You know what's even more "Epic fail"? Pushing a game out the door that isn't anywhere close to ready. The reality is that barely any MMOs launch in a state the developers would call "finished". Most companies are forced to launch after they run out of money and have a launch-time development frenzy after sales start to come in. Funcom officially declared Age of Conan's release date to be August 2008 (albiet, after already massive delays) and were working toward that date when they were forced to launch early in May. Whether they were forced by investors or a lack of funds to continue development, I don't know. All I know is that an early launch killed that game. The first area of the game had been polished, with all of the content and vocals expected. Pretty much everyone that I've spoken to said that Tortage (the first area) was amazing and fun. It gave a false sense of quality that the rest of the game failed to live up to and that was a major contributor to the game failing horribly about a month after launch.

Darkfall may have been a long time coming and it has been delayed over and over again but honestly I don't think anyone cares when it comes out any more. I don't think many people actually expect it to be released on schedule (though it'd be cool because Jan 22nd is my birthday :D) but I DO expect it to be released in a playable condition and that's the absolute most important factor. I'd go as far as to say nothing else matters in the slighest. For a comparison, take a look at Team Fortress 2. It was considered vaporware for a long time and the game was actually developed to a prototype state and scrapped several times before they were satisfied they'd done it right. You can release a game late and succeed but if you release it ****, it's dead no matter when it comes out.

I agree with the Nymph above. Let the game be released in 2010 for all I care, as long as its really good. Its suicide to release a game before its ready.

Ohh, I'd be very interested in joining a previous(and current) EVE corp in Darkfall even though I'm not in Agony..
As EVE players we have quite a big advantage compared to someone coming from WoW, with all the coldness and harshness of space in EVE ofc :D

And it's very easy to draw parallels to Darkfall from EVE :P

This reminds me vaguely of the spherical harmonic lighting using photon maps that was presented at Siggraph 2005 (read a bit about it while reading up on billboarding in forest scenes). Though after doing some reading it appears they may have attended Siggraph 2005 and then started working on this as a replacement for that technology. Either way it looks awesome.

I have read this post and the other threads on the front page.... I'm in.

One query, I got the impression from the video on the AE site that it is Pirate or a Kingdom.... I assume we are going for the latter but I just want that cleared up Wink

One thing I am looking towards is making a Cathedral in this game... Twisted Evil

I seriously hope, I mean, I hope this game has firearms. I've always wanted to have a pirate with a boomstick in every fantasy game, but I hate taming, so that's why I didn't pick Hunter in WoW. Now there's no taming in darkfall, I want my gun!

Havnt really looked into it, except the info in this thread. and i must say, it seems very promising. I have been looking for an alternative for a while now. nothing really caught my interest though, but darkfall seems it might do the trick..

That's what makes me draw myself into things, as it matters more what you do, rather than not really caring about it.. and theres some very interesting aspects of combat. using a front tanker with shield while hiding behind in formation, freindly fire? indeed very promising.

i surely hope the gfx will be satisfying, as thats abit important to me aswell..

I watched the new 17 minute long trailer and while it doesnt look that stunning, I think it will be fun to play anyway. Once you are part of one of those groups, hacking and slashing away, I think the graphics will be the last thing on your mind.

I will probably give this game a go, specially if they have open beta I can sneak in on...

You may find it a relief to know that that is an old video made during alpha / hardware testing phase of beta so yes the graphics were terrible because many features were disabled. Smile

True, although Darkfall will be slightly more switch action than point&click EVE. We'll see how latency plays into it and play it by ear. We have both US, Euro, and a few aussies on board and we might move over to a NA server if only to use the initial launch period for learning as much as possible and then start on a newly released server knowing where to go, how things work, and what to do to accomplish our goals.Smile

Would rather hear that agony went with alfar, was really hoping an eve crew would go all out and dec war on everyone in dfo. I understand the desire to accomidate as many ppl as possable though. Hope to see and fight with/aginst agony in the near future tho.

Theres nothing that prevents us from doing that. Just like in EVE, you can wardec any clan of any race/alignment.

Some friends and I are planning to lead a human mercenary clan in the european server.

Probably it will be very limited, only a handful of good friends, so don't worry, no competence ;). EDIT: My english sucks, I mean no "competition". I leave the failtypo here tho because it's been epic.

Looking forward to find a common goal ingame for us all to work together.

yeah, it's not using that. In fact it's not usiong much of any lighting engine. It's about the gameplay :P

Or Fireball level 100 which requires said exploited resources or... yeah.

Hey, better on the day when you have a chance to buy that last HAC cheap than 7 days before you finish Logistics V, Large Energy Turret V, and Large Hybrid Turret V on your characters ugh

If that game has day/night cycles relative to our own (and so variety of timezoned servers), then I would ****ing join because I have dream about a game like this for years. Would love to see a game where people logged in during their sleep time to sneak attack, and night had for example more npc's to hurt you and no npc services. Night dominated by robbers, vampires and people trying to make some money while most players were sleeping.

I've been told Mortal Online does have that system, check it out.

Sounds a bit too short.. should be an odd number like 7 or 9, so it changes each day..
