Hi all.
I usually lurk the forums more than anything, but last night while falling asleepmy brain stumbled upon this idea, and I thought it was too interesting to NOT post here. I personally hold a neutral position on this, because I'm not quite sure how it would change the game. I want to hear your feedback :)

What if two pilots could 'combine' their skills to pilot one ship. Player B decides to lend Player A his skills, albeit at a reduced efficiency.

It would work something like this (in my mind)

Player B's pod could board Player A's ship, assuming they are in the same corp, and both players give consent. From this point on, both pods would reside in one ship, with the roleplaying idea being that the two pilots are working in close unison to formulate tactics.

Any skills that Player B has would be added to Player A's bonuses. This would need to be limited, obviously. Say, Player B bonuses are only 50% as effective as normal. Also, only two pilots can 'link' at one time.

At any point, Player A could 'kick' Player B from his ship, and at any time, Player B could leave on his own will. This would result in Player B getting ejected into space and the extra bonuses would be removed.

Now, that's about it for explanation, I think. I will list here some of the possible consequences of this feature:

1- More alts.

People who want to increase solo (or now duo) efficiency would be more likely to use more alts to attain a better ship setup. I am sure CCP doesn't mind more alts. Some of you will ask "Why have one ship with 150% skills when you can have two ships with 100% skills?"
That leads me to the next point...

2- Less losses, and more efficiency for each ship.

Now, if you had the ability to increase the bonuses on your capital ship, without the need to buy a second capital ship, would you take it?
I would. You are almost getting the efficiency of two pilots, but your potential loss is only that of one pilot. I think this would be a very attractive idea for cash-strapped combateers who are looking to save where they can.
The other potential effect of this, since less ships would be used in battle, would be decreased lag. Having 100 ships instead of 200 would probably free up some server resources. I realize that not everyone would double up, but that is just an example.

3- Market shift of ships

Since less ships would be killed for each pilot, the demand of ships and modules would decrease, making the price also decrease. I am not going to say whether this is good or bad, because I hold a rather neutral position

4- Potentially more teamwork involved in fights

I realize that a vast majority of this feature would be used by alts, but still some people would team up with a real-life friend on teamspeak or something to closely coordinate strategies.

Now that I have said my bit, I would like to hear from you!

What do you all think of this? Please post your comments, suggestions, possible difficulties of implementation... etc.

I am interested :)

Skill piggy backing; I vote no even though it sounds interesting. I think #1 pretty much sums it up for me.

While in THEORY it might sound like a good idea, in practice it would be either severely underpowered (for just about any "real" PvP situation) or severely overpowered (for not-really-seen-anymore 1-vs-1 or similar engagements).
So, long story short... just no.

It has mentioned few times in threads discussing possibility of getting rid of alts. Ie - merge all chars on one account into one supercharacter.

However - it is unlikely that it would ever happen. Too many problems.

@Slade: Is that because you don't like alt characters as a basis? I personally would frown against the usage of an alt just to increase efficiency, but if there would be a way to ensure only separate people used it, it would be cool, I think.

@Akita: Sorry, but do you have any specific examples of this over-/under-powering? I trust that you know what you are talking about, but I would like to know what kind of problems it would cause.

In my experience (mainly from good old Planetside), if you have a game where you can join players together into single units, unless that combined unit AB is much better than just A + B on their own, no-one in their right mind will do it. You're suggesting that AB should be slightly worse than A+B, making it rather unlikely, at least in my mind, that it will be of any use.

Admittedly, PS is a slightly flawed comparison since it had no economy or unit cost, but it was fairly easy to see how much worse the multi-crewed vehicles were compared to solo vehicles. Even if, on paper, those multi-crewed vehicles did more damage and took more of a beating than the totality of the solo vehicles, there was no way around the fact that you had one target against many. This meant that the swarm only had to concentrate on one thing and could fall back and repair and thus spread the damage out among all participants; the multi-crewed vehicle had to constantly switch targets and could never mitigate incoming fire. You get a "death by a thousand cuts" vs. "a swing with a big hammer" kind of situation — the hammer may hurt a lot, but is easy to avoid.

Sure, in EVE we have costs and the promise of halved costs from losses might sound nice, but is that really something you'd choose over being able to project more force, stay alive for longer, and actually win? Your suggestion is only really useful if people plan to lose, rather than try to win at any cost, and I'm not entirely sure that's how EVE is played…

Why not just expand upon the current system of leadership and fleet bonuses to include other types of bonuses?

Maybe something that helps two pilots with each others' ships, while still flying two seperate ships?

Link would fail if they aren't on same grid or something, but let's say tracking could be passively increased because two eyes are watching the target instead of one.

There are possibilities in that :)

I don't see any real reason for this kind of interaction, its already hard to balance the game without having to take 2 pilots skills into account.

Interesting idea just not one for eve, I fear it would cause a major set of nerfs as ccp try to balance ships after a change like this.

Juraka, I think you need to lay off the LSD, and stop trying to get in my ship.<p>On a serious note. It would be a good idea if there was more control needed to pilot the shop. ie - 1 Gunner and 1 Pilot But thankfully CCP made the piloting of ships rather simplistic. However great the idea is in theory, I don't think it would fly in the world of eve.

Good idea, doesnt really fill any function tho, probobly creates a lot more problems then it solves.

That is about it. Alts are already used heavily and one more aspect us noobins need to overcome. I also doubt there would be anyway you could prevent that from happening, but I am no computer wiz by any stretch of the imagination.

Once again it is reasonable to think that two pod pilots could work in unison to fly a ship but I do not think it is something that warrants implementation.

Damn i just had (nearly) the same idea yesterday. Mine was that 2 pods would board the same ship. They would then copilot the ship, that is, one would handle some functions while the other would handle other functions, pilot-gunner style. Could possibly be combined with the T3 concept.
