Don't care about free game-time, but this may prove to be a nice PR example imo.

People talk alot about games. When your friend asks about CCP and EVE, wouldn't it be cool to say things like "Its just one gaint server, so its hard to maintain it, but CCP reimburses the lost time if you lose a day to unscheduled downtimes etc". Think about this, what possibly could go wrong if they add 1 day to everyones accounts during DT? People will say "oh, 1 day free, nice" instead of "sigh, server crashed again?!".

As i said, I don't care about losing time because of downtimes, it happens, but CCP has a nice opportunity to make a positive PR stunt for a change ugh.

Yeah! What he/she said!

The EULA may possibly cover CCP's ass from a legal point of view, but from the point of view of keeping their clientelle happy and keeping us playing, giving every subscriber one free days play would not cost CCP much and would do them a lot of good.

Yeah it's only a game but this kind of thing breeds bad feelings. As a new subscriber who paid a week ago for 3 months, I'm feeling kinda peeved. One day out of 8 I've paid for so far I couldn't play!

To the 1/120th month subscription comment guy. Get a life. In the UK the game was down for the whole evening. That's all my potential playing time for a day gone. I don't want 50 cents, I want a free day added onto my subscription. That's the way other services work when they fail. That's the way eve should work.

Oh just a quick note to all the 'EULA covers CCP, shaddap' comments.

You do not understand contract law at all. Please stop making yourself look dumb. It's ENTIRELY possible for aspects of a contract to break the law, and to thus be invalid. UK law at least clearly states than unreasonable contract clauses are not valid and CANNOT be upheld. And stop implying you read the whole EULA before signing up, that also makes you look like a liar. NO-ONE reads those things! :)

Maybe even a gift ingame would be nice.
This would just mean that CCP cares about their customers and we would all be a bit more happy :)

They were not forced to do this (and I personnaly wish the model would have been... different!) but they did and it was, I hope, appreciated.

Anyhow, you see the point. Won't happen, not for a collection of minutes.

Just to be clear, your saying you seem to have more knowledge than a lot of us about contract law.....and in the same breath, you say you didn't read a contract for this game that you essentially agreed to?

Good man.

Btw, I think alot of us actually read that, I know I read it, but hey, whatever.

Also, your other point "it was all my available playing time for the day" does not validate your being reimbursed for the entire day, and if your at all familiar with law, you would know that wouldn't hold any water in court either. You were denied access for a few hours only, IF you had tried to log in after that period of difficulties your services would have been fine, and rendered as promised, meaning that if taken before a judge, you would AT MOST, be awarded a few pennies, though I doubt you'd be awarded anything at all...short of a scolding from a judge for wasting court time over said pennies.

Nice try though chief

I didn't claim to be a lawyer or an expert on contract law. However I certainly do understand contract law better than all the people saying "it's in the eula therefore they don't have to do anything", because that is simply wrong... My laziness with regards reading EULAs doesn't make one jot of difference to that.

Do you actually dispute my point about UK law overriding unreasonable clauses in contracts?

this. if you have a problem with the server crashing, then go play WoW...i hear that their servers are much, much more reliable, but you do have to pay for your expansions, so i guess ur SOL....considering EVE has over 250,000 user accounts on 1 server, i think CCP does very well @ maintaining it. suck it up

Oh and another point, to all the people saying "Oh it's only 9 cents".

Yes that's the point, it would only cost CCP 9 cents per player to reimburse us all. That's a grand total of bugger-all, plus the time to craft one SQL query to update everyone's next payment/expiry date to increment by one day.

Refunding us summary:
Cost: FA
Benefit: a LOT of goodwill.

Not refunding us summary:
Cost: FA
Benefit: a lot of goodwill LOST.

To services like this which thrive on friends recommendations, the goodwill gained would be worth a lot more than the few thousand dollars it would cost to put this right...

That is exactly the meaning of my post, i really don't understand why people read it like a whine, i really just wanted to say that giving something to the players would be just nice, for example 20 mil isk for 1 hour lost (THAT IS JUST AN EXAMPLE, I AM NOT ASKING FOR MONEY FFS!!)

I'm not crying for the time i've lost, i don't understand why people always misunderstand!

So every time anyone has network problems, preventing them from playing, CCP owes them money? As pointed out before, the network outage wasn't even for an entire day and even if it was, it wasn't for everyone. So then the next complaint will be "this XYZ subset of users did not get nine pennies worth of time gifted to them even though they had an outage, though nobody else had the problem!".

The irony of telling a company that they owe you something out of good-will.

Exactly!! And if memory serves correctly Asuka went crazy the first time she lost a fight in her precious Unit 02, and was mind r@ped by one of the Angels. Being saved by the one she hated the most didnt help her either.

Maybe the OP got beaten and mind r@ped and is now going insane and cant help herself.

Great thread. Seriously awesome.
My completely ridiculous and unapologetically sarcastic contribution: This game has how many subscribers? ONE of them has to be a lawyer (in fact, I used to know one, but he doesn't play anymore). I say we all pitch in ISK and hire him to sue for our 9 cents. Power to the people!

Saying "this is not a whine" is equivalent to saying "I'm not racist but..."

I for one would like my 13.5 pence back for time lost! (note i multiplied the 9 cents by 1.5 roughly for US dollar value).

Join me in bringing down these evil robbing scum known as CCP!

Down with CCP, Down with the system!

I also demand the time that this took me to type be refunded, i roughly calculate that as something below a penny.

I would also like back payments on all other unplanned downtimes.

If my terms are not met by noon, i shall deactivate all my accounts!!!

How about this...

CCP Agrees to refund you for every minute of every day that you have lost due to extended downtimes or crashes, if you agree to pay CCP for every minute of every day that they are early coming back from downtime.

No don't make stuff up. I never said that at all. Clearly if you have network problems then that's your problem or your ISPs, take it up with them.. CCP have stated this was a problem with their network.

Furthermore I've not told them they owe me out of good-will. I'd like to see a good will gesture because in this day and age companies live or die on word of mouth and reputation. I like this game and I'd like to see it continue. I think it likely the long term cost of not doing this outweighs the cost of giving us the day! :)

Why no refund?

Because CCP don't need to give you one.

Seriously, they are under neither a contractual nor a moral obligation to reimburse you for play time you in theory "lost". After all, it's not like you couldn't go do something else.
