Ive been getting freqent lock ups since running this card. can be stable for a long time or a short one. Then it just freeze totally locking teh pc up. Tried running with teh sound off, makes no difference apart from 10-15% extra fps

Im wondering if anyone else uses vista 64 and teh ati 4870x2 and has problem or no probelms. As im unsure if its vista, the card or just eve causing teh issue

Set up
Vista 64
Sapphire ati 4870x2
8gb corsair ram
AMD dual core 3gb

Thanks

Does this happen around gates and gatefires?

I have a Visiontek 4870x2, but I run XP64. when I was running Vista Ultimate64 Any little issue would result in BSOD. With XP I have no issues at all with Eve, or any other game for that matter.

I also have the sapphire 4870 x2 card. I thought it was my cpu overheating becuase the q6600 was using the stock heatsink and fan, but seeing this post, at least I'm not the only one locking up. Whether I have the sound on or not, it seems to randomly lock up for no reason. Lucky it doesn't happen very often otherwise I would go crazy. If anyone finds any permanent fixes for this please let us know.

Also running:
vista 64 bit ultimate
sapphire 4870 x2
4gb corsair ddr3 ram
intel q6600 quad core

Hmmm i remember that there was alraidy problems with onboard soundcards in eve for over more then 3 years .
3 years ago i disabled the onboard soundcard and got my self a SB Audigy 2 zs and never had sound crashes again .

And BTW i dont have any troble with my MSI 4870 OC it runs great on Win Vista 64 home basic with eve on new graphics wit all settings on High.

Here is a link to a topic about onboard soundcards Linkage

I have got a 4870x2 and have the same issues. I have proven it is cpu temp causing a lockup or a controlled shutdown. Only happens with eve. Fallout 3 runs at least 20 deg C lower.

I read elsewhere that the solution is to remove drivers and the re-install chipset drivers etc...cant find the post though.

Bump.

Getting frequent ( < 5 mins) lock ups when running 2 windowed accounts on the primary screen. Specs are:

4870X2
Vista x64 Ultimate clean install, newest drivers
Seperate EVE folders for each client, each client optimized for performance (premium graphics on, but everything else off, including sound, shadows, HDR, effects, trails, sun occlusion etc).

Mostly happens when undocking/jumping and only happens on 1 client at a time. At this point it's become unplayable to dual account unless I stick to one system and remain undocked.

I removed all drivers, reinstalled chipset drivers, installed 8.11 ati drivers AND removed my sound card (xfi sb) and moved to onboard sound. Everything seems to be fine now, although cpu is still hotter than when playing other games.

I have Vista 64 and an ATI hd 4870 x2. I get random freezes when playing fullscreen. I dont have problems in window mode. Did not try with the 8.11 catalyst as I expected no change and I dont want to test and make my machine freeze again. And I have my sound turned of, did not activate sound in eve for years.

As far as I am aware, CCP do not talk to AMD in regards to having driver bugs etc looked at. This may be to do with their strategic partnership with nVidia, however I'm not too sure - they might just not fancy the effort of getting people that actually make cards/drivers to help them develop a better product.

If you happen to look through the AMD known issues knowledge base, you'll notice that theres nothing at all related to eve in it - however, look for almost any other title and you will get results, due to them being very open about issues and having excellent support, so I would say the ball is more or less in CCP's hands.

Faults like EVE blackscreening are clearly related to gfx, hitting both nV and AMD users - and for 2-3 years, this problem hasnt been resolved, tho it is quite hard to reproduce it. We never hear of actual client development, besides new features/graphics of the game, but not specifically work on the client. Most people still think Trinity in Vista is using DX10 tho... so who knows :/

Got a similar issue, anytime i try to lock something, or i get locked by something, i get BSOD, then reboot... only thing i can think of is maybe sound card? if i turn off the sound, everything works fine. starting to get really tired of playing eve w/no sound.

If you are having problems with the 4850, 4870 or 4870x2, do a google "4870 crashing" and do some reading. Eventually you will find a fix, its not universal and may differ for users. Mine was the card bios and power saving problem, kept fluctuating between 500mhz and 750mhz core speed every second when running Eve.. lead to crashes and resets. It will run demanding games fine, as it stays at 750mhz for those. It's a stupid early design at trying to get the card to save power when it isnt needed at 100% performance.

A bios flash to disable that and no problems since. My 4870 gets 150+ fps with max settings in jita. It's a sweet card.

I have Vista 64 and a 4870X2, and apart from my card making sone odd noises when playing EVE all works fine (since the patch at least). I DID set 'present interval' to 'interval one' which helped a great deal.

Most of the time problems with cards like that comes from PSU or cooling problems. That or remove all your leftover drivers and reinstall.

This. I had similar problems and card bios flash seems to have fixed the problem. Also there is something called ATI Auto Tune in CCC. Run it as it will greatly enhance the speed of the card. Lastly set fan speed to at least 50%. You will see a dramatic decrease in card temps. Mine went from 68c to 38c.
