Ok.. I have been searching, and searching, and searching for the answer to this question to no avail.

1) Whats the capacity of the HDD's you guys are running,

2) If they are 1+ TB, 2.5", where can I get say... 16,

and

3) How much do they cost.

Danke!

CCP and SSD Smile No date on the article though.

The product they installed (RamSAN-400) is 32-128Gb and uses DDR ram, which, while technically a SSD, is volatile - unlike the majority of consumer products - and is definitely not 2.5". Power cut = instant format. Naturally it's all mirrored to slower spinning non-volatile storage :)

If you can afford 16 Tb of DDR based enterprise quality SSD storage you must have _extremely_ deep pockets. You could probably buy a fair chunk of CCP itself. Laughing 16Tb of that kind of merchandise will be comfortably into the pointy side of us$10 million. Shocked

Well, I was doing some "soul searching" Shocked, and actually thinking about just saying two bees in a bucket.. [email protected]#$ it.

Prolly just going to go with 3.5" 7200rpm hard drives, much easier to plan out (not too mention getting a replacement if one should fail), but an 8 bay case instead of 16 Sad

Late 2005 according to copyright on article: ©Copyright 2005 Texas Memory Systems, Inc. All rights reserved.

Article mentions that EVE's peak concurrent connections count was 15,000 at the beginning, current records are nearly double that.

And lulz @ "We did consider upgrading to faster disks, but the specs for the RamSan were so insane that we had to look into it" - Jörundur Matthíasson, Database Manager for CCP Games.

SSD disks - even consumer ones - are epic win all the way. Especially now the 3rd gen are in the stores with uber speeds, 20 year MTBF and prices around where spinny disks were 5 years ago.

I replaced the system disk in my 2 year old laptop with an MTRON mobi-3000 and it's sick how much faster it responds (even tho the mobi is 2nd gen). From the end of BIOS POST to an XP logon screen in 9 seconds, it used to take at least 25. Best upgrade you can buy for price/performance, period. Stick one on order now, or at least on your Christmas list ;)
