So I am still reading the 3rd page and continuing, but I had to ask: How exactly do you defeat drones when in a T1 Frigate? Can you? And if so what are some of your methods?

You don't. If you run into a ship with max-skill T2 light drones, you die. Check character age in local and avoid players and ship types which are likely to have them.

On the other hand, low-skill drones can simply be shot and destroyed. Kill the drones first unless you are very confident in your ability to gank the ship before its drones can finish you off.

If it is a full flight of light drones, especially T2, you're going to go down pretty quickly. What Merin says above is pretty much true - drones are the bane of frigates, avoid drone ships like the plague, especially since many of them forgo guns for cap warfare.

However, if it is just two or three drones, and especially if the character has poor drone skills, you can attempt to web the drones and shoot them down. Drones pop fairly quickly. If that was the ship's primary source of damage, you're in the clear at that point.

Sometimes, shooting a drone will cause the other pilot to pull them all in for fear of losing them. Believe it or not, people will do this even with T1 drones which are essentially free. Rolling Eyes It's worth a try, you just may get lucky. Bringing friends helps a lot too - if you have 2-3 frigates, and you primary the drones, you may be able to pop them before they have the chance to do too much damage.

Generally, Merin is dead right on this one. That said, I've watched a friend kill a fairly skilled arbitraitor in his Rifter. The thing is, if they have good drone skills you die, and if they're doing anything ELSE to you (neuting, they have missiles and they're hitting, small guns etc) while you're trying to manage their drones, you lose.

Confirming that l0ngcat is long, and that this thread longs to have an adhesive substance applied to it.

Since Merin and Skira and some other well-known pirate types are watching this thread (and it is good to inject some real discussion from time to time), how do you go about finding targets? It seems that some people are able to find targets very redily, while others (such as myself) often wander for long stretches of time without finding anything at all - and not from a lack of wanting to engage (sometimes I'm so desperate for action that I'm willing to engage anything, even if it is suicidal to do so. And no, Jericho Steele, that doesn't mean what you think it means!).

Is it just a matter of luck and a function of time spent, or are there some tricks of the trade that seem to help?

Scouts and/or fast tacklers. This gives you the best of both worlds, you get the ability to avoid scaring off a target by only entering local with a covert ops cloaked positive-security character followed by a frigate/inty/AF tackler, but you also get the firepower of the best possible ship(s) you can bring to the fight. Hold the kill ship/gang on a gate into the target system while your scout and/or tackler find and pin down the target. As long as the tackler can survive long enough for the other ship(s) to get there, it makes things much easier.

Also, it helps to be willing and able to engage rival pirates/FW gangs/etc. The lone carebear ratting cluelessly in a belt can be somewhat rare, but you can always find other PvPers to gank. For example, if you have the ships to do so, why not break up a gatecamp? You can't really ransom since the victims will jump out if you wait too long, but the loot can be very good and the targets will always be blinking red (or in 0.0) so sentry fire won't be an issue for once.

Hi Skira

Are you recruiting at the moment? I have been playing around a month in a mainly PVE/industry corp and it's starting to bore the hell out of me. Think a life of Yar is my calling.

Rolled a new character, other one doesn't look nearly pirate enough. Planning to keep him as a hauler/emergency ISK maker.

If you still recruiting new characters I would love to talk to you guys

Recruitment closed last week, but it should reopen by the end of November. Just take that new character and try and lower his sec status as much as possible in the mean time.*

*in order to see if you like it before you commit to a life of crime.

I'm not a pirate, but I did find this to be the best beginner's PvP guide in Eve. CareBears who want to explore low-sec should give it a read as well, since it will give hints on staying safe. Should be given a sticky.

Also, hang out in BloodM. Public :) We hang out in there.

I too was in your position. Shooting rocks and running missions is the yawn. They were closed when I was interested, but I was given the same advice Fumi gave you... just jump in.

Load up some rifters, and go. You will lose ALOT. But you will learn ALOT too. Don't be afraid to try something new, and just go out and have fun :) If you can't afford, do as I do... sell GTC's. One GTC sell will last you a few months worth of well fitted Rifters. And isk/hour.. I would much rather work an hour at my real job and spend that on a $35 gamecard and sell, than spend many hours on an alt shooting rocks. I play EVE to have fun :) Not to work a second job :)

I believe recruitment reopens on Nov 17, and the next wave of recruits will be accepted in the corp Dec 1. Good luck! Stay safe!

Confirming that Skira Ranos is awesome, and that this guide is the best introduction to piracy available in Eve. It should be stickied. I believe that this guide is the most read guide in all of Eve. Version 2.1 on Eve Files has been downloaded over 23,000 times!

I eagerly await the revised edition. If there is something that I can do to help - proofreading, help with formatting, etc. - please let me know.

Started in high sec. Target rat, shoot rat. Bored me to tears. Moved to null-sec, solo for a while, then joined an alliance. Bored to tears. Found Skira's guide. Now when flying about, I get my Yarrr on and have a great time. That's right, Skira Ranos has single-handedly kept me in Eve. Cool Guide should be re-stickied.

ok i'm noobs in EVE, but i think this guide is a very good work.... i have a little question: can be possible play only as bounty hunter or (especially for a newbie) is better make before Pirates or Mercs?

sry if this reveal stupid question, but when i wrote noob i mean i have only 300k Sp (very newbie)

Bump.

Also, the Bounty system is pretty broken in Eve right now. Being a bounty hunter, using the in-game bounty system, isn't really feasible. Anyone with a large enough bounty will just jump into an implant-free clone, and get an alt or a corp mate to pop them.

That said, you can always try to be something of a mercenary instead. You get paid by the corpse. Not sure how well that would work, though.

Yes, shame about the bad bounty system. It could use some love in order to make bounty hunting and anti-piracy a viable career. Something like FW; a special corporation with LP and ISK payouts based on the security status of the guys you pop. Ho hum. Bounty hunter ships...think of the possibilities :) They would be superlative pirate ships too.

Anyway, bump for the guide, it's a good read that should be stickied so that budding ne'er-do-wells can get their greasy mitts on it more easily. Man up CCP, apply the glue and say you're sorry.

Good guide, had a lot of fun and made my first ransom after a fair lot of effort.

Flew a gank PST rifter, tried to point battlecruisers for ransom vs. release, finally found an afk pod and ransomed for 100M. No more mining for the corp op hulk :)

Pointing him to this guide, because it is a one-stop-shop to an incredible wealth of information. Also, being on the front page will help him find it because, let's face it, those resource threads are rarely looked at.
