I'm a bit confused with some aspects of the aggression/flagging system- lil help would be much appreciated!

Scenario: I'm mining in empire into a jet can, ore thief shows up, takes some of my ore from my can and I fire on them.

1) Is the thief able to warp off, dock, come back in another ship and fire on me?
2) If the thief was not in a gang when they stole the ore, but then forms a gang once I've fired on them, does that mean that the entire newly formed gang can fire on me?
3) If the thief was already in a gang when they stole the ore, is the entire gang able to fire on me once I've fired on the thief?
4) If the thief is in a player corp, is their entire corp able to fire on me once I've fired on the thief?
5) If someone remote repairs the thief, can I fire on them or can they fire on me? What about if the person is in the thief's gang?

Thanks!

Once you fire on someone, you both have the mutual right to fire on the other person until 15 minutes after the last shoot was fired. That does include the possiblity of the theif changing ships.

Gang membership has no effect on who you can shoot or who can shoot at you. His (or your) joining a fleet will have no effect on the rules of engagement.

Again, gang membership is irrelavent.

No. Your entire corp can shoot at him. But unless you take something from one of his cans (ie you steel back what he rightfully stole) then only he can shoot back, not his buddies.

You can fire on those who are remote rep'ing anyone that you are shooting.

Note that it is the fact that they are remote rep'ing someone you are shooting, not remote rep'ing a theif, that allows you to shoot them. So until you shoot at the theif, you will not be able to shoot at his support.

His support cannot shoot you until you shoot them.

Thanks for the reply & answers Jethro- all very clear.

Is there any point in being in a gang in Empire given that aggression isn't shared? For example, say I'm doing protection for a miner and both of us are in NPC corps. If we make a gang and someone steals from the miner, I can't fire on the thief to help the miner that I'm supposed to be protecting?

There aren't very many bonuses for being in a gang, but if you converted to fleet, you'd have leadership bonuses for starters.

If you and the miner are in 2 different corps, but you want to run protection for them in highsec, have them mine into your jet can, therefore any thieves will be stealing from you and hence you can fire at your leisure.

If you want to offer that kind of protection, then you will need to both join the same player corp. That way theives would be flagged to your entire corp.

Even still, it is wise to remember that the thief is picking the fight, and wouldn't be doing so if he thought that he might lose.
