and the other members of Dynasty Banking so at to prevent incidents like these from causing problems for the process. Some of the things we will do are to combine similar but differently worded nominations, and also in cases of doubt we will research nominations for validity.

Q: Is this a new idea? I seem to recall having read about a somewhat similar project, in one of the CCP forums, almost a year ago?
A: It is in fact an old idea of mine, and I wrote a suggestion in Features & Ideas, that is somewhat similar to this, a year ago or so. Early 2008 or last quarter of 2007, IIRC. You can try searching for it if you want, although I've started a lot of idea threads these two years.

Q: What about rejected nominations? I only have two shots, I don't want to waste them on something that has already been deemed non-eligible.
A: We'll maintain a list of frequently-suggestioned-but-rejected items, along with the reason for the rejection. I doubt we'll maintain a complete list of all rejected items, because some nominations will be frivolous; imagine someone nominating "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy"; we will, however, have a list of common nominations, and we reserve the right to change our policy, so that something that we rejected this cycle might not be rejected next cycle. Note that there will be no sanctions against account holders who suggest frivolous or otherwise non-eligible items. We don't want anything to discourage you from nominating. We want as much participation as possible, so don't hold back.

Q: Why only post here in the Events forum? Why not post in many of CCP's different sub-forums?
A: We don't want to be spammers. We'd much rather have you, the public, do the spamming for us. Please talk about, and post about, this project, as much as you can, as far as your enthusiasm will take you. This will increases the number of votes and nominators making the foundation more successful, and thus more beneficial to the greater EVE community.

Q: Four cycles a year, 400 million ISK in the prize kitty every cycle?
A: Probably. We might do more or less cycles per year, and we might change the prize amount, or the prize ratios, or the exclusion terms. The exact terms, outlined in this post, are for the first cycle only. Later cycles may have different terms.

If there are any questions pertinent to the Foundation, feel free to ask them in this thread.

Come on guys, we need more nominations.

I'll also declare one of the nominations invalid: Someone nominated Dynasty Banking, but sadly we're not eligible, since we are a profit-oriented business, whose main purpose is to earn a salary for our directors and our employees.

List of ineligible items
Dynasty Banking
Any other in-game bank
Any other profit-oriented corporation selling stocks, share or bonds (basically anything starting with an IPO, or asking you to invest)

We discussed the issue internally in the bank, in preparation for the Foundation launch, and stock exchanges that charge a minimal handling fee are eligible for nomination.

edit: tried to fix my list.
edit part deux: gave up on having a prettily formatted list, since I can't figure out how it works.

bumping...

We need more nominations. Anyone with an account at Dynasty Banking can nomiate.

So far, over half the nominations have been for the usual suspects. They will probably end up winning the big prizes this time around, but that's exactly why I invented the Winner's Exclusion Principle; second time around, probably in March, someone else is guaranteed the chance to win.

Just go to our website and read the instructions for how to set up an account (it's very easy), then you can do your best to help your favourite EVE application or information source get a part of the 400 million ISK prize money.

The nomination period ends on the 24th. From the 25th account holders get to vote among the top 12 nominees.

13 nominations so far.

edit: fixed the URL (this forum system is not intuitive!)

The nomination period ends in a little more than 24 hours. I'll close the system for nominations manually tomorrow, at or after midnight EU time (which is 23.00 EVE time).

13 nominations so far. Why not nominate your favourite application, and help reward the creator with a 1st prize of 240 million ISK?

The next post from me will be when I announce that nominations are closed, unless a problem crops up.

I've closed for new nominations. We got 15 in total, of which 1 is invalid (Dynasty Bank is a for-profit operation and therefore ineligible). I haven't checked the 2 newest ones but they are probably okay.

It is past midnight here in Europe, but about 10-12 hours from now I'll post a list of all nomiated items (with many repeat nominatins, all eligible nomiated items will go on the voting list) and set about starting the poll to find the winner.

Thanks for the interest you've shown in the project so far! I've long felt that tool-makers needed some reward for the work they do, and you, the public, is helping by nominating and voting.

Okay, I've counted the nomination votes.

This had to be done manually since the nomination process lets the user type whatever he or she thinks, thus we got both EFT and Eve Fitting Tool which obviously have to be manually added together as one entry, for the purpose of counting.

These are the eligible items, and they received a total of 14 nominations. The 15th nomination went to Dynasty Banking, i.e. us, and while we're very grateful for that, we aren't eligible for the Dynasty Banking Foundation Prize because we're a profit operation. We do give high interests, but we aren't doing it out of charity. Even our highest interest CDs (Certificates-of-Deposit) are profitable to us.

EFT
EveMon
IGB POS Planner
EVE Central
EVE Commander
EMMA

The voting interface, once it is up, will provide very basic information about what each tool is and does, in case you are curious whether it might be useful for you.

(Not surprisingly EFT and Evemon received the most nominations.)

I've tried creating a new poll to let you, our account holders, determine the winner, but the web interface was a bit glitchy so I've delegated that task to our internal tech support guy, and since he's in an American time zone, it may be a few hours before the poll is up.

Keep in mind, we're talking 400 million ISK in prize money this time. 240 million ISK to the winner (and exclusion from the next two cycles, i.e. he can't win anything in March or June), 120 million ISK to the 2nd place (and exclusion from the next cycle, so that he can't win anything in March), and 40 million to the 3rd place.

Voting ends on the 31st of December. I'm not sure when it will start, but hopefully later today.

Okay, sorry about the delayed announcement, but the poll is open, and has been open for a while. 18 account holders have voted so far. Since this is an actual poll, and not a nomination process, each account holder can vote only once, and can vote only on nominated entries.

6 entries are nominated (a 7th was declared invalid since it fails to meet our criteria):

Eve Fitting Tool, a.k.a. EFT
A program to calculate ship fittings, i.e. modules and rigs, ammo and drones. Read more about it here.

Evemon
A skill training planner, that among other things can tell you decide what order you should train your Learning skills in, depending on what other skills you wish to learn. Also contains a database with info on in-game stats, such as ship stats.
Read about it here.

IGB Pos Planner
A planning tool, usable in the in-game browser, for player-owned stations.
Read more about it here.

EVE-Central
Online Market Aggregator and Trade finder
Read more here.

Eve Commander
Character and transaction information
Read more here.

EMMA
The Eve Market Monotoring Application
Read more here.

Winner gets 240 million ISK, 2nd place gets 120 million ISK, and 3rd place gets 40 million ISK.

I'll edit this post to make the URLs better, but they should work after a fashion already...

Those of you who haven't already voted, please go and do so. Also, take this as an opportunity to learn more about the variety of player-made EVE-tools that exist.

edit: URLs should be better now, if I've done it right.

We have decided to extend the voting period to the 10th of January. 50 account holders have voted so far, but we're hoping for more.

94 votes so far, and less than 24 hours before the poll closes. If you haven't voted yet, and you want to help determine who wins prizes of 240M, 120M and 40M ISK, hurry up.

If for some reason your favourite tool, product, info source or service isn't on the list, be ready to nominate it next time around, which will hopefully be in March.

(Note, only characters with accounts with Dynasty Banking can nominate and vote, but all it takes to become an account holder is to send 0.01 ISK to one of our tellers.)

26+60+7+3
96 votes

Winner, Evemon with 60 votes, over half the votes 2nd place, Eve Fitting Tool (EFT) with 26 votes, over one quarter of the votes.

3rd place, Eve-Central, with 7 votes. All in all a very clear indication of which tools or services that the voters preferred.

EMMA also received a few votes. The final two nominees, IGB POS Planner and EVe Comander, received no votes. Almost 100 votes were given in total.

Evemon will get the first prize of 240 million ISK, and be excluded from nomination for the next two cycles, planned to run in March 2009 and June 2009 (any nominations for Evemon will simply be ignored).

EFT will get the second prize of 120 million ISK, and be excluded from nomination for the nexxt cycle, planned to run in March 2009.

EVE-Central will get third prize of 40 million ISK, and is not excluded from nomination in the next cycle.

Just posting an update:

We have not yet paid out any of the prize ISK. The reason for this has nothing to do with the rumours circulating about us and various scams.

It is simply that none of the winners have written back to me to confirm that they understand what it is they have won.

At about this time, several days with no reply to EVEmails or emails, I expected to send follow-up mails to ask for a reply, but given the current situation, I honestly can't muster the energy; I'm totally worked up about the rumour situation.

I will do what I can to ensure that the winners get their prize ISK. If they contact me, I'll do what I can to make sure they get paid swiftly. If they don't contact me, I'll get back to them with new mails as soon as this current situation calms down. The Foundation is my baby, and I'll fight for it if I have to.
