If I cancel a buy order, I get all my escrow back, but I had a buy order expire unfilled, and the money wasn't returned, even though I didn't get the item.

Expired orders only get processed at the daily downtime.

Thank you for the answer. Doesn't make much sense to me, but at least its better than permanently losingmy escrow.

It's to decrease the server load. With potentially hundreds of thousands, even millions, of market orders expiring each day, probably in the tens though, it would be a real drain on resources to track them all and return the in real time.

Instead they're just returned during DT when the server has the spare resources to handle them. Many of Eve's changes are handled in this way.

Because of this, it is generally recommended that you set your order duration to 90 days, then cancel the order if needed.

The escrow from a cancelled (not expired) order is returned immeadiately.

If you change the price of your order (ie because nobody is filling it) then the duration of your order is reset.

If you ignore your order until it expires, the delayed return of your items/escrow to help manage server work load can be justified because of your appearent lack of interest in your order.

If after the downtime the items have still not been returned please file a petition.
